Books #14 Reading Chats

Never rated TJR before and hated Malibu (pointless) and 7 husbands (TikTok fodder) but I did enjoy one true love and forever interrupted, as background audio books at least, I was surprised it was the same author to be honest, I have Carrie Soto and maybe in another life on audio from the library so I’ll give them a go soon!

I loved the Daisy Jones audiobook (read on kindle a few years previously) and really enjoyed Malibu rising and Carrie Soto (think I’m in the minority there!) I will read the rest of her work too as I like her writing but I think if she rewrote Evelyn Hugo now she’d do a better job as I feel like her writing is improving.

someone mentioned the inheritance games, I have the next 2 in the series downloaded from the library I’ll hopefully finish this week. Bit of a weird one and not my usual genre (YA) but I didn’t hate it either! Interested to see how it ends now

this is exactly how i feel about evelyn hugo!

i have a lot of respect for TJR as a writer actually because you can tell (with every book) that she works on and improves something. she’s probably a dream for an editor to work with as she seems to take critique well. every book of hers has gotten a little better writing wise.

i think i said upthread that i find her a very “present” writer but even that has gotten better. always appreciate a writer who grows with each book!

I've been listening to a lovely recording of A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This has long been one of my favourite books, ever since I found it after the 1995 movie adaption came out. The narrater, Karen Savage, is an absolute gem. Highly rec this for audiobook fans. It's easily found on Youtube.

Evidence of the Affair by TJR is really good!

I enjoyed this one too! So much in such a short story. I’ve found I’ve really liked books with different formats, so I’m really looking forward to The Appeal. Does anyone know of any others like this?

ACOTAR has been on my list for ages and I’m going to finally give it a go - has anyone listened to it rather than read it (or have you both listened and read), and would you recommend the audiobook?

I listened to the graphic audio version of the first one, and I didn't hate it? If that makes sense. I was always skeptical if i'd like it or not - I think i'll give the second one a go and see how I get on

I liked Evelyn Hugo, it was a page turner and enjoyable. Subtle it was not though.

I like TJR for a holiday read (read Malibu Rising on hols in Florida and was enjoyable). I just don't get the high praise as though like they're great literature - they're pretty surface level books in my opinion and I never feel the need to read them again (no bad thing there is a place for those and she does them well!)

My last 3 reads. Got about 5 pages into We Begin at the End and abandoned it. The names were ridiculous and I didn't like the style of writing at all.

I have just finished Giovanni’s Room, it reminded me of De Profundis in a way — so sad and beautiful. I did hate the main character’s girlfriend though. All in all it’s a very brave book for its time.

i was looking to see what you thought of it! sad, beautiful and brave are probably the perfect words for it. i don’t think i’ve seen it compared to de profundis before but i think that’s the perfect pairing for it. there’s lot of similarities in how bosie and giovanni are described

I loved The Inheritance Games. YA is my guilty pleasure.

As with most series the second and third are never as great as the first but I still thoroughly enjoyed all three and gave the sequels 4* each which is high praise from me!

I really liked The Inheritance Games as well. I’m waiting for that and the other Good Girls Guide to Murder books to go on 99p deals so I can finish the series been so disappointed with the daily deals recently

I’m already behind with GOODREADS when last year I was always 5ish books ahead of target. I just can’t find anything that excites me, which is ridiculous I know as there’s So Much choice and some great recommendations on this thread. What kick started your mojo again if/when you slumped?

Lessons in Chemistry, just finished. Don’t get the hype at all. It was a slog to finish.

Same, I didn't care for any of the characters at all. Then the ending was so rushed!
