Anyone got any tried and tested remedies for incredibly sore thighs post run? I don’t think I warmed up or down properly but I’m struggling to sit down to use the loo right now so I need something to get me through the next day of pain please 😂

I've just found this thread - Hi! My fiance got me into running in the first lockdown, before i had only ever played football. I've really enjoyed it to be fair and every week we have done a 5/10k flat out on the Saturday in place of parkrun/races. I've managed to get my time down to 19:17 now and desperately want to get sub-19!

I have found that our weekly interval sessions really help, usually about 18-24 minutes of 'effort'. Today i think we are doing (3 mins, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3) * 2. She also told me that only 20-25% of your runs each week should be really pushing it, the others should be gentle/slower runs with maybe a really slow long run on a Sunday if you can to recover!

Evening all! Late to the party here, but on week 4 of Couch to 5K and looking for my fellow running Tattlers.

I used to run 3-4 times a week and really enjoyed it but I sort of let it slip and as any of you from the healthy eating thread will know I have become a potato!

Looking forward to the evenings getting lighter do I don't have to stick to the same four streets that have lights and venture out on some different routes (quite a rural area where I live).

Hi

I started week 6 today. Never really ran distances before. Usually just a 300m warm up pre hockey match and as little as I could get away with preseason. Couch to 5k helped me immensely. I‘m at almost 4K in a session now and feel I can go for more.
I like doing the same route at the moment. It makes comparisons easier. It’s also quiet and hardly any traffic (although I had to move for two cars today). Might have to change as it looks like it will be an access road to a housing estate being built so there will be lots of mud.
I am starting to enjoy it more now. I used to get a buzz when I finished knowing I had achieved something I never though I could. I now look at the next run and think I can do it. The next run is the last of the interval runs so there will be no walking to recover after that. Once that would have filled me with dread but not now.
Good luck with the rest of it. hopefully you will soon go from a potato to a french fry!!

Oh wow, well done!

I feel the same as you and I'm getting real satisfaction with each run I complete. I looked back at week one which now looks really easy but I remember absolutely gasping for breath half way through that one! I wouldn't have thought 4 weeks ago that I would now be running for 5 minutes solid.

I think you're right about comparisons on the same route - I know that it's 1 2/3rds of the way around the four streets to get to 5 min!

And YES - potato to french fry - I absolutely love this ❤

I'll let you know if I get to week 7 and the full on runs 🤪

I’ve just started Couch to 5k and did week 1 run 2 today. I’m horribly unfit but thought this would be a good idea. I’m finding it hard going, the last two runs are tough. For those who’ve done it before - is it worth me repeating week 1 until I can comfortably run all 8 runs before I progress to week 2?

I started in June but had to stop because of niggling injuries. Got up to the end of week 6 last time. There was a nice surprise which I won’t spoil for you. When I got back to it I started on week 4 but although I could do it i didn’t feel right so around Xmas I deleted it all and started again. I’m noticeably fitter than last time although no quicker.

When you get further on they say that running through the last run when you are tired is what builds your stamina. I have thought about rerunning weeks again but managed to get through. Week two you run a little longer but rest a little more. It’s designed to build you up.
My advice would be try it. If you can’t do it all you can go back to week one. You might surprise yourself. There are loads of people that say they didn’t think they could do some of the runs, myself included. If you do it the sense of achievement will be huge. If you can’t there’s no shame. At least you are trying to get fit.

Did my last interval run today. With less walking and more running my time improved a little. if I have no aches will be completing week 6 tomorrow. This is where I ended last time due to injury and then lockdown ended and i went back to swimming.
25 minutes running. When I have done it I will feel so proud.

@Clickbait How are You getting on?
@fluffyglitterbug I know you won’t be a french fry yet. How’s it going? Maybe a chunky chip?

Definitely not a french fry yet, but I'm heading towards chunky chip status!! Went for my second week 4 run at lunch (yay for working from home!) but my legs are little bit painful and I think a lot of that is down to the trainers I'm wearing. So I am spending the afternoon perusing proper outdoor running trainers!

Any recommendations?

Well done for reaching 25 minutes!! I'm about 10 days away and can't imagine doing that...but time will tell!

Go at your own pace :) I almost died the on my week 1, run 1 - but by the end of the week I found it manageable. I *think* (and someone more knowledgeable may be able to help here) you don't want to get tooo comfortable at each stage. If you step up to the next week and find it too much then definitely drop back and do the previous week's runs. I started out horrifically unfit but finding my fitness levels improving quite a bit each week :)

Hi @Shep decided I need to improve my fitness alongside C25k so did my first YouTube Zumba class today from a suggestion on another thread. It was great, really enjoyed it and the time flew by. I’m out for run 3 tomorrow morning so hopefully it will all become a bit easier. Thanks for checking in.

25 minutes is my next run. I have done 20 so hopefully I can make the next step.

Trainer wise I use ASICS. They are sturdy and comfortable but to be honest as long as they are a running trainer they should be fine whatever brand. Just a shame you can’t try them on in lockdown.

I was having calf issues. My calves are huge (there is a picture of one earlier in the thread). I got a book called the science of running which gave some tips but my best acquisition has been a fair of running tights. No issues since I have been wearing them

No worries. My mates on Strava keep me going so I know a little encouragement can go a long way

That’s really helpful thank you. I’m trying to do a very slow jog rather than the proper run I was doing before but need to find something in the middle as I think I’m a bit bunched up and tight (if that makes sense). I’ll definitely try and move on to week 2.

I am also doing the couch to 5k and changing my trainers after week 1 was a godsend. I have very tight calves anyway so I am making sure I stretch before and after which has also helped. Week 4 run 2 tomorrow! 😮

I think some places are doing a thing where you send videos of you running and they help decide the best shoe - not as good as the in store experience but very good for to get proper shoes for your needs.

Good for you. Did you ever think you could get that far? I certainly didn’t. I did try running on my own about a year before I downloaded it but I was no good. Having someone in your ear has made all the difference to me.
Week 4 daunted me. Only 90 seconds walking before 5 minutes running. The last couple of minutes were tough but the joy when I did it! Loads of luck, not that you need it as you know you can do it

If I did that they would probably send a pair of slippers

no I have never ran before! I always thought I’m too slow, I get sore shins, my calves hurt, I get a stitch etc. I always think the first run of each new week is a bit daunting but your body and mind can do powerful things with a little bit of a push! It’s a great feeling once you’ve completed a run isn’t it?! Best of luck to you too. I enjoy checking in here and following everyone’s updates😊
