I’m a Republican in the royal sense but also a massive fan of history and it hasn’t passed me by that this is most likely that last Platinum Jubilee of a British monarch in my lifetime. So the family are going to have a food and drinks which will be great because I haven’t spent a lot of time with some family members for awhile. We have some bunting and balloons left over in red, white and blue (no idea why, we have a box where left over party decorations go to live) and the children really want to put them up so I think why not? We don’t have a local street party near us though I don’t know if I’d go to one because it’s not really my scene.
I don’t see the problem with people wanting to do something for the occasion, the vast majority of people I know are using it as a time to meet friends and family which I think is very important, especially since Covid prevented a lot of people meeting their loved ones.

The only bit that makes me sick is the potential that Andrew might appear.

I just don’t agree with it, I find it hypocritical. I wouldn’t take a day off for a religious festival I’m not a member of the community of. I am religious and do celebrate my own religious festivals, but wouldn’t dare do it for Eid for example as I’m not Muslim.
Do you take the one at the beginning of May which has nothing to do with Christianity but is a mainly pagan celebration with dances around a maypole to encourage fertility in people and the earth out of interest?

I'm in Scotland and work with older people. We're having a celebration on Friday but it's been hard going trying to get decorations, paper plates, etc. There is nothing in the shops here.

You wouldn't know it was happening if it wasn’t for the displays in the supermarkets advertising party food.

Think edinburgh has organised big screens, but Glasgow has nothing. And personally, I think we like it that way.

Like a lot of folk, the Queen is reasonably respected. But when she goes, I think there will be a discussion about how to go forward.
Yes, it all seems a bit twee and English to me, which doesn't go down too well.

I'm not doing anything special, but I'm all for a party and celebrating. People need a party after the last couple of years.

Yes, the cost of living crisis is more important. But this government wouldn't spend the money on people struggling instead. They laugh at the poor and struggling. They are suffering of their own making in their opinion.

Let's just have the party and try not to worry about our problems for a weekend. We have to enjoy ourselves when we can.

My house is upside down currently (moving soon!) but my garden still looks nice (even put cute bunting up) the plan is to watch some of the live tv, then me and my son are going to bake cakes and have a bbq in the garden, just the two of us, with games of snap, colouring books, our cakes and a teapot of tea ☺

The fact that when the Queen dies Charles’ face will be all over money, stamps, passports, police and military uniforms instead of her’s is quite sad. As well as post boxes changing and singing god save the king instead of god save the queen. I’m not a fan of the royals but her dying is going to change everything. It’ll also cost the UK economy billions. I don’t know when the next time we will actually see a genuine (biological) queen on the throne will be, I guess if George has a daughter. Which a lot of people might not be alive to see

I saw the queen’s mother lived for 101 years though, so hopefully she still has a few more years left. Her Christmas speeches no longer being televised every year will be so strange

I wish Anne was next in line tbh. Whenever I see Charles and Cam all I can think of is poor Diana saying there was 3 in their marriage so it was quite crowded 😥

I got tickets for the jubilee concert…I’m so excited. I quite like the royals but I can also see why some people don’t.

I don't understand this. I (and many others) don't get a choice about whether to take bank holidays off/not. My workplace opens reduced hours and we are all rota'd on to work one per year.

I would much prefer to work them as normal days and keep the holiday allowance, but that's not up to me!

Unpopular opinion, if you don’t want to celebrate the Queens jubilee, fine. But don’t take the bank holiday. Go into work and don’t take the time and a half pay. People really quick to slate the day yet will take all the benefits. (Obviously this goes to people who have the bank holiday off for it)
Interesting opinion, though not one I agree with.

Using the Royal Family as a way to get a day off seems perfectly legitimate to me, given that we pay for them. It might even be more legitimate than atheists not working on Xmas Day.

I would go further and have a specific King/Queen's Day bank holiday each year, as they do in the Netherlands.

Not really. Will watch some of it on TV, but with these big royal occasions, I get bored after a while and end up doing something else.

I'm thanking my lucky stars for Netflix and youtube this week. The wall-to-wall coverage on TV is nauseating.

I like the Queen as she’s carried on ‘ruling’ for such a long time, not putting a foot wrong (unlike a lot of the royals).

But I’m not planning on attending any jubilee events. I live in a touristy town that gets really busy on any bank holiday weekend, but it’ll likely be even worse this weekend, so I’d rather just avoid it. 😄

There’s a street party in my road, but I’m planning to take myself out of the way for the day. I’m really uncomfortable socialising at things like that, but I feel awkward and embarrassed about not going as I probably look like a right misery guts.
On the jubilee itself; I get it’s a big deal in terms of what a huge milestone it is, but I just don’t feel particularly engaged with it.
I find the history of the monarchy fascinating, but I think that it’s an outdated concept, and can’t fathom why people are still expected to bow to another human being.
Not that I wish the Queen any ill, and I hope that those who are celebrating have a great day.

When I worked for the civil service we used to get an extra holiday for the Queen's birthday. I gladly took the extra day off and I'm not a Royalist, but I wasn't going to turn down an extra days holiday.
It's an extra bank holiday this year and people can do what they want. I'd rather have family time than go to a street party with my neighbours. I won't be dictated to on how to spend the bank holiday

I wonder if Britain will ever see another seventy-year monarchical reign.
She's only the 3rd monarch to have reigned for 70+ years ever in the world. It is quite a rare thing to happen, and only likely if someone is crowned while extremely young

Currently, the Queen had had the 3rd longest reign , it is possible she could hold the record for the second longest as she hasn't got long to go exceed the current one.

There are various street parties going on around my town but I won't be going, will watch a bit of the celebrations on TV and might have a little afternoon tea at home I'm not a fan of the Royal family but do have a soft spot for the queen 70 years on the throne should have some sort of celebration it's not likely to happen again for a very long time. People are going to moan if it's not celebrated and people will moan for it being celebrated can't please everyone. Its nice that Britain has something to celebrate for a change.
