The queen’s jubilee. What are your thoughts & plans?

I like the Queen as she’s carried on ‘ruling’ for such a long time, not putting a foot wrong (unlike a lot of the royals).

But I’m not planning on attending any jubilee events. I live in a touristy town that gets really busy on any bank holiday weekend, but it’ll likely be even worse this weekend, so I’d rather just avoid it. 😄

I wonder if Britain will ever see another seventy-year monarchical reign.
She's only the 3rd monarch to have reigned for 70+ years ever in the world. It is quite a rare thing to happen, and only likely if someone is crowned while extremely young

Currently, the Queen had had the 3rd longest reign , it is possible she could hold the record for the second longest as she hasn't got long to go exceed the current one.

I like the floral displays in London for the Jubilee. It's mostly the Chelsea floral show, but added in with Jubilee bits. Looks great.

Last jubilee in 2012 one of my friends organised a massive party we all went to.

I'm probably not doing anything this weekend, eldest child is away, youngest isn't interested. If I was still with my partner we'd probably have done a barbeque but since I'm now on my own, will just be sitting at home. Maybe I'll make a mini afternoon tea for myself :) I'd like to do something more but no one I know is celebrating it locally.

I would really like some bunting but have been in about 20 shops and none seem to have any (I remember it being everywhere in 2012 but I guess that was also due to the run up to the Olympics etc

Not celebrating with a street party, being forced to socialise with people I don't know and wouldn't normally speak to is my idea of hell 🤣🤣

But we are having a family gathering on one of the days and I'll definitely watch the trooping of the colour and the parade as we do stuff like that so well. Concert I'll probably have on in the background. It's also history that unlikely won't be seen again for possibly hundreds of years. And certainly not in our lifetimes.

Honestly thank god for these times because otherwise this country would have nothing to bring it together or celebrate. No independence days etc. It would be pretty dull.

I've been surprised how many flags I've seem up around my way (together with Ukrainian flag), and also how many people seem to have flag poles in their gardens these days too.

I’m working my min wage job on the jubilee weekend and bank holiday, I couldn’t even force myself to care about it if I wanted to. 😭

Tesco stock it, unless you mean its all been bought........

I'm not really a Royalist, I haven't been for a long time. If it were up to me, I would happily go and do my own thing during the long break coming up. But as my partner has insisted on putting up bunting ect, I might just join in. We'll see how it goes.

I cannot imagine the amount of people in London and Windsor next weekend. It will be absolutely crammed. Good job covid isn't what it was otherwise it would be the most super spreader event out there.
Im sure if covid was what it was, none of this would be going on anyway? Come back covid ( joke) . . All is forgiven, Im not fussed for any of this BH malarkey. . Itll just turn into a 4 day bender for most people!

I'm just pondering the queen's range of coats for all occasions. I teach a child who doesn't have a coat, and another whose uniform is always filthy.

I remember the Olympic Torch coming round in early June 2012 more than I do the Jubilee.

I'm in Scotland and work with older people. We're having a celebration on Friday but it's been hard going trying to get decorations, paper plates, etc. There is nothing in the shops here.

You wouldn't know it was happening if it wasn’t for the displays in the supermarkets advertising party food.

Think edinburgh has organised big screens, but Glasgow has nothing. And personally, I think we like it that way.

Like a lot of folk, the Queen is reasonably respected. But when she goes, I think there will be a discussion about how to go forward.

I’m a Republican in the royal sense but also a massive fan of history and it hasn’t passed me by that this is most likely that last Platinum Jubilee of a British monarch in my lifetime. So the family are going to have a food and drinks which will be great because I haven’t spent a lot of time with some family members for awhile. We have some bunting and balloons left over in red, white and blue (no idea why, we have a box where left over party decorations go to live) and the children really want to put them up so I think why not? We don’t have a local street party near us though I don’t know if I’d go to one because it’s not really my scene.
I don’t see the problem with people wanting to do something for the occasion, the vast majority of people I know are using it as a time to meet friends and family which I think is very important, especially since Covid prevented a lot of people meeting their loved ones.

The only bit that makes me sick is the potential that Andrew might appear.

There’s a street party in my road, but I’m planning to take myself out of the way for the day. I’m really uncomfortable socialising at things like that, but I feel awkward and embarrassed about not going as I probably look like a right misery guts.
On the jubilee itself; I get it’s a big deal in terms of what a huge milestone it is, but I just don’t feel particularly engaged with it.
I find the history of the monarchy fascinating, but I think that it’s an outdated concept, and can’t fathom why people are still expected to bow to another human being.
Not that I wish the Queen any ill, and I hope that those who are celebrating have a great day.

Lets hope not, the Queen being the last monarch wouldn't be a bad thing. Dated and done. All this crap about devoting her life, lets not pretend she hasn't been paid handsomely for it, or didn't have a choice. I'm sure she's a nice lady (or is she, do we really know?), but I could not give less of a flying duck. Sure I understand from her perspective why she is celebrating, but the amount of money is grotesque. Read the room.

I'm a bit peeved that people won't be able to get a GP appointment until at least Monday. With people struggling to get appointments as it is, this week is a 3 day week and GP practices will be shut.

We can't get a gp appointment as it is nothing to do with the jubilee if you do manage to get one it's still only a phone appointment.

Yes, it all seems a bit twee and English to me, which doesn't go down too well.
