I have the avoid that picture, literally makes me cry when I see it, i just imagine thay being my kid.

Anyone saying this country can’t afford to help these people are coming from a place of privilege and I truly hope they never have to suffer 1/10th of what these people are going through.

its not immigrants fault for lack of resources in this country, its the people who are running it! They have enough money and resources to line their own pockets, its disgusting.

Where I used to live for uni (I don’t wish to say but it was down south) they had a high rate of people who have moved from the Middle East due to the wars and unrest, and the locals said a massive problem was that they changed the landscape of their communities irrevocably because they just wouldn’t integrate. They wouldn’t learn English, they would wear the burqa (which I have to admit I find quite intimidating) and some areas white women couldn’t visit because these men would stare at them or follow them around.
I remember accompanying my friend to the police station because she had been groped by a recent Syrian refugee and the police said she wouldn’t have a case because the authorities would be soft on him as his culture doesn’t treat women the same way. I was gobsmacked. Later a girl was raped on a night out and the man who did it was a refugee and they had police at the university giving advice and they said that it was best to avoid ‘their areas’ because it’s just too deeply ingrained a problem. The comment ‘their areas’ really stuck with me because shouldn’t it be all our areas? Plus it was difficult to avoid as you needed to walk by ‘their area’ to get to the halls of residence.
So I can understand why some people are fearful of new arrivals who are mostly male as they can cause a massive problem.
I think the local authorities and government need to help newcomers adapt to living in a Western country as it can be a massive culture shock. If they were able to integrate more then I think it would help the them vs us situations that occur.
The Police are absolutely useless!

Groping, stalking and rape is not on, regardless of the nationality of the person doing such things. You can bet the Police would get involved, if the person was beaten up by others for carrying out those activities.

The Police then wonder why very few have next to no faith in them anymore.

I feel like this too.
Me three. It’s so horrifying. I just saw on twitter a video of people trying to hold onto a plane as it was taking off and then falling to their death 😭💔 it’s beyond tragic what is happening my hearts breaking looking at the scenes I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to be out there right now. It must be beyond frightening. My heart aches for them all, especially the young children caught amongst all of this 💔💔💔 holding my babies that little bit tighter tonight we are so lucky to have been born in the U.K. 😭💔

I wonder what will happen reporting wise. I can imagine it's exciting for news stations now as it's in the early stages, but once the Taliban settle in and life goes on I can see it just being a case of 'Well, that's that'. And it will just vanish from the news stations like so many other stories do.
I don't think it will. The West will be VERY concerned as this will become the new training ground for extremists. Watch the terror threat rise over the coming months. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some attacks in the next 6 monts

Maybe I'm a heartless bastard or maybe it's because I don't watch tv or read news but I feel nothing about the Afghanistan situation. Tbh after the whole corona shite i just don't believe media and think most is propaganda.
Really though what is really is wrong is the Arrogance of western governments inflicting their supposedly better Western values for the last 20 years. The taliban will be worse than ever now after being humiliated and chased out of THEIR own country for decades.
I don't agree with taliban values, if we are to believe what is said about them but also I don't agree with taking over someone else's country. Where would it end?! How many countries?!
I heard that 85% of afghans support the taliban, who knows if that's true? But we do know that they generally don't Believe in western values.
With vital services in Britain crumbling and not being sufficient for the people already here and the fact that there are thousands of homeless people sleeping on the streets its shocking that thousands of afghans will soon be here taking that accommodation and resources from the people who most deserve our help and support.

The ex services MP (forget his name) made quite a good point just on lbc re pen and the animals. He said the problem has never been about space in aircraft but it's about the public resources needed to get to the point of boarding the plane. Mod resources have been used to get them there at the cost of not helping the interpreters and their families who are now sitting ducks. An interpreter said "why is the life of my 5 year old son worth less than a dog?"

Twitter mobs and blue tickers can be so problematic.
What I've been saying in this very thread several times ... was always about limited flight slots, apron space, fuel, ground crew, and a whole list of other things that are in short supply. Great that he and his menagerie of stray animals are out but I'm still pretty angry about the people and children that weren't lucky enough to have the twitter warriors and celebrities shouting on their behalf, so didn't get these resources spent on them, and will now be abandoned to face the bloodbath.

Fairly shameful priorities tbh. And it doesn't even scratch the surface of all the other stray animals that roam the streets over there so really what was the point?

The number of people that the gov and military have managed to get out to safety is actually an amazing achievement, but if they hadn't had to spend so much time and resource dealing with Paul Farthing it might have been a couple of planes more. So whatever he ends up doing with the menagerie of rescued animals next had better be bloody worthwhile.

The Pen guy is coming back to the U.K himself its reported in the Sun online. Its very sad, I hope the animals and the staff will be o.k. They will all have to take a few animals each or worse case scenario PTS. Its totally sickening really. Maybe when things settle down a bit they will be able to get out then?
They were originally stray dogs. I imagine they'll just let them back on the streets to rejoin the vast number of other stray animals there?

Yes it's tragic.

BUT there is an absolute humanitarian catastrophe unfolding before our eyes out there (thanks Joe) and it's likely going to get a lot lot worse within a week if yesterday's bombing is a sign of the chaos that Isis-K are keen to bring.

The guy should have an immense career in PR ahead of him though for the amount of headlines and public feeling he's been able to make all about him and some stray dogs, rather than the hundreds of thousands of people and children also wanting to escape the probable upcoming bloodbath and not going to make it either.

I know there’s been talk of Afghan Soldiers not doing enough etc and just wanted to share some stuff. My partner served two tours of Afghanistan on the front line and would train Afghan soldiers to help protect their country. Now some were absolutely fine but others would be approached by taliban and offered a hell of a lot more money to defect to the taliban. They’d give them information that meant British and American soldiers were ambushed regularly. I don’t know if money was always the reason and there weren’t threats involved to family etc. But it’s undoubtedly hard to keep a trained force together and efficient when there’s promise of safety or a better and more affluent life being offered from the other side.

Unpopular opinion possibly but I'm having a hard time caring too much about the whole
I think many feel exactly the same. People get so worked up about minor inconsequential things on twitter but shrug their shoulders at children on the other side of the world being captured to be abused.

I haven't been able to switch off the live pictures today with all the helicopters evacuating people

I do sort of feel for Boris as he's now having to sort the withdrawal time frame out too. I reckon he knows that if America don't delay it, British withdrawals (and whichever countries are left) are in a bad spot

There's a few shelters that remain there asking for Biden to extent the withdrawal date too. A few seem to have everything in order but need to actually have the planes approved for landing so animals can be rescued and even then there's staff to worry about
Yeah agree and I know it's an unpopular opinion as "Tory's are scum" and BJ is an idiot yada yada but he's got very little power and he's low in the pecking order of people to blame for this mess.

Lisa nandy constantly on TV saying how awful the government are and how they must extend it, groundbreaking 🙄 I'm sure they're not trying that. I have zero confidence labour would do any better.

I don't think opioid users would take notice of any campaigns to not use, it's not the same demographic as the "party" drugs.

Biden was beyond shameful. He should hang his head in shame. Yes popular to leave, but not pulling out like he did. Today's images will be with him forever.

I don't think people are that sympathetic really, people tend to be more disgusted really about British born people really struggling and not getting the access to houses etc that a lot of immigrants appear get straight away. I know someone who has worked with The Syrian refugees as part of their resettlement programme and they don't think its right at all.
I personally do think we need to help immigrants but that we also need to help our own people as well. Its not right that there's a severe housing shortage in this country and that U.K born people often have to wait 10 years plus for a council house or are told to piss off. This is the Governments fault, not the refugees.
What some also need to grasp is that the UK cannot house and resettle all the world's 'hard done by'. There is a limit to how many can be taken, for which successive Governments and bleeding hard leftists don't seem to understand.

Many would likely be more sympathetic to taking 20,000 (vetted) Afghans in, if it wasn't for the fact that hundreds already illegally enter the country on a weekly basis via the south coast. With estimates predicting well over 20k doing so by the end of 2021. It is estimated that over 1 million illegals now reside in the UK, plus a couple of hundred thousand refugees and Asylum Seekers on top.

This is so true, his speech was a complete charade which is being repeated today on all media channels with little scrutiny.

No one is questioning withdrawal - as his speech focused on - but the issue in hand is the execution of the withdrawal. That is the issue and he completely sidestepped that. Classic Western tactic.

As for this ‘we weren’t meant to be nation building’: that’s total crap. The US went in hoping to create a nation in its own eyes. America wanted it to be like America. But it didn’t work and was too expensive. It became a problem. He avoided confronting this too.

A plane full of mainly cowardly young males that don't have the stomach to try and protect their homeland. Leaving behind women who are at far higher risk, children and the elderly.
I mean, we don't know who these people are. If any of them worked with the US/UK forces, the Afghan military, then they were in near certain danger from the Taliban. I can't judge people in a situation so extreme, I have no idea how I would react personally to the events transpiring in Afghanistan were I a civilian over there.

Yeah, given £5.66 a day to live on until their application is processed which can take a long time, arrive with the clothes on their backs,

The housing crisis in the UK was caused mainly by Thatchers Right To Buy. The lack of housing is because she sold off homes, or allowed people to sell them off and profit from it.

The lack of resources we are seeing in the UK now is the result of 10 years of Tory austerity, nothing to do with the Labour Government. The years under Cameron et saw some of the worst poverty ever in the UK

Brexit was built on a lie, people voted for things that they were told were fact that later turned out to be innaccurate.
Lots of communities in the North did this as they had been struggling for decades with unemployment and a completely decimated community, and who did that to them.... THATCHER!! Shut the mines, didnt she? Main source of employment for thousands of people
This viewpoint that immigrants then arrived and took jobs meant for British peoples is also RIDICULOUS!
If an employer chooses to employ an immigrant over a Brit then thats the fault of the employer. Ask yourself why they might want to employ someone who works a bit harder, or for a bit cheaper. The answer is Capitalism - get something done as cheaply as possible for as much profit, every man for themselves etc. Who loved that idea?? THATCHER!

People smiling when they arrive on a boat? I would be smiling if I had got to safety having been on a dinghy on the British Channel. How ridiculous to say someone's intentions are bad because they smile.

Refuges being responsible for terrible crimes?
Are we forgetting women being murdered by British off duty police officers whilst they are walking home?
Are we forgetting Plymouth?

I sincerely hope you never find yourself in a situation where you might need some help from an immigrant
Very passionate but I think you’ve missed a very salient point. If a immigrant arrives on British soil by dinghy they can only have done so from France. A safe country and a signatory to the Geneva convention and the UN charter of human rights. It’s a simple fact of geography, the UK is an island situated in the Northwest extreme on continental Europe. The only way the UK can be the first safe country an asylum seeker arrives in is if they catch a direct flight, otherwise they will have passed through numerous EU countries to get here. The rules regarding asylum are clear, you are expected to clam in the first safe country you arrive in, hence the existence of the Dublin Regulations.

If a person wants to claim asylum they have a right, but it’s a perfectly legitimate question to ask if they are so desperate, why they ignored the EU countries they passed through? Because that looks like economic migration to me. And there are numerous routes via visas and work permits to immigrate legally. Unless of course these people don’t have the useful skills required to qualify? Which I suspect.

And Thatcher and capitalism? Really? Yes she shut the mines but frankly she had to. I was born in Easington in County Durham. What I often remember about my childhood is cycling past that stinking colliery on a regular basis. And the place DID stink, particularly during the hot summer months. The pile of coal got bigger everyday. Why? Because they couldn’t sell it. The pit had been in operation for nearly 100 years and pretty much exhausted. The reality was that it was cheaper to import coal from Australia than extract it from Durham. Thatcher devastated the town in the short run but saved it in the long run. I was the first generation to grow up in Easington who’s future didn’t involve disappearing down a large hole in the ground for decades and being nearly crippled at 50 from industrial injuries.

Today Easington has more or less returned to it’s pre-industrial revolution roots as a semi-rural community, and for the first time in my memory is actually a nice place to live.

I agree but (OT sorry)it does just prove the point, that bojo argued against, the uk is a small and relatively powerless country without being part of something like the EU. regardless, without the backing of the US nothing else really mKes a difference at this stage, what is really depressing is how, in the US at least there seems no difference in foreign policy between the two parties
Biden just ignored the EU as well. Europe is the old world. Like it or not the US, China and Asia is the future.

He tweeted yesterday, but about how to solve climate change 🤷‍♀️
The only thing that Tony seems good at 'solving' is the way of making money, and bolstering his own bank balance.

I don't take any notice of millionaire/billionaire 'socialists', as many are utter hypocrites.

I've literally cried about Kabul today which surprised me but it is so fucking sad seeing all those desperate people. Knowing the Americans, in particular, abadoned them and that Biden don't seem remorseful at all.

I knew the Americans would abandon them to their fate when they silently left their bases in the middle of the night without even telling the poor afghan soldiers that were protecting them as "they slept". That was absolutely despicable
