I had a little google as I was curious why he was sent to crown court and this has come up?

Magistrates Courts can only hand out a maximum of 6 months for a single offence and an unlimited fine, so any crime that carries a sentence longer than that will go to Crown anyway. Revenge Porn has a maximum sentence of two years.
Petty crime like shoplifting is a maximum 6 month sentence and other minor crimes will stay at the Mags court.
All cases will go to Mags court for the plea to be entered then forwarded to the Crown if the sentence is longer than 6 months.
The fact the case has been long and not just thrown out means there will be quite a lot of evidence against him, they have to build a valid case against him before prosecuting which takes time especially now, if there was “no evidence” like he claims it would’ve been thrown out long ago

He’s already been to magistrates to plead. He pled not guilty and now he’s referred to crown court for his trial as the magistrates have insufficient ability to sentence him based on the offences. You never go straight to crown court in a criminal trial, always magistrates first.
