I'm just reading the guardian article, is it just me but I don't think the mum came across as a nice person in her videos? Obviously she was even worse behind the camera but I was always shocked at what she did show
I also don’t think the father is as blameless as is being made out. Shari is clear the abuse started well, well before Jodi and before the YouTube channel even and he was there for all of that and not being brainwashed by Jodi at that point. I’d be interested to know if he has remorse for that or just the later stuff where he can blame Jodi.

100% about the dad, imo heyou didn't stop it he should also be charged with the crime

Kevin should of protected his children, he is a victim also but all the more reason to protect them. They needed him and he wasn't there.

I'm 50/50 on Kevin

I'm slowly listening through the book and there is a couple of instances where she does recognise that he was as much under Ruby's control as they were and did try to make their lives better by listening and acting on things

Obviously Kevin was in the wrong and should have protected his children. As Shari said, he showed time and time again he was weak. But looking at it through the context of being raised in the Mormon church, he was already susceptible to being controlled and brainwashed, and when Jodi came along he was her perfect target. She’d manipulated and destroyed many other families before and was an expert at it.

I don't think there's a good excuse for Kevin not protecting his children. Also in some of there old videos he's joining in with the emotional abuse. I understand Shari wanting to forgive him and minimising his role in it all but he could have stopped it all years before and didn't.

I agree - it’s unforgivable. I can understand Shari wanting to forgive him though as she has hardly any family left! It’s sad that she seems to have become estranged from Ruby’s sisters - I wonder if it’s because of the book and how vocal she is about family vlogging. Bonnie did a video about it saying how she disagreed. It’s a shame they haven’t been able to put their niece who has gone through hell above making money off the back of their kids…
And where are the grandparents in all this?!
I still feel furious about Derek - it’s disgusting that Shari lost her temple rights (or whatever it’s called) when she was the victim. Gross.

Shari losing her temple rights (or whatever it’s called - I don’t know either!) says it all about that church and the culture doesn’t it? All about the look.

As someone raised Mormon who only left a handful of years ago (in the uk), the church absolutely makes people more naive and childlike in a way because we are taught that if we follow, and listen to the spirit, god protects us etc. so considering Jodi’s ecclesiastical support, some members would ABSOLUTELY think she must be good because otherwise people would receive “personal revelation” that warned them of her. (When I was little, a man was assigned to teach the 10 year old boys, and to be assigned the bishopric have to pray and “receive revelation” that someone is right for the calling. Amazing that god apparently told them he’d be great at teaching kids when a few weeks earlier he’d stuck his hands up my top and groped me)

I would hope that any of my family who are still in the church (who I genuinely just feel sorry for- I cannot describe what it’s like to be raised in this faith, even in the uk where it’s MUCH less intense than it is in Utah [uk Mormons actually mostly agree “Utah mormons” are weird]) would be able to see through someone like Jodi. Maybe it’s naïveté but I hope they would- especially because they weren’t already established child abusers!
That's a really interesting insight thank you for sharing ❤

on the first episode and i am enjoying the sneaky editing to make it clear kevin is to blame also even though he protests
when he says it was all going on in the shadows and he wasn’t aware of ruby’s behaviour, then it cuts to a clip of ruby grabbing one of the little’s face and telling them off, and kevin behind the camera saying ‘we’ll cut that part out’
