As someone raised Mormon who only left a handful of years ago (in the uk), the church absolutely makes people more naive and childlike in a way because we are taught that if we follow, and listen to the spirit, god protects us etc. so considering Jodi’s ecclesiastical support, some members would ABSOLUTELY think she must be good because otherwise people would receive “personal revelation” that warned them of her. (When I was little, a man was assigned to teach the 10 year old boys, and to be assigned the bishopric have to pray and “receive revelation” that someone is right for the calling. Amazing that god apparently told them he’d be great at teaching kids when a few weeks earlier he’d stuck his hands up my top and groped me)
I would hope that any of my family who are still in the church (who I genuinely just feel sorry for- I cannot describe what it’s like to be raised in this faith, even in the uk where it’s MUCH less intense than it is in Utah [uk Mormons actually mostly agree “Utah mormons” are weird]) would be able to see through someone like Jodi. Maybe it’s naïveté but I hope they would- especially because they weren’t already established child abusers!
