The amount of people trying to justify Will Smith's behaviour is mind-boggling.

Jada has alopecia, not cancer. The joke was not out of line, it was barely a joke at all.
Chris is a comedian- this is what they do!
Jada says she's a strong woman and nothing can tear her down, apart from one lame joke apparently.
Will was laughing at the joke and only reacted when he noticed Jada wanted a different response.
Will physically assaulted Chris. This was a quip, easily laughed off, not to be escalated. His response was not okay. Violence and aggression are not okay.
Will doubled down and screamed/ verbally assaulted Chris even when he knew his response was out of line- he saw everyone's horrified faces and still chose to double down.
Will then said he was doing god's work and was a vessel of love. That's an interesting way to show love. He didn't even have the decency to apologize to Chris when he was on stage.

He was immature and short tempered. It was a terrible choice. He should be ashamed.

What a bizarre turn of events. Despite his whole "Mr Nice Guy" persona, Will Smith has always made me feel uneasy, but I could never put my finger on exactly why. They have a strange, cultish family dynamic all round.

That slap was not about his “love” for Jada. Abusers of all kinds have used that rhetoric to excuse behaviour for years. That was about his emasculation as a man.

He didn’t “lose” it. He slowly and purposely walked onto that stage and chose violence. That was a response, not a reaction. Followed by a gaslighting speech. That man has serious issues.

Just my armchair perspective but I think he feels deeply emasculated by Jada’s affair and their talking about it publicly which was really cringe.

As soon as he went up on the stage I thought to myself, "Oh no, we have a Kanye situation." Nope, it was a manchild committing full blown assault on live TV. Just when the Oscars couldn't suck any harder this year, Will Smith has to suck the air out of the room. A little indie film won best picture, but it is all about Will Smith hitting Chris Rock. Congratulations Will, even when you shuffle off your mortal coil, this incident will exist ad infinitum asshole.

If he had got up, walked to the stage, grabbed the mic and said “Your joke was inappropriate, deeply hurtful to my wife, and I respectfully request an apology” I think most people would applaud him.

It’s the calculated aggression in plain site that’s just awful, and totally unacceptable.

He should be stripped of that Oscar and charged with assault.

Will Smith’s a prize idiot, I hope he’s “cancelled” now. It was his big night & he f****d it up big time.
I’ve suffered from alopecia for over 10 years - I wear wigs & they’ve fallen off in public many times. You just gotta laugh it off. If I was compared to Demi Moore in GI Jane I’d be more than happy!! If my hubby punched someone who was joking about my condition I’d be mortified.
Of course a lot of people are very sensitive about alopecia & people can be cruel but Chris’ joke was pretty tame!
Will thinks he’s a type of god & can’t be touched - it’s a pity he’s not being prosecuted!

Genuinely shocked at how many are defending his behaviour.

It was barely a joke, also in GI Jane demi Moore looked gorgeous and was bad ass.

The Smiths have been the butt of jokes for years when it comes to their marriage and sex life, this was a relatively small thing to erupt over. It suggests an inability to control your emotions and anger, or a desperate need for attention...or maybe both.

The mask has well and truly slipped, and in a way I'm not surprised. I've never bought his nice guy image.

God's work = violence then according to Will Smith. That alone is a very problematic statement to make. This is a massive PR fail that will overshadow his win.

Looks like another nail in the coffin of comedy, and these award shows (which seem to lose relevance every year). Producers will be wary of comedy hosts from now on.

It’s very sad. I agree that there’s something very off about the Smith family, however, there’s no doubt that Will has grafted his tits off to get where he is and prove he’s a quality actor, as well as a big box office star. This should have been his moment; the pinnacle of his career to take all the love (sycophancy) from his peers and spend the rest of his working life picking from plum roles only. As it stands, he’s a laughing stock and will forever be regarded as having a toxic temper a la Russell Crowe. It’s really sad.

As for Chris Rock, he’s a comedian in the Jimmy Carr vein for goodness sake. If you’re not the butt of his jokes you’re laughing hard at him. His schtick was tame compared to the stuff Ricky Gervais pounded out at the GGs. He’ll come out of this very well.

I feel awful for Chris Rock. That's one of the biggest honours a comedian can get, to host the Oscars. Will Smith is a pig and tbh alopecia or not, his wife is a creepy puppet master.
Interesting how she somehow got the whole evening to be about her 🤔

It was pretty unnerving. He seemed to laugh, then all of a sudden was up on stage to punch someone right in the face? That level of aggression, especially in a room full of your peers, is not normal. How he had the brass neck to sit there the rest of the night is beyond me. His speech gave me culty vibes too.

No wonder his poor mother sent him to stay with his uncle at Bel-Air 😉

Rebel Wilson also took a pop at them at the BAFTAS. I guess she had a lucky escape?

Generally speaking assaulting comedians for making jokes seems like a really bad idea.

Will smith is disgusting. Should have been escorted from the event. How’s The ego on him too, chris rock probably has no idea about Jadas medical issues. The fact that he went into win too, what a joke.

I'm not 'defending' him. What he did was extremely unprofessional. I don't think you can really minimise the medical condition though. Just because someone is not dying doesn't mean they are ok. My niece had alopecia for several years and I know it's something she struggled with a lot mentally, despite it not actually being visible. We discovered a patch missing at the bottom of her hair when she was 10.
I can see that you’re personally affected by this topic and that sounds very difficult. But CR didn’t make a joke about, or mention, alopecia, and for all we know he didn’t even know about it. You are assuming he did, but he might not have. He was making a stupid joke about the fact that she looked like GI Jane who it could argued was actually an incredibly fit, strong, independent - and all those things JPS approves of - woman.

And all that aside it’s an extremely dodgy road to go down, deciding that some subjects are out of bounds for comedy. Who gets to decide - anyone who is personally offended by something? That would leave very little room for comedy. Will Smith has set an incredibly bad example here.

I didn't assume he knew. I said on another thread he maybe didn't. But that doesn't mean Jada isn't cut up about her hair loss. Some people can laugh it off, my niece certainly couldn't. Plus jada is in the public eye. She definitely didn't look pleased. Did it warrant Will's reaction though? No.
I think Jada has some audacity to be offended considering some of her behaviour and comments to others. She’s always struck me as a typical Narcissist- she can give it but not take it.

I saw a red table talk where she and Willow got into it and she got all weepy and tried to invalidate willows experience. They have also been in the industry for years, they aren’t green.

Whatever happened last night, what Will Smith did was not about Chris Rock

If they did a show with Jada introducing Will to one of the guys she cheated on him with it would probably end up with Will crying and hugging it out with him.

He deserved that 🤦‍♀️
Making a joke about her appearance when it's due to a medical condition was in very poor taste, but I'd say Rock probably wasn't aware of that. Bit of an awks move when he went on to win. 😳 He could have just spoken about it after though. Or hit him after. Pulling a kanye was a bad idea.

Strange dynamics in that 'open relationship' though anyway that he's obviously sensitive about.

I have to say I found the eery silence in the room after he smacked him one quite triggering. You know that moment after the aggressor in your household does something awful, and everyone else just sits there looking at the floor, too shocked, or too scared, to do or say anything. Yeah, that. 😩
