Have succumbed and ordered from the library after your description.😁
I'm on my 3rd of 5 books which I should finish by tomorrow - Kathy Burke's autobiography :

Have just finished Richard Osman's Impossible Fortune and will move onto the Philippa Gregory Boleyn novel next or the Sarah Vine book.🤔
I'll also shortly be picking up the latest "Judith Potts" (Robert Thorogood).
I love Kathy Burke - is it good?

My January reads. Favourite was probably The Only One Left, worst was It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas which was for a book club and was very much like a bargain bin book from The Works.

What’s the weird avocado like? Always tempted but never sure

I enjoyed Hotel Avocado, but think it makes more sense if you’ve read The Satsuma Complex first. I also got them as audiobooks which were fun and I think added to it.

Now it is February I will share my January reads 😏🙈. If you look really carefully you may spot when my new hyper focus kicked into 😂😂

I also bought 7 books last month and read nine so I’m two down. Although I did borrow 7 from the library so I guess really I’m 5 up but I have a problem so we’ll let it slide 😂

Have just seen that Kathy Burke and two more Roman books are on daily deals so save yourselves there’s no hope for me

If you're into the Romans, I'd recommend the Vindolanda & The Fort trilogies by Adrian Goldsworthy, and the Gaius Petreius Ruso mystery series by Ruth Downie (8 book starting with Medicus)

The Goldsworthy books were on Kindle Unlimited when I read them.

(I absolutely hated the Emma Southon book I read though 😂)

i hadn’t heard of them but i LOVE the covers because it looks like that little dog is solving the crimes (please tell me he is 🥹)
Yep, the dog always seems to sniff out a relevant clue!

The books centre around a Duchess (mid-thirties, widowed) who runs a high end interior design company with her gay best friend (catchphrase: Oh my giddy aunt!). This leads them to be at various stately homes and they end up solving crimes that occur there- meanwhile the gruff northern detective officially in charge of royal investigations rubs the Duchess up the wrong way, but the dog loves him and I think it is only a matter of time before the Duchess admits she likes him too 🤭

Officially 6 books for me in January but I finished Lovely War on New Years Day so really it was 5! I decided to spend January reading things that had been sitting on my TBR list for a long time…with mixed results!

The Road by Cormac McCarthy - one I admired rather than enjoyed. It’s a wonderfully written book but the bleak dystopian-ness was just a bit too bleak.

The Confession by Jessie Burton - a split timeline family story. Enjoyed it even if some of the modern day story was pushing the boundaries of believability a bit!

True Crime Story by Joseph Knox - meh! Could have been more than it was. Pretty predictable “twists” and feel like it dragged a bit.

Writers and Lovers by Lily King - loved it, highlight of the month. Beautifully written and characters I really invested in.

The One by John Marrs - runner up for book of the month! Really like the multiple storylines and although a couple maybe went a bit rogue toward the end!

Currently reading The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn which isn’t really grabbing me, but that could be more due to my stressful work week than the book itself.
I love Kate Quinn and really enjoyed all the books I read except Diamond Eye. It made me feel cold ans bleak and I dont like books making me feel that way! I DNF'd it!

Thank you - added to the list. The Ruth Downie ones are on kindle unlimited too - I may need to restart my subscription!

I loved the Emma Southon books - they seemed a good intro into it but I couldn't get on with her podcast

Glad it’s not just me! I’m about half way through now so will probably stick with it. One I wish I’d left sitting on my TBR indefinitely!

It's probably personal taste with Southon. I couldn't bear her writing style.

Yes, the Downie ones are on Unlimited now you mention it! Possibly not the last one unless they've added it recently?

My Jan wrap up..
highlight.. no surprises… The Correspondent

Honourable mention to Troubled Blood.. really thought this cold case was going to be unsolvable until it wasn’t!

Meet the Newmans.. was fine/didn’t really grab me and will probably have forgotten it in a couple of months.

Sweat by Emma Healey - has anyone else read this? I felt like it took elements of the plot too far and made it unbelievable which resulted in a lower rating than it was heading for after the first compulsive 100 pages.

Also read Wuthering Heights in prep for the film release, no idea how/why this is perceived as a love story.
