The Duvet Thread

I bought a brand called Highams from Ebay for my children. They are grey and come in a variety of sizes and weights and were very reasonably priced. About £25 if I remember correctly. I put duvet covers on them to protect them and just febreeze and air the actual blanket when I wash the cover. We've had them a couple of years now and they seem to be going strong still
I have this one! Got it at the start of the pandemic. I love mine. My cat did revenge piss on it, when I was keeping him inside, a well deserved punishment for the terrible crime of preventing a fight wound getting further infected. So worth being aware that if you live with vindictive creatures you might want risk mitigations in place, as they cannot be washed nor I think dry cleaned (the gravity blanket, I mean, though this also applies to my cat).

Absolutely loving this thread! 😂
I only have a 5kg washing machine so I don't think a coverless duvet would fit? I'd really like to get single ones for my kids as they sweat/dribble/occasionally wet their normal ones. Does anyone know otherwise?

I am so glad this thread exists, merely so I can tell you about the silk duvets they flog on Ideal World late on ITV.

This guy that owns the company is the male version of Gloria Hunniford but 10 times as boring. OMG. The actual product sounds decent, but I'd never buy one out of spite. I don't want my money in this dull, dull man's pockets. 😅

I mean, the info I could tell you on Mulberry Silk duvets, lol.

I don’t think a double or bigger would fit but a single may. I’m not sure on instructions if it says what size machine you need. Sorry I can’t be anymore helpful. But they are fab!!

This is the first I have ever heard of coverless duvets!
many recommendations??
I have 5 altogether!! 2 from m&s and the 3 spare bed ones from the range! I love the marks’ ones and visitors tell me the range ones are really cozy! I think a few people have bought them!!

I have been influenced to splurge on wool pillows (have been considering this for some time) as given the amount of time I spend in bed, I think it's a worthwhile investment. I've seen complaints about 'shrinkflation' and poor quality standards (notably multi-pack knickers) and definitely think that applies to pillows. I'm also still miffed about having recently had to replace a John Lewis mattress after 5 years. The product description for it now states that it is not recommended ’for regular use', pretty sure that wasn't there when I bought it originally - was hyper-vigilant about the new one.
If anyone is feeling wool-curious, the Woolroom offers 30 or 60 day trials (not sponsored, not an ad)

Just out a team meeting and we’ve been having the ‘how do you have your toast/butter’. Could be a spin off from the duvet thread 😂😂😂

Oooh can I ask mattress advice. I have a custom sized mattress in spare room (room annoying shape and only way to fit in double width bed, length is 1 foot shorter than normal). It's a spring mattress. Recent guests have all complained it isn't comfortable anymore. I had a friend staying on and off for a couple of years so the mattress probably hasn't been rotated/turned regularly.

Could a mattress topper help? I'm going to try spending a night and see how bad it is, and I've already given it a flip, but wondering whether a mattress topper could help and if so does anyone have recommendations?

For a spare room maybe?

Mattresses stress me out. We have a loaf one. It is 10 years old I think. No sagging yet. Moved once and still fine. I know we will need a new one and I will go for loaf again.

It might not be the mattress, it may be an issue with the frame it's sitting on.

Ooh a housekeeping thread , I like. I change my duvet cover once a week in the summer and sometimes my pillow cases twice depending on how sweaty I am 😂. Attractive. Same for the kids beds, once a week. In winter, every two weeks. I have a summer duvet cover on at the moment, it’s a seersucker cotton bought in the John Lewis sale. It was a bargain and does not require ironing which is another plus.
mad for the actual duvet, I have a super warm one for winter and at the moment I am using a summer ( can’t remember what tog) one. I too am of the I side out school of putting your duvet cover on. I feel very grown up/old commenting on a duvet thread .

It's a divan base which I thought was pretty durable/okay for spring mattresses! I get all my mattress/bed info from John Ryan by Design, the FAQs and videos are so informative. Divan base was easiest/cheapest to obtain in a custom size....

Where are you all living with this 4.5 tog in winter lark?

13.5 from Sept (plus blanket from November) for us.

😂😂😂

All your talk about wool has got me thinking…
Honestly wool has been amazing for me. I find it drapes over you better so you don’t have any annoying gaps around your shoulders for cold air to get in. I was sceptical and they’re fairly expensive so I bought mine from the Wool Room as they do a 30 day trial. I waited till they had a sale on but I’d save and buy them full price if I had to now!

Just jumping in. Who knew duvets could be so interesting :ROFLMAO:
I have two duvets, a 4.5 tog for summer and a 15 tog for winter. The 4.5 is way too warm for summer and the 15 isn’t warm enough! I live in an old static caravan so it’s like a greenhouse in the summer and gets ice on the inside of the windows in winter! I can’t win lol
I’m really fussy about bedding - I find so much now is poor quality and scratchy (I’m autistic so more sensitive to how fabrics feel on my skin). I like brushed cotton and jersey bedding and try to pick up some when I see them (as they aren’t hugely common in my experience).

10.5 tog all year around.

During Winter, I used a heated under-blanket and hot water bottles. During Summer, I sleep with a leg out of the bed

Genuinely baffled by how anyone can sleep under 10.5 tog in summer! In fact any time past about April! I am only slim, feel the cold (hands and feet usually cold) and sleep alone and I would be melting under 10.5 tog 🥵

I saw a pillow in IKEA recently for £60!!!! The front of it was blue - some sort of inbuilt cooling pad....
My husband uses one with a cooling pad like that. Not IKEA though I think it was from Amazon for about £30. He loves it but it’s way too firm for me! I have a goose feather pillow from Julian Charles which is really comfortable.
