Looking back at the Carry On films, just how in the name of all that’s holy did they get away with portraying Sid James as bleeping sex symbol?? Even as a kid he made me want to vom.
He had the last laugh when they put him in Casino Royale though.

I completely agree. He always looked really rough and weathered and I found his humour really annoying. I enjoyed the Carry On films that didn't feature him far better than where he had a starring role.

Wasn't part of the humour regarding Sid James being cast as a sex symbol, precisely because he was an ugly old fart? That's how I always saw it, with the pretty young girls falling over themselves to get noticed by him, whereas in real life, Sid would have been ignored or told to duck off.

Wouldn't have touched Sid James with a bargepole, for multiple reasons, but he did embody the 'Carry On' films, which I have a fondness for, 'un-woke' as they may be (I don't care, btw). They were good fun, in many ways, but some of the behind-the-scenes life stories were either hair-raising or tragic.

Sid James had a bucketload of screen presence and charisma, which is why he was the star of the Carry Ons.

Apparently Sid never got over losing Babs. He died backstage at a theatre and rumours have abounded ever since that his ghost haunts it. Les Dawson said he saw the ghost of Sid reflected in a mirror ‘and he looked ghastly’, and Les experienced a stabbing pain in his chest. He never set foot in the theatre again.

Carry Ons are very much of their era, aren't they, but I have a fondness for them because I used to watch them with my dad on Sundays. 'Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me,' and 'I seem to have got a little plastered,' (which was an ad lib by Joan Sims and not in the script!) will never fail to make me smile.

I confess I liked Sid as a child, I grew up with Carry on (I suspect I'm a fair bit older than a lot of you) and he was kind of the jovial Uncle who always caused a stir at family parties.
It didn't help that I had an 'Uncle' (one of those family friends you were forced to call Uncle) who reminded me of him so much. Bit of a wide boy, cross between Sid and Del Boy, always brought me gifts of dubious origin, smelled of Old Spice from 200 paces and had a laugh that could stop traffic. I guess I associate the two so sit always makes me smile with fond memories.

There was a Channel 5 show talking about Sid James’s life that was on the other day, featuring interviews with some of his former colleagues and his 3 children

His former female colleagues (Valerie Leon & Anita Harris) said Sid was not in the least bit lechy with them and was more like a fatherly figure. In Valerie’s case there was another man (a member of the crew I think) who was coming onto her and Sid warned him off

I remember seeing a programme about his life ( many years ago).He was ladies man and a gambler, but not portrayed as a nasty person.
Kenneth Williams hated him( Although Kenneth Williams rarely liked anyone).
They did a few of these , and they were extremely good.I remember the Hattie Jacques one as being very sad. They also covered Tony Hancock.

I am conflicted. I also have fond memories of the films as we watched them as a family but even as a young kid the old, ugly men running after beautiful young girls made my skin crawl. i was the same with Benny Hill. Maybe I was woke before it was fashionable? (I’m not woke).
