It was a really difficult read for me but I think I read it over the course of 2 or 3 weeks

Ohh I have both of these on my to read list. I've been meaning to read My Dark Vanessa for 2 years now so might pick it up after I finish the books I'm currently reading.
I read mixed reviews for My Killer Vacation but please let us know your thoughts when you finish it :)
So I have just finished My Killer Vacation. Have you read any of Tessa Bailey’s other books? Reminded me of It Happened Last Summer. Girl meets boy who doesn’t want relationship, end up falling in love and let the spicy scenes unfold! It was a fair three stars from me, easy escapist read.

Going in with a thriller next, I’ve made a kindle collection of books I’d like to try and read this year and I’ve read 3 so far so quite pleased!

Has anyone read Brave New World? It’s been on my Amazon wish list since I read 1984 back in 2021 and the other day I got notified to say it was down to 99p so I snapped it up. Started reading it tonight and I’m 40% of the way through and have zero idea what’s going on. I feel like it’s way too intelligent for me and I’m just being dragged along by it clinging to the hope that it’ll suddenly click for me.

Hi! New poster here, I’m so excited I found a book thread! Has anyone read it ends with us? I just finished it and I really didn’t like it - I need to know is it just me?? I know this book is so popular but I did not get it at all

Definitely not you, I don’t rate colleen hoover books at all.

You’ll get lots of great recommendations on this thread though. Let us know what kind of books you are into and i’m sure you will get some great books 🙂

I read it really quickly but it’s definitely not a good or well written book!

i loathed it 🤣 i think i already said it here but i had covid when i read it and covid was better. badly written, horribly paced, dialogue that no one would ever say in real life, trauma porn in the absolute extreme, increasingly bizarre decisions made by the deeply unlikeable central characters and absolutely no emotional payoff at the end. it was ultimately a plot and themes that were beyond the writer’s capabilities tbh.

it is extremely popular so there must be some good in it but i certainly couldn’t find it! it would be boring if we all liked the same things though i guess (sorry coho) 🤣

She really tries to glamourise unhealthy relationships and men . I was really into those angsty books as a younger girl , i think i read slammed in my 20’s and I remember really liking it but now looking back I see how problematic it was!

Her writing is really basic too , But i know people say the same about TJR but I like most of her books!

Like you said it would be boring if we all liked the same books 🙂

she really does go all in on unhealthy relationship dynamics and the “terrible man can be “saved” by the love of a good woman” trope - which i’m not into. she’s found her audience and full credit to her for that, but i can’t hand on heart say she’s a good writer. her dialogue and pacing in particular is not great.

i’ve heard the same about tjr and i think she does sometimes fall into the trap of not letting you make your own mind up about characters but overall i find her books generally more engaging.

I thought it was ok! Will probably read It Starts With Us at some point.

I don't really get the hype around 'CoHo' though. I'm actually currently reading Reminders of Him on loan from the library. Again, it's just OK.

After the whole colouring book fiasco (did you hear about that??) she's kinda solidified herself in my mind as someone keen to make money fast rather than being, you know, an actual talented writer.

I liked It Ends With Us but coho definitely loves a toxic man. I’ve said it here before but Ugly Love is my least favourite from her (and probably least favourite in general), Miles was so toxic and had literally no redeeming qualities so I’m so confused every time I see someone rate it highly or say that they love him.

The more I read the more I dislike her, she does so many things over and over that annoy me. She doesn’t trust the reader, her men are almost always toxic, her women are almost always pushovers and care about little else than men/sex. She pushes the narrative that women can and should ‘fix’ the men they’re with. I can’t imagine reading her books as a naive teenager trying to navigate relationships.

What annoyed me about it ends with us was that lily was 15 and atlas was 18, I’m currently listening to regretting you and she makes a point of saying how Jonah waited until Jenny was 16 to make a move. I feel like Colleen Hoover does so many little things like this that don’t add anything to the story but just make me personally side eye her.

sorry for the novel 😂

Thank you! I’m really into darker more psychological books, I recently loved Bunny by Mona Awad and I’m not opposed to a romance (if it’s written well lol)

HAHAHA I love this, I did find it awful too, I’m really not sure what the hype is. I think the theme is important but was handled quite badly, and for me it trivialised the trauma of what the character was experiencing. Also some of the writing made me physically cringe

the colouring book fiasco is that coho and her publishers have released an official it ends with us colouring book! something every book about domestic violence needs!

the themes were absolutely important and i think what she was TRYING to do was very worthy (and from the authors note she was obviously trying to get into the mind of understanding her father) but she just isn’t a good enough writer to pull it off. her dialogue absolutely wrecks me (honestly try and read it aloud, people don’t talk like that) and she is always rushing to the next plot point rather than letting things develop organically (like how lilly and ryle’s sister became absolute bffs after a page of meeting).

also, ryle’s sister (i forget her name!) was a weird character in general because we are told that she knows what he’s like, knows his tendencies but expresses NO opinion on how she feels about this or how it affects her apparent best friend.

i’m going to stop now before i get into my it ends with us essay but it is a terrible book that did no justice to it’s theme.

Oh my goodness no absolutely not, as if that book doesn’t trivialise abuse and trauma enough we have to colour it too??? Nah

i completely agree the theming is important, if handled correctly, however I felt this was kind of silly at times and definitely romanticised toxic relationships. Like when ryle literally stalks her and begs her (actually begs on the floor) for a one night stand and she’s like it’s so romantic of him - GIRL??? NO????

The writing is genuinely beyond cringey at times, I was quoting it to my boyfriend while reading it and he couldn’t believe some of it was real - our personal favourite was when the sister finds out the main character is pregnant and says something along the lines of I thought you were putting in weight but I thought you were just depressed after Ryle left. Huh????

The worst part tho that we haven’t even discussed was the weird Ellen obsession and writing diary entries to her. I don’t even know where to start unpacking that

I have Bunny on TBR, looking forward to reading that.

I recently read the last house on needless street its a darker/thriller/psychological theme, I think it was pretty good!

For romance few of my fave books are ‘very nearly normal’ by Hannah sunderland and ‘keep me afloat’ by Jennifer Gold

@LaBlonde never spoken to anyone who dislikes coho as much as me 🤣🤣 .

I don’t like to dismiss people’s taste who do enjoy her books because I love to see people read in any capacity so if it works for them then great but I honestly can’t get on board with her books and the hype!! I thought i might like verity as it wasnt her usual but it was just a poor mans ‘rebecca’ imo

So many better female writers in her category imo.

omg the please please have sex with me scene when he’s sorta followed her to her apartment and invited himself in and is literally on his knees asking?!! what in the world?!

the sister was just a bizarre character. like, do you feel nothing about how your brother is treating your best friend?! nothing at all?! surely you would want your friend safe and away from him?!

the ellen thing was maybe the only thing that didn’t bother me 🤣 but i hate when authors use diary entries as a plot device but the writer of the diary remembers and writes down full conversations absolutely word for word. just use flashbacks instead!!!

I agree with a lot of what’s been posted about CoHo and yet I always get stuck into her books straight away, same with TJR.

I’m definitely not in the hyping up on Tik Tok category though thankfully 😅

I think it’s just because I usually read thrillers, I like to have something basic to read to balance that out.

I actually found Things We Never Got Over worse for cheerleading dysfunctional relationships. It was an okay book to get lost in, but I did find myself rolling my eyes a little.

girl the level of release i’m feeling right now is amazing 🤣🤣

i mean, people should read what they enjoy and everyone is always going to like different things. she is just the one author where i might be like “okay, but have you maybe tried this thing instead?” it worries me that teenage girls seem to be such a huge part of her audience.

but hey, it would be dull if we all liked the same thing! i will now step down from my soapbox. “it ends with us” is just a trigger word for me 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

Oh no, I have a copy of verity and I’m scared to read it now 🤣

You should deffo give Bunny a read tho! I know a lot of people didn’t get it but if you keep an open mind when reading, it was absolutely insane but I loved it
