I wonder what would happen if we allowed *ordinary people* who carry out acts of violence in the name of God/love to use this excuse.

And the Academy is an actual joke; only is it now reacting to the situation with tougher words. What a disgrace the entire situation is.

Still, everyone got to go home after a fun night of toadying with a goodie bag containing thousands of pounds worth of free gifts, the likes of which me and you could only ever dream of having.

So many fucked up 'stars', so many of them get excused again and again, especially the men, Brad Pitt, jonny Depp, Leonardo etc, countless huge music and Rockstars, lots of heroes from my youth including will smith.

So just to clarify: On Twitter, words are ‘literal violence’, but literal violence is fine? God I hate them.
I think the reason that celebrities will be taking Wills side is obvious, they know comedians (and interviewers, and even the little civilian plebs) might be more cautious in future of daring to criticise them if they think they can be attacked and the celeb still comes off as the good guy. Hollywood hasn’t been so arse-licked in the last few years and they absolutely hate it, this is a gift to them.

I don't think it was staged, Chris Rock seems at a loss for what to say after the incident. If it was staged there would have been a funny quip.

I don't think the joke was particularly funny and would have been totally disregarded and forgotten about but for Will Smith's reaction.

Race is irrelevant. Violence is always wrong. Comedians often make jokes about things people find offensive, look at Frankie Boyle.

I didn't and I'm sure plenty of other people didn't know Jada had alopecia having seen a video today it looks like she has a small patch in the middle of her head which could probably be covered if she grew out her hair and also by a wig if she was conscious about it. I've red hair and people are always making jokes about ginger people. Some of them I do find upsetting but I don't go punching people who make the jokes.

I was also thinking the same. If a white actor would have hit a black comedian... or vice versa, there would certainly be the race element mentioned.

I don’t think you understand alopecia. (Or the deeply emotional impact it can have, and the loss of identity sufferers experience).

no she isn’t dyeing. She isn’t dying either.

alopecia is a condition where the body attacks its own hair follicles in an immunity response.

“implants” wouldn’t work because the body would attack hair follicles all the same, and unless the autoimmune response has stopped attacked follicles, it’s not likely to be successful.

I don’t like Jada but ultimately, Wills reaction was on him. Slut shaming jada or making fun of gender fluidity doesn’t add much to the conversation imo.

This is really sad. I adored Jim as a child and have had no time for him in recent times due to these rumours but if it’s all bs and just an attack on him by her opportunistic family, then I’m ashamed that I was so quick to judge and believe allegations without looking further into it.

I had no idea she had alopecia, I can't understand why a lot of people assume that Chris knew she had it. I was shocked by Will's behaviour, for some reason I always thought he was mild mannered, not aggressive at all. I do think as others have said that Jada had a go at him for laughing and then Will completely over reacted. O also agree with what a poster said about Kanye, he'd have been removed and attached by the media.

It is a sad state of affairs when a comedian can't make a joke.

I don’t know where this idea of “Will Smith, a universally beloved lovely man” is coming from. He is a Scientologist, for one thing, so there goes his “nice guy” reputation. And you only have to look at how his and Jada’s children have turned out to see that both of them are fundamentally messed up. That’s not to mention all the nasty rumours about him circulating on gossip sites.

I don’t think that’s exactly the full story

Anyone who thinks that this debacle was staged to boost ratings, or that it's done a favour for the Oscars needs their head testing. It will not revitalise it in anyway.

The golden age of Hollywood was last century and the real glamour and prestige has long faded.

The "we've actually been separated for 7 years" announcement just takes the biscuit.
These people are walking personality disorders.
