What's the difference between an 'illegal' (your word) and a 'refugee'. 5 points if you get it without me helping you. 10 points if you don't google the answer.

'Illegals' (your word) and failed asylum seekers cannot claim Universal Credit.

But they CAN still claim benefits which is the point I'm making.

This is semantics I feel. This isn’t ‘benefits’ but a bare minimum subsistence amount so that asylum seekers don’t starve to death while their claim goes through. It’s not job seekers allowance, uc or anything like that. People do actually starve to death in this country sometimes when the benefits system fails them btw

Anyone who has grown up visibly foreign knows that this country often does not feel like a welcoming place despite certain members of the right thinking that refugees get a free ride. Attitudes like strangebuttrue's are always lurking just below the surface.

Even in my case, when my mum is full on white blonde British, and I was born and raised here, and I sound very British, because I have slightly brown skin and a foreign name, I am constantly being asked where I am "really" from, having my name absolutely butchered and people say "ooooh that's a mouthful" and so on. Don't think those who don't have this happen to them realise how consistently wearing it is, like I have to prove my right to exist here, even though I am a British citizen and have never been anything else. Witnessing as a child people tutting at my Dad and I on the bus for speaking another language, people calling him a "paki" (when he's not even from that part of the world!), loud passive aggressive comments from white relatives about immigrants. It doesn't half grind you down.

People on the right don't have an issue with people who seek refuge from actual war as long the proper channels (no pun intended) are adhered to. If you think its ok to break the law to get into this country, then I would say you may not have much care for the law when you're in it.

I'm sorry you don't feel very welcome in some circumstances but I would say its likely some British people wouldn't feel very welcome in places around London, Bradford, Luton to name a few so it works both ways.

What are the proper channels for claiming asylum in the UK? From my understanding you cannot do it from overseas.

It's like that one guy on Question Time who said that Labour were punishing parents for having ambitions for their kids. The majority of parents have ambitions for their kids but can't necessarily afford to send them to private schools or get them extra tuition and whatever else

was born and raised in a council house and went to a state school. the country was a different place when i was at school than it is now. they weren't chronically under-funded; teachers weren't as pressured; behaviour was better, there was more respect and teachers/teaching assistants weren't having to teach children who didn't speak english.
if i had children, i would make every sacrifice to send them to a private school so that they'd have the chances they wouldn't get in a state school.
my nieces and nephews were all educated privately for the reasons i've mentioned here. my siblings made the same sacrifices i would have, in order for their children to have something better.

i have no issue with this whatsoever.

There is no way to legally enter the country as an asylum seeker. That's why you claim asylum.

I'm not bringing colour into it. You're saying you don't feel welcome in some cases and I'm saying that I also wouldn't feel ‘welcome’ in some parts of the country so it works both ways.

This should be an interesting week, I believe that candidate selection/nomination closes at 4pm on Friday. So we'll know by then who Labour is putting forward, how many more Conservatives are walking away, and whether Reform managed to find someone for every seat or not.

It doesn't matter what department it comes from, it's all coming from one source which is the British Taxpayer. You can add as much smoke and mirrors around it as you like but it's still those that go out and work hard who have to pay for those who break the law.

It isn't smoke and mirrors - its fact. I've said that that the taxpayer foots the bill. I also said that only 0.5% of the tax I paid last year went towards supporting asylum seekers compared to the 19.6% that went towards supporting everyone claiming welfare.

I think that everyone needs to be given full, transparent and impartial information during election time so that they can make an informed decision when it comes to casting their vote. I don't care who you vote for.

This! A person arriving via small boat is only "illegal" up to the point they claim asylum. If they had a legal safe entry route to begin with they wouldn't be "illegal" in the first place.
