I’m cynical about lots of this stuff and also open minded if that makes sense? I love reading about everyone else’s experiences but I always start with the theory that’s there’s usually an explanation for it that’s grounded in reality (although I’d love it to be true). I do think that places and houses have ‘vibes’ and although I’ve never seen a ghost as such, you can definitely pick up on a feeling. In our last house, the wiring was ducked up, so you had to turn the kitchen light off on the far wall, then walk through the kitchen in the dark and I always hated it and felt like someone was watching me. I’m not sure of the connection, but we found out that a previous owner used to do backstreet abortions there.

We’ve also stayed in a couple of holiday cottages that have had the vibe. One of them, I just felt really depressed the whole week and when I looked it up online after the holiday, apparently someone had recently committed suicide there (the article didn’t last long online). Second one was in an old Georgian extension to an Elizabethan manor house in Cornwall. Modern renovation, but the bathroom had an awful feeling to it, and my husband wouldn’t go to the loo in the night and had to leave the landing light on. We’d go out during the day and come back to a windowsill full of dead blue bottles in the kids bedroom, even though the windows weren’t open and we never saw a live one. My daughter also kept ending up on the floor during the night, even though she’s never fallen out of bed before or since and we never heard her fall. Apparently, years before, someone had been walled up alive in the house when we looked it up but I took that bit with a pinch of salt although we decided not to book for a second year.

just want to throw this out there to see if anyone else has experienced what I experience. Basically, I am what you would call a highly-sensitive person. I'm also intrigued by old things, vintage stuff and the like. My problem is, when I go into a charity shop, antique shop, or auction room to have a browse, I get all kinds of weird vibes off the items, shivers down my spine, to the extent that I have to get out of there quickly, often feeling nauseous too. Its a horrible. Has anyone else experienced similar, I wonder?
---
I experience, what I think of as ‘energy’ from inanimate’ objects. Like you, I love a browse around antiques and vintages fairs and enjoy nothing better than a good charity shop. It is hard to explain the feelings, I don’t even know how to put it into words to explain it, as it’s not a black and white experience, it’s not like saying something is happy, sad, good or bad. I wish I understood it. But I wholeheartedly believe that objects absorb the energy from their surroundings.
I’ll try and give an example. My sister once brought me the most unusual looking, quirky small jug for my birthday, which she’d purchased from an online auction website, it matched the decor in my living room perfectly. Over the next few days, every time I went into my living room, it felt uneasy, the atmosphere was awkward and disjointed. It took a few more days before I realised that it was the jug. Sounding like the mad old bat I am, I took the jug down, said to it I knew it wasn’t happy and was going to move it somewhere else and hoped it would like it there. I popped it onto my kitchen shelf, along side bobble head Jesus and my many overseas mementos and it’s been fine every since, in fact I haven’t felt any thing from it since, so I am assuming it likes where it is now and the living room was back to normal as soon as the jug was moved!
I understand to some, this will make me sound batsh*t cr*zy, maybe I am, I don’t normally talk to my ornaments, only my 4ft pink gnome in the hallway called Darren, because if I don’t say good morning or goodnight to him he looks sad 😂
I’m sorry you experience it so violently that must be scary xx

Can they lead to deamonic places?
I don’t honestly know. But I think they can be malevolent, or sometimes only mischievous. It’s easy to come off worst in an encounter, I would say.

Like someone upthread, I’m always in two minds about these things, but I’m open- minded and weird things do happen.

I honestly believe I saw an entity that I would describe as fae rather than ghost, once. But it’s a story that makes me sound utterly mad so I tend to keep it to myself in real life.

Beware the fae, indeed! An ADHD friend sent me this

For what it’s worth I was walking my dog in a stretch of ancient woodland about 15 years ago and a large ball of brown leaves came across my path a handful of yards in front of me, right to left. It was about 2 feet high, with a small man inside, wearing the exact same colour as the leaves, and running. It/he crossed my path to the left and then just vanished into thin air. Leaves, little bloke, just everything. Nowhere to be seen, not vanished behind anything. Anyone I tell laughs like I’m crazy. I dont blame them, to be fair😂

So can anyone help me out here? I went to visit my nana’s grave a few days ago, anniversary of her death, I don’t go very often, I was sat by her grave, feeling down telling her about my life then I asked her to send me a sign, a few seconds later a squirrel was sat about a foot away from me, looking at me, wasn’t scared of me & was there for a few minutes, then it ran off, is this a sign?
I know I'm replying to an older comment here, but I hope you still see my reply. My daughter was stillborn almost 19 years ago, I have another daughter who is 17. I've gone through some really tough things both through losing her, but things in relation to her death since. My other daughter hasn't kept well her whole life and is going through a tough time at the moment. Reason I'm explaining this is whenever I'm at my lowest ebb, and really, really struggling mentally ill ask my daughter to send me a robin. And 9 times out of 10 she does. Ive only had a garden for a few years so now she sends them here, but sometimes it would be if I was walking home after dropping my daughter at school, and it's always right away, not hours or days later, it's almost immediately. I only ask if I'm desperate for a sign I'm making the right choices, or I need to know she's looking out for her sister. I see them in all seasons. I can't remember why, or when I began doing it but it was many years ago, so I'd say yes, you definitely got a sign and it's truly lovely when that happens x

I've been reading this thread on and off all day since discovering it, and I'm about halfway through. The conversations about Alister Crowley are really interesting, for some reason I've always felt very drawn in to reading about him, and the house he had Id have loved to visit. Anyway, my experience of what you may, or may not, class as supernatural are -

When I was a toddler I'd always sleep walk, my mum told me she would find me in all sorts of places, including the dogs bed. As I got older this changed to night terrors and what I assumed was nightmares. One of my clearest ones was a dream/night terror I'd have repeatedly, over a number if years. I can still see now, what I saw then, 35+ years later. I'd be lying in bed, on the bottom bunk, and I'd see an old lady in a rocking chai, through the ceiling, in the room upstairs, just rocking back and forth. I'd also see workmen in the roof of our house, odd thing is, we lived in a block of flats and we were the ground floor, so had no upstairs or roof directly above us. The girl who lived in the top flat above us began having bad dreams and slept walk around the same time, but she was a few years older. One night she was sleep walking (they were the third floor, the top) and climbed out the window, and fortunately another neighbour was outside, and saw her and caught her.

Looking back it was strange it was happening to both of us at the same time. We moved when I was around 12 as the flats were being pulled down so I can't even go back and investigate to see if anything paranormal may have caused it.

All my life I've been what you could call "highly sensitive". I have never seen anything as such, but I'd have dreams that would come true. We were on holiday in Spain, I was 18, when I dreamt my uncle had died. I told my mum but she brushed me off, but was calling home later that day anyway, and was told my uncle had died the day before.

Once when I was in South Africa aged 20 staying with my ex boyfriends parents to visit them my night terrors ramped right up, I woke up screaming one night (I can always remember what I'd been dreaming about, and knew I was asleep after the dream but couldn't move or wake up), my ex's mum rushed in to see if I was ok, I was mortified. I'd dreamt I'd been watching a plane crash in front of me, in a ruralish place in Asia, China I'd assumed. I told my ex and he thought nothing of it. Next day we put the news on and there was a report that a plane had crashed in a village in China. His face was chalk white.

I've had lots of other experiences but I won't ramble on any more, however I suspect in the house we bought five years ago, and obviously live in, that there is a spirit. It's always downstairs at the back of the kitchen. Every time I go down at night, even if I'm not thinking about it, I get that feeling someone is watching me. So I put a shield of white around me in my mind and ask it to leave me in peace. I've told it I'm happy for it to stay but it has to respect us, and I will do the same in return. Things get moved constantly, go missing and appear either exactly where I was looking or in somewhere I'd never gave out it. My daughter used to say when we moved here that there was a man in the loft, and when we finally got into the loft (we didn't see it when we bought it) it was obvious someone had been using it to spend time in as there was all sorts of stuff in it, empty beer bottles, playing cards. It's not a nice loft, it has beams across most of it so not much space. I've no idea why anyone would want to go up there. But they apparently did.

Anyway sorry for blabbering. It has been great reading your experiences, I'm away to read the rest.

Has anyone else ever had a strange experience in the Scott Monument in Edinburgh?
I have no fear off heights or enclosed spaces, but I completely freaked out in there, ending up having something akin to a panic attack and rushing back down the stairs, screaming at an American tourist who was refusing to get out of my way.
Yip. I couldn't go up it either, hated it. My husband and daughter were fine but I was not having it at all lol

Thank you to everyone for sharing their experiences, it’s a fascinating thread.

It’s a running family joke/knowledge that my dad has the “sight”; he often dreams vivid dreams at key times, usually just before/after a family death. It’s not scary, my family see it as more reassuring. He’s a burly, old fashioned man which makes it even more incongruous. Anyway, just a couple of things that have happened more recently; the evening my grandmother (my dad’s mum) died, my son, who was 2 at the time, was adamant an old lady was knocking at the front door. I had to show him in the end no one was there, and put him to bed; a short while later my dad called to say my grandmother had passed.

My father in law died suddenly at home, the first time we stayed with my mother in law since his death we were woken at 3am by all the lights upstairs switching on; we told the kids the lights were dodgy but there was no explanation.

Just to throw in a comment, while reading the thread (not done so in a while, so may have even said this before). I was just saying the following to my partner the other day. We are both skeptics but accept that things happen that are very difficult to explain. I do feel that humans have some innate psychic energy; some people more than others are tuned into it. Thinking about animals, it's well documented that they can sense earthquakes, tsunamis, adverse events, etc. long before humans are aware of them, as has been shown in their behaviour patterns. We're animals, too, but we've evolved in the capacity to use language and logical thinking. As we've evolved along these lines, say for communication purposes, perhaps many of us have lost touch with some of our more primitive sensory abilities that enable us to perceive things outside of out immediate sphere of knowledge. We simply don't 'need' them in order to survive or communicate. Less 'evolved' human communities seem to retain more of these insights/ 'traditional' knowledge about life cycles, nature, etc. and we tend to look upon them as ignorant or unsophisticated, not trained in the ways of 'science'. However, maybe it could be argued that more 'civilized' peoples have 'lost' something of this. In many cases, maybe when we have unusual/ inexplicable experiences, maybe part of that innate psychic energy is kicking in or coming to the fore. Or maybe I'm just crackers! I've not had much in the way of 53 years that amounts to a very clear 'paranormal' experience but don't readily dismiss the experiences of others and the impact that experience has upon them.

I’ve been off work today and instead of doing anything productive I’ve just been reading all the creepy threads on here !!!

I’ve put a story from my mum on the thread about creepy explainable thing but ive got a story to share here too, again not my own sadly (my life is far too boring ha).

I used to work with a woman who was the straightest woman you’ll ever meet in the sense of always calling a spade a spade, never caught up in flights of fancy etc etc.. so when she told me this it really tit me up to say the least !!

ex colleague was absolutely stunning, i knew her when she was a bit older but she was beautiful even then , and she was from somewhere in essex originally (for context am in the north) and there had been a bit of chat around the office that she was a “gangsters moll” type back in the day.

I went for leaving drinks for someone one day and of course me being an old soak it ended up just being me and her at the end,, I didn’t know her terribly well so we ended up having a chat about our lives and our backgrounds.

she told me that prior to moving up north she had been involved with a bit of a dodgy fella (I think they might haveeven been engaged??) who was a bouncer on the doors of one of the big london super clubs, I won’t say which as if you Google him a lot comes up!! If you were around that scene back then you might even remember him, I’m told he was a bit of a name.

as all these types did, he controlled both the doors and the supply of drugs in and out, she really wasn’t happy as I think what started out as a little “pocket money”for him had ended up getting out of control and they’d had bricks put through their window and everything. He had started using too and had started getting violent, I think he’d put his hands on her a few times and she was starting to get seriously unhappy.

Lo and behold one day she gets a knock on the door from the police, he’d been killed coming off his motorbike down a fairly rural lane. I think it was investigated and foul play was officially ruled out but ex colleague was never convinced, she knew he had a lot of people out for him. I think she was actually quite relieved and felt like she was finally free of it all.

Here comes the creepy bit. about six months after he’d died she’s on a train late one afternoon coming back from somewhrre , sat in the window seat absentmindedly looking out and it stops at a little single platform station not far from home. She looks out the window and the platform is pretty much empty apart from a few people, and then she notices sat on a bench - it’s him. she was certain that it was him because he had on a jacket that he’d always worn, a beige Harrington type jacket. He’s sat on the bench with his hands clasped and head down and as the train pulls to a stop it’s like he looks up and suddenly notices her. She said he stared right through her and the look he gave her was one of just pure evil, real anger / malice. The train pulls away and his eyes just follow her until she’s far off into the distance. I think it was a few more stops from home and she just sprints back to the house, packs some stuff and goes and stays at a mates house, not long after she moved up here and has been there ever since!!

It’s not my story obviously so she could’ve been having me on but the way she told it has always stayed with me. As I say I googled him and there was a photo knocking round and it just sent a chill down my spine looking at it, he was a real hard faced fella. One of the few times in my life I’ve been genuinely spooked !!

sorry it was a bit of a rambling one and I’m certain I’ve not told it as good as she did !!
Omg I really need to know who this person is! That story sent chills through me!

My friends son passed very suddenly almost 2 months ago! She told me today that she heard bells ringing in her bathroom in the early hours of this morning! She has no bells in her house.

We do have other senses that are not generally used in our modern loves and you can train yourself to be more aware.

Our 'gut' instinct is a hangover from ancient times. Most people can tell if someone has bad energy when they meet them and it confuses them because we're conditioned in today's society to see that as some sort of prejudice.
If you get a bad vibe when you meet someone don't just ignore it, be wary.

We moved into our house 7 years ago. We bought it from an old lady who was going into a home. When we moved in I just had a feeling of a man’s presence but it didn’t make any sense. The original house deeds only had her name, no husband. Weird things happened like I came home from work and swore I saw a man look out of the lounge blinds. I assumed my husband had come home early but no one was in the house when I got in. Another time about 11.30pm my daughter woke for a feed, I was sat in bed feeding her and notice a faint light around the door, I grumbled to myself that my husband had left a light on downstairs but then the light disappeared. Like someone had turned a light out.
I always try and rationalise things like it’s my mind playing tricks on me, but my husband saw the light too and asked what it was.
Then in lockdown I was sat working late one night about 9pm and I looked up and the cord for the blind started gently moving. The window was closed, the radiators weren’t on, I even considered if a spider or fly could have made it move, anything to explain it. Anyway weird things like this kept happening then suddenly I felt like this man had gone, weird things stopped. A few months later I was chatting to someone in the village and they mentioned that the old lady had passed away recently. Turned out she did have a husband but he’d died not long after they’d bought the house. I always thought it was him and he was just waiting for her to pass.
The other weird thing that happened was I came home once and we have a full length glass front door and in the reflection as I opened the door I saw a small child run past in a nappy. My initial thought was it was my mind playing tricks as I wasn’t sure if my husband and daughter were home, but the child wasn’t my daughter, I had this feeling whatever I saw was someone else. Fast forward 11months and I had my second child, a girl and when she was about 2 she’d run round in a nappy and was the exact image of whatever I had seen that day. I’m not one for premonitions but it was so strange.
I always try and find the rational explanation first but sometimes some things just can’t be explained.
