I think this is likely to go on for some time to come. I personally think it will be like another Cold War for some time. Months, years even.

Did anyone hear our own ministers saying this is going to hit our pockets for some time? I don’t begrudge it, I really don’t. I want us to do as much as we can to help these people.
No, I don't either. Let's help the poor souls out - they need our support & will eventually gain NATO membership, then they'll always be safe. They want to align with Eastern Eu and have nothing to do with going back to an old style USSR ; they've gained democracy and it looks like they will go down fighting for it to the end.

I hope that Xi Jinping will aid in brokering a peace deal. He plays a strategic game and I can’t imagine that he’d agree with Putin’s approach to Ukraine, particularly when it stands to destabilise the world. Perhaps he will use this as an opportunity to prove to Western nations that China (more specifically, Xi) aren’t the threat that we perceive them to be. China and Russia share a lot in common. If there is anyone that can get through to Putin, it might be his ally. IMO - he stands a fair better chance than any of the Western leaders.

When are the EU deciding on letting Ukraine join? And if that happens what does it mean for the war?

It'll only be because China want to be seen to be helping. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them, either. They are no friends of the West.

That won't happen for a long time. It's very complex and the nation will have to show to the EU commission that they are at peace for a good while beforehand

Well for one thing, the citizens will of course have freedom of movement to other EU countries. So that could make it easier for them to settle in a safer country.

They aren’t friends of the West but they don’t want this war either. It isn’t in their own interests.

They'll be pretty annoyed with him. Consumption and demand for their goods will have massively reduced across the world.

As we all know China is looking forward to the next 50+ years to carefully plan. Whatever Putin is doing, it's not that!

BBC News as this is a Lyse Doucet Stan account.

Just catching up with the coverage after being out. It’s like entering a parallel universe being out socialising when you think of all the innocent people suffering.

I don’t think that exposing Moldovia on the map as a possible next target for invasion was accidental. I think Putin and Lukashenko are playing evil mind games.
In all honesty I had no idea before this just how in bed with Russia Belarus is. Surprised that and the role of Lukashenko isn’t being discussed more. I understand they have more or less the same sanctions against them and rightly so, they’ve facilitated Putin’s every whim.

Neither did I really, I thought that Putin had bullied his way into Belarus, but turns out that Lukashenko is quite the dictator himself!

Moldova is an interesting one. Moldova is an independent country with its own government but there is also the wider region of Moldavia (sometimes also called Moldova just to add confusion) which also includes part of Romania. The area is culturally a huge mix, some Russian speakers, some Romanian. The country has been very divided on how much it wants to lead EUwards or Russiawards but, if Russia took over Moldovan, I can't see Romania considering that anything other than an act of war.

Yes the case of the athlete Krystina Tsimanousakaya was very big this summer in the Olympics and highlights his brutality. Belarus has been a nasty, oppressively regime for a long time. Big fans of hunting down their political opponents and killing them.
