Your Dad dies at the grand old age of 100. What’s the first thing you do? You phone the people who have the potential to line your pockets even more.... Gross.

Omg I was a bit wary when I saw this thread and then I went through reading it and you’re absolutely my people!

everyone on my social media..Facebook Instagram etc etc and down to news articles being posted are really lapping this all up. And me? I post one opinion saying I don’t understand why they put this old man and his family on a plane in the middle of a pandemic and suddenly I’m the bad guy?

You know it frustrates me when people get hero worshipped like this, like it is a cult status because you can’t say anything remotely critical and I do think this deserves criticism. I feel for the people of the Caribbean and Barbados dealing with families like this just coming for a jolly good holiday whilst desperately trying to keep their infection rates down - which the Caribbean have been doing so well at! Where was his families thoughts for the livelihood for Bajan folk? It’s a small island so the virus can spread to the population quickly.

im more critical of the family than Tom as I think they’re loving all this attention and a freebie holiday- and I’m sorry he died, I really am. But he’s not the only person on earth who’d love to have a holiday. And BA should be absolutely ashamed for encouraging his travel in the middle of a pandemic when he was so vulnerable.

I think it’s mad to raise money for the NHS - which isn’t a charity and should be better funded by the government - then disregard the pandemic by going on holiday and put more pressure on nurses and doctors working in the hospital.

It’s very shallow. Hopefully Netflix will do a proper documentary at some point.

There’s so many words that are mentioned about Captain Tom - selfless, inspiring, the nations grandfather, amazing - he was an old guy who walked up and down his garden. How is that selfless or inspiring??

if it was any other time then i could see taking an elderly relative for what could be their final holiday but during a pandemic was just a death sentence !
from her posts on twitter it was hardly a relaxing break for him..he was paraded here there and everywhere like show pony !
Him catching covid was totally avoidable and what really pee'd me off was they refused to see they'd done anything wrong and the family were allowed to see him in hospital and say goodbye when others like my mums friend weren't allowed to accompany their husband in the ambulance when taken ill and he died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital 💔
My friend was a nurse at the hospital and said it was a circus...family swanning in and out when they wanted etc

Also on one ward across from CT, was my dying Grandfather. Also a war veteran. Were we allowed to visit? Were we bollox. I complained, got some generic BS back about how they'd had soooo much thanks for "looking after captain tom" but could "understand my upset". I had to just delete it before I said some things I regret.

If Barbados was on his bucket list, why didn’t he just pay to go years ago? It’s not like him or his family didn’t have the cash.

The fact that he broadcast that his first marriage ended because it was sexless (so obviously HE wasn’t to blame) told me all I needed to know about this “gentleman”.

Let’s look at it this way, they flew from one of the worst infected countries in the World to Barbados, an Island with only two hospitals, just for fun. It wasn’t essential travel, a “bucket list” isn’t a right. They just wanted a holiday, during a global pandemic.
It’s entitled behaviour and putting others at risk is sickening.

I had no idea Sir Cliff and Russ Abbott were in the same bubble as Sir Tom. That would explain why they aren't social distancing from him when they know the risks.
Imagine travelling all that way and bloody Cliff Richard is there to greet you at the other end lmao

I have just seen a post on another forum saying people are awful to question the family as they may have needed Sir Tom for childcare!

At least he won't get his own musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber 🤣
Do not give the family ideas! Following on from Captain Tom’s World of Adventures we’ll have Captain Tom the Musical featuring such classics as Don’t Cry For Me Marston Moretaine and Another Zimmer Frame Another Garden!

PS my Granny is 99 this year, wondering what world tragedies I could exploit in the next 12 months, unfortunately from what I can gather her war efforts were limited to entertaining the troops and not in a Vera Lynn way!

I’m working in COVID icu at the moment and I’ve held so many hands of patients who can’t have their family with them. If that family have been allowed in...

You are my people!

I had written about my thoughts on FB but decided to remove it as it was clear that I would get loads of aggro for it by those who have been brainwashed by the Cult of Captain Tom.

I'm also avoiding TV / news etc today. I cannot cope with all the quite frankly ridiculous ideas people are spouting! State funeral, day of mourning, burial in Westminster Abbey, flags at half mast, personalised messages from the Queen and Prime Minister, face on a £10 note, statues. WTAF?!?! The world has gone mental. He was an old man who's daughter pushed him into the spotlight so she could milk it for what it was worth. He walked around the garden of their multi million pound mansion he didn't find a cure for cancer or save the world.

Who on earth decides to call Piers Morgan and Michael Ball as a first port of call after losing their father?!?! If that doesn't show what her priorities are then I don't know what does.

The biggest pandemic in this country is hypocrisy, its more rife than the bloody virus right now.

I’m baffled that people are shocked that he died. He was 100 how long did people expect him to live? Another 20 years?

What a disgusting thread.
Why is it disgusting? Everyone on this thread has said how wonderful the old man was in raising the money for the NHS. However, let’s not forget there are hundreds of people out there who have done just as much if not more for their communities but who have not been recognised. It is the media machine (his daughter and son in law) at the back of this gentleman who has raised his profile to this fizzy height. What about the working class people who have worked tirelessly to help others not only through this pandemic but for years. They are not recognised because they don’t fit the media’s idea of a “fairy tale”. They don’t live in a massive country cottage or are CEO’s. They are ordinary folk. You cannot give everyone a state funeral so you shouldn’t give it at all. Maybe the young nurse who died after contracting covid whilst pregnant should have got a state funeral too?

Statement from Hannah
“ My father was very fond of trampolines when he was alive. I’m sure I speak for him when I say that we should #be kind to the trampoline. If it had known that it was my father’s train then I’m positive that the trampoline would never have thrown itself on to the track in such a disrespectful manner.”
