Four great books to start the year. One of my resolutions is to prioritise reading over TikTok scrolling and other distractions!! So doing well so far.

Finished my sixth book of the month tonight, unlikely to finish another this weekend! I’m going to rate what I’d rate if I could, not goodreads ridiculous paltry five stars
Sounds like love - Ashley Poston 7.5/10
The wedding people - Alison espach 8.5/10
Three mothers - Hannah Beckerman 4/10
Mother of all Secrets - Kathleen Willett 3.5/10
Thirty, flirty and forever alone - Christine riccio 5/10
Mate - Ali Hazelwood - 7.5/10
I think I’d have rated Mate higher if I’d reread bride beforehand as I forgot a fair bit of the context.
That brings my kindle library to 28 unread books and one self help book I am a whopping 7% through.

Haha I always felt like it was weird, like he was grooming her.i too don’t know if i want it!!
this is a book i loved on a first read and then the reread was just MESSED UP. especially when he goes back in time to give his teenage self a blow jobi was shaken to my core.
it definitely is and he definitely was. it’s so ick that she really has no chance of ever forming a relationship with another man because of him

i still think about lord crane to this day, i love him so much.
My January reads. Not sure I will read any more of Ali Hazelwoods, as much as i enjoy spicy romantasy Bride and Mate just weren’t for me.
same on ali hazelwood! i actually quite liked bride but i HATED mate - the writing was insufferable
Yeah Bride was ok and i quite liked Misery but Mate gave me terrible anxiety! Like it began with Serena being sexually assaulted which was totally glossed over then she thought she was dying for ages I mean omg is there anything less sexy you could possibly read in a spicy novel I didn’t particularly like any of the characters and yeah it was just urgh. I could’ve done without the knotting toosame on ali hazelwood! i actually quite liked bride but i HATED mate - the writing was insufferable
Hello book friends! Quick question, do you need to read the Steve Cavanagh/Eddie Flynn books in order? I have Thirteen on my shelf as when I bought it I didn’t realise it was part of a series and really want to read it, but don’t know if I need to start at the beginning? Are they like the Strike books where I’ll miss loads of context and relationships by not reading them in order? Or will it matter? thank you!
The individual story of the book will make sense as a standalone. I started the series somewhere in the middle. And the individual story was great and made me go back to the start.
You will miss out on some context and back story and character development of the recurring characters which is always nice to have, but doesn't ruin the story by not having it.

I didn’t hate it at all, but I feel like I usually enjoy her books more than I enjoyed this one. I remember thinking bride was good after I’d finished it but I’d forgotten basically everything about it. Including the knotting - what is all that about??
She does seem to pick out some really ropey titles though. I remember my friend saying ‘oh I think you’d like this book I’ve read’ and then when she told me the title was Love Theoretically, I was all ‘absolutely not, that sounds terrible’. Jokes on me coz that’s my fave. I also really enjoyed Hot for Slayer but again if I ever had to say the title out loud I would cringe myself inside out.

she did seem very fixated on it though!and yeah, the whole vibe of mate was off for me whereas i actually bought into the world of bride and genuinely cared about the characters. mate was overwritten in the extreme and some of the dialogue was absolutely cringeworthy (doesn’t the male lead say cockwomble at one point?) the “banter” made me want to pitch the book out of the window.
plus her giant man and teeny tiny little girl dynamic has gotten REALLY old fast

Officially 6 books for me in January but I finished Lovely War on New Years Day so really it was 5! I decided to spend January reading things that had been sitting on my TBR list for a long time…with mixed results!
The Road by Cormac McCarthy - one I admired rather than enjoyed. It’s a wonderfully written book but the bleak dystopian-ness was just a bit too bleak.
The Confession by Jessie Burton - a split timeline family story. Enjoyed it even if some of the modern day story was pushing the boundaries of believability a bit!
True Crime Story by Joseph Knox - meh! Could have been more than it was. Pretty predictable “twists” and feel like it dragged a bit.
Writers and Lovers by Lily King - loved it, highlight of the month. Beautifully written and characters I really invested in.
The One by John Marrs - runner up for book of the month! Really like the multiple storylines and although a couple maybe went a bit rogue toward the end!
Currently reading The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn which isn’t really grabbing me, but that could be more due to my stressful work week than the book itself.
