The Academy updated their code of conduct in 2017 due to the Me Too movement.

The code states the academy is “categorically opposed to any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination,” and stipulates that it is no place for “people who abuse their status, power or influence in a manner that violates standards of decency.”

On Thursday night, Chris Rock has his first show so it will be interesting to see how he addresses this situation. Until then, I found some quotes from the time Chris hosted the Oscars in 2016.

“Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!”

“It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. You’re right,” he said. “It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for ‘Wild Wild West!’”

From the missus herself:

Pinkett Smith addressed Rock’s 2016 monologue days later, according to ET. “Hey look, it comes with the territory, we gotta keep it moving,” she said. “We got a lot of stuff we gotta handle, a lot of stuff going on in our world right now. We gotta keep it moving.”

The Internet never forgets. ;)

I think it whole family getting cancelled, especially the annoying, weird kids, is in order. The kids will be really pissed off at getting cancelled.

So apparently he’s been inundated with offers from various talk shows to speak about what happened but Jada is insisting he only addresses it in her red table Facebook thing 🙄
Where she can totally control the narrative, got it. All of those American talk show hosts are so sycophantic, I doubt anyone would give him a proper grilling anyway

Im sure I’ve said this before, but I’m always shocked at the number of people praising Katie Holmes for ‘escaping’ from Cruise.
She’d already been in the industry a long time when she got together with him. If I knew he was a swivel eyed lunatic she certainly did. She must also have been well aware of his involvement in that despicable cult. But she not only decided to marry him she also decided to have a child with him, knowing full well the situation with Kidman and her children with Cruise. And that’s praiseworthy?Yeah, well done to her for having a father who is a lawyer and negotiating a decent divorce settlement. 🙄 Bollocks to that.
I don’t really agree with this. You don’t always see what others do. You can be told many, many times that someone isn’t true to who you perceive them to be. She seemed genuinely in to him. I’m a Cruise fan, as in I love his movies, I don’t really think his personal life is all that, I clearly remember their engagement and wedding and she really looked happy, I think he is stuck in that cult. You make a deal with the devil to reach the heights of riches and fame and then realise far to late that it’s not even close to living a normal life. It’s just sad that he chooses to keep his current lifestyle and his closet door closed rather than set himself free and be in his daughters life. Is he really gay? I don’t know? Is he happy? I highly doubt it. Seems like he is someone who throws himself in to his work because it’s all he has in life. Katie may have not realised at the beginning just what she was getting herself in to. Her father obviously did and protected her well. I think she’s to be applauded for walking away. She’s obviously a lot stronger than her ex husband! We should applaud anyone who walks away from a controlling partner.

The funniest quote I have seen is someone saying that Will Smith should be applauded for standing up for someone else's woman.

Bet the keyboard warriors are digging through steve’s history now to see how they can beat him down now 🙄

i tried to explain why the Will thing is shocking- if he could sooo calmy get up and do something like that when he knows there are literally MILLIONS of eyes on him esp on the night when he 99% knew he was going to win, what on earth is he like behind the scenes or at home etc…

This is wild. The Academy are looking like right fools with little to no handle on things.

Academy: “Please leave. Your behaviour is bullying and not what we expect of a professional actor.”
Bully: “Make me.”
Academy: “Er.”

Yet another PR fuck up for them.

I had a run in with a black American will Smith fan on twitter the other day. The reason I mention his race is because he said whites should mind their own business and it's just racist to criticise smith
I said did he realise Chris Rock was black. He said why would you ask such a silly question. I said well you don't seem to have much compassion for him so I assumed you didn't realise he was also black.🤪🤪🤪

I also ended the exchange by saying of course it's everyone's bloody business when ge assaulted someone on live television
Race shouldn't come into it. A man assaulted another man.

I don’t disagree with folk who say he acted in the heat of the moment and snapped, but that’s usually the case in assaults.
He has capacity, he will have to accept responsibility for the assault - though he appears to be getting off lightly as he was not arrested or even asked to leave the building.

I suspect we will now have to tread on eggshells all the more when it comes to joking. These Hollywood events often involve “roastings” which include tasteless jokes.
I suspect that will now be a thing of the past, in case a coked up celebrity gets upset and twats someone.

Found this article about Chris Rock making jokes about Jada since the 90s. I mean, yes a comedian can make jokes about anyone. But words can be violent too, and it's clear that she's been his target for a while. Again, I don't agree with Will's reaction, but I don't think it was a result of just one joke. I still think its a build up of a few things.

Will could have at least told him to leave her alone without hitting him.
Agree, we don’t know the background to all this. But it still all comes down to, even after extreme provocation he did not need to hit Chris. It sends out the wrong message on so many levels. Violence is never the answer.
He should know better, he has been in the industry long enough.

Sorry but she comes across like a cold hearted bitch.
This is where their relationship is so hypocritical. People are saying “ he was just sticking up for his wife” yet their marriage is is a joke!.
I think he initially thought Chris’ comments were funny, then took one look at Jada and thought “ oh shit “ she‘s not happy, ( I need to do something ). She has probably gone on at him for years for not standing up for her, but this time, his actions were totally OTT

Jada is one of those people who really piss me off on an average day, let alone when something like this happens. She was once a grubby little drug dealer yet has always walked around looking down her nose at the rest of the world. Why do people like her always do that?

He's a thug. Wonder if he'd done a few lines beforehand. He reminds me of coked-up blokes in clubs who pick a fight with someone, then just go right back to their partying like nothing happened.

Anyway, for someone who was trained to play Muhammad Ali, it was a pretty weak effort 💅

It's crazy to me that this woman seems to be emotionally abusing her husband on an international stage, and the media is happy to go along with it. The very soft denials about his sexuality and the nature of their relationship just serves to fan the flames of speculation more, and she knows this. Why continue to humiliate him a year and a half after the event and six months after even Chris Rock spoke his piece?

Also, bitch, separated isn't divorced. He's still your husband and you're still his wife. The fuck with being "surprised" that he described you as such.
you are so on the money.

he watched his mother get beaten on the regular by his dad & hates himself for not physically stopping it as an early teen
he hates that his first marriage failed and he broke his son Treys family unit open.
he wants his "marriage" to Jada to work and is so psychologically broken that a Narc like Jada runs absolute rings around him, uses his surname for clout, drags him through the mud at light speed

his public breakdown could be observed last year, he put on weight on a family holiday right after the alsina affair stuff came out and was stress eating with Jada getting the kids joining in on camera mocking him for it then he put his struggle to lose weight and get strong again on social media and about killed himself while rehashing his awful teenage years to write the book on his publishers deadline.

you could see he was near suicidal and the whole fitness endeavour was out of a degree of self loathing and living up to a fake image and this is the context *along with out new information that he has been separated SO long* that leads into the Academy Awards
he had a terrible time speaking to his parents about their abusive homelife for accuracy in the biography but even then Will had to make the last chunk of his book a bunch of bulls**t where he pretends he and Jada are a couple

So Jada, Red Table Talk cancelled, music career never gone anywhere, acting just passable ... she blows everything wide open with HER autobiography and makes Wills into pulp fodder IMHO.

Jada's doublespeak is legendary - even the interview with Hota, nodding to Hota that she is a "straight shooter"

in service of her publication its all out now, she does Jay Shettys podcast and Jay delivers her a LETTER Will prepared congratulating her on the book. they are that seperate. SMH
she also says part of the reason they stay together is how OLD he is getting and her eyeroll about the GI Jane joke was not about her ego but about the alopecia community

we can all learn from her God-Tier gaslighting and ego

publicity tour continues - another sympathetic interview
---
It feels like he’s where Ioan Gruffudd was at in 2018. Trauma bonded and can’t see a way out and will just mop up offer her at his own expense. She’s slowly bringing him down and he knows it so he’s trying to placate her so she stops. She won’t stop WS or at least until you give her what she wants.
yeah he may not be a strong enough person on his own to see it and get her *Gone* and may need someone new and full of life and decency to have that contrast showing him what Jada actually is.
signs point to no hope otherwise, he already wasted a decade

The thing is if someone gave you a list of attendees and asked you who was likely to smack the host Will Smith would’ve been the bottom of the list. He has completely changed everyone’s perception of him, even those who think he did the right thing don’t see him the same way anymore.

I don’t think that’s exactly the full story

Jim Carrey has lots of things to say about Scientology, they target him regularly. Cathriona was a Scientologist (through friends in Tipperary she met someone who was a member and ended up joining too) I think a lot of those stories around STD's and her death being Carrey's fault were placed in the press by the church. (Dons tin foil hat and prepares to be called a nutter)

People making this a race thing and talking about "black privilege" need to get a fucking grip, as do the people somehow finding a way to blame Jada for her husband's actions 🤦🏻‍♀️ I know it's tattle but I genuinely expected better than outright racism and misogyny
The only privilege this is about is “Hollywood fame and money” privilege where “stars” think they can get away with anything. And the reaction to Smith’s actions shows they probably can. As for blaming his wife. She doesn’t seem like a very nice person but he needs to take responsibility for his own actions as do those commenting on them. What WS did was WS’s fault not his wife’s or anybody elses.

Again, you clearly didn't get what I was saying. Keeping up a public pretence all the time must be exhausting and psychologically damaging in the long run. It's no wonder that so many celebs have breakdowns.
And again, they CHOOSE to live this life. Give it up if’s so mentally damaging. Go volunteer the rest of your life & be yourself. Most people have no choice but to work in a job that’s physically & mentally draining in order to keep a roof over their heads. They have breakdowns too but don’t have the wealth & privilege to get the help they need.
I’ve little sympathy for celebs who court fame then complain about criticism & privacy.
No job’s worth sacrificing your mental health for.

I don’t think they should take back his Oscar, he won it fairly and it’s not really going to make much of a difference now either way. They should ban him from attending any Oscars for the next five years.
The academy should also accept partial responsibly for the shitshow that occurred and apologise to everyone for not intervening sooner and removing him from the venue.
They should also issue a massive apology to Chris Rock for leaving him stranded on stage alone and make a firm promise that it will never happen again.

I think doing that will disgrace and shame Will enough and that’s what is needed. It was pure ego that drove him to do what he did and so he needs to be kicked where it hurts and face the humiliation of being barred from the elitist ceremony he spent so many years kissing ass and schmoozing to try and make it to the top.
Disagree, banning for five years is nothing. Maybe banning for life might be a start. In future any film he is in should be automatically disqualified for nomination to the OSCARS, that would basically make him untouchable.

Yes the more I think about it the more i agree that's the way to go, unfortunately it's never going to happen.

Sounds like he had a fun night at the Oscars!

What disgraceful behaviour, Will Smith is stupid, I hope he gets sued by Chris Rock.Defending his woman, what a joke, she everybody’s woman apparently, does he go around slapping all the guys she sleeps with, even her son’s friends? And Will Smith, sleeping with women all over LA, such a fake couple. And Jada did not shave her head because of a medical condition, she shaved it because like millions of women her hair started thinning during menopause. She's got to expect to made fun of, she looks ridiculous!!
