This thread is so sad to read and highlights the danger we feel as women even in this day and age.
I was thinking reading this, I’m so lucky nothing like this has happened to me. But when I look back, there have been times where men have got too close, touched my leg or bum.
And it seems normal for me to be hyper aware on the rare occasion I walk in the dark (even on a well lit street), for me to not walk next to a parked car that has a man sitting in it in the dark but it shouldn’t be normal, to walk with a key between my fingers. We shouldn’t have to do this.

I saw this being reshared yesterday; 7 years ago officers in the same diplomatic protection unit were investigated for sharing extreme pornography amongst themselves. Those officers were sacked (not charged) and I guess this suspect wasn't involved, but this is what we mean by grape culture; its everywhere, including the met.

It’s not even just grape culture it’s the general misogynistic view of women. I had a female colleague last year get away with firing one of her team for no reason, 2wks after she’d been in hospital after an intentional overdose and the male assistant manager in my team “joked” one day that this woman having massive boobs was why the manager “lets her off so much”

I literally just couldn’t form a response. He’s the same type I think of when I see that quote “only respecting women you’re attracted to isn’t respecting women”

Years ago I knew someone who was a sys admin for a rail company, which meant she could look at anything on the company server at will. She found a stash of child pornography squirreled away on one fella's work computer. Had to call in the police and he was arrested and also lost his job. She also said it really wasn't uncommon to find normal porn on men's desktop drives either. I guess they all do it on their phones instead now - this was back in the days when basic Nokias were a thing. It's lovely to think fellas are so obsessed with it they need to keep it at bloody work as well as at home.

I thought I was being followed once- a stereotypical late night solo walk on an otherwise empty street. (pre-mobile phones!). The guy suddenly started jogging as he got closer then a split second later he shouted “This is my route home but I’m gonna run past you so you so you know I’m not following you”. I’ll never forgot how I went from blind panic when he broke into a run, to instant relief when he hollared at me and sped past!

I have a horrible feeling this case is going to be similar to the Libby Squire case. If the officer did show his warrant card and Sarah got in his car willingly, the lawyers will just say he dropped her off someone where, and even proving abduction could be a challenge, If there isn’t physical evidence in the cars or the poor state of her remains the case will be very circumstantial. I think that’s why a confession will be very important here, there is a load of circumstantial evidence, but circumstantial convictions don’t stand up as well in court.

I do find it very strange that this case has been thrust into the media from very early on. It's like they were aware this was going to be the worst possible outcome and a big case! And low and behold the circumstances have shown that.

I mean, dont get me wrong it should be in the media to maximize coverage and increase the chance of finding someone alive. And its absolutely devastating that this isnt the case with Sarah.
But on the other hand there are missing people constantly and lots never make it beyond local news.

I thought the same when the missing “posters” were being shared online. However at the time I put it down to me being local and therefore it hitting home more. For example I shared it mainly because I’m local and so are many of my followers. Someone on here has since said they think her family etc really ramped up the online campaigning which led to it being more well known?

I think it’s made headline news because of the fact he’s a serving police officer, but I’m sure people’s views as to why it’s headline news will be manipulated to suit their own agenda.

Terrible

Schools can’t do everything. Parents must take some responsibility here. Someone’s son has been out there and murdered a woman who was just walking home. A class on it in school may not have as big as impact as we would wish. Morals and values, rights and wrongs come from parents and are instilled in us from birth. The school has a role in backing this up obviously but it must be with everyone else. Not solely them

Oh I’m not saying schools should be solely responsible, and even if parents do their best if you wanna murder someone you will regardless of your upbringing. But I just think if we’re going to do things to help girls why are there not classes to teach boys?

I really hope that his colleagues don't try to let him off with 'mental health'. It's appalling how many of us on this thread have said of times where something happened and police weren't interested Also astonishing how many men on social media are either butt hurt or, saying things like "women tell us how we can be more aware"....erm, it's f**king obvious, don't perv on people, dont catcall, don't w*** on public transport, don't follow people home, take 'NO' as the answer and BACK OFF, don't walk directly behind women when you can cross the road instead. Why should women have to tell you how to behave?! Makes me so angry how a lot of people say they didn't realise this happens to women all the time. Must be a nice privilege to be male where this rit doesn't cross the mind.

Thinking aloud here but another thing we need to tackle in society is how drunk girls are treated

by this I mean LITERALLY our safety

it should be a crime for a bus driver to refuse entry to female passengers at night etc

nightclubs should not be able to eject female customers for being too drunk etc

what’s making me think of this is the first and ONLY time I’ve ever been kicked out of a club looool was in Glasgow, I was blackout drunk (if you know you know) and knew no one in Glasgow aside from the girls I was with in the club. Luckily one of them saw me being led outside (looool) and came with me. We walked back to her sisters and apparently went into a random house party en route - I don’t remember any of that. Imagine if they had just taken me outside and I was so blackout drunk I just got picked up by some dodgy people?

I’ve also seen bus drivers refuse entry to plenty of people with no Oyster card. Once, I was on the night bus home from central London and some tourists tried to get on clearly having only just come from the airport and not knowing about oyster etc. This is back when cash was still accepted. They only had a £20 note which the driver refused due to having no change. Someone came down from the top deck and gave them change to pay and the driver refused it as they hadn’t paid for themselves WTAF?! He then stopped the engine and called police as he said he was getting abused from drunk passengers. It was all so dumb - it was 5am and everyone just wanted to get home who cares who paid for them?!

Yeah it was out there pretty early on and now it's everywhere because of the horrific circumstances and who he is.

I saw it on my social media a lot as I'm not far from London and know people living or working there but it was also made public in the media quickly.

She worked in marketing and so did her partner apparently, so he would have knowledge about how best to get posts reached out online and potentially if the company she worked for also shared the posters, media and industry contacts may have then reshared and it would quickly gain momentum.

One thing I keep thinking is that he must not be that bright. I know he is in the Met and all, but to take someone from a very busy location with all the risk of CCTV and dash cam footage seems a strange choice. As does hiring a car, surely he would realise it would obviously be linked to him.. And as for indecent exposure outside a fast food restaurant... that was caught on CCTV, It is really brazen surely if you were switched on you wouldn't have done something so public. On the other hand it scares me to think that he could have started out flashing (or worse) women in more rural areas that aren't built up. I suppose he may have either been trying to push limits or perhaps was being more manic with his urges and therefore not thinking as logically.

I think as well given lockdown it’s almost even more shocking / there’s less going on generally so things can gain more attention than they maybe would when life was normal?

As someone’s said before sometimes if the person has been doing it a long time they end up trying to get caught for whatever reason. I wonder also if he was being investigated for the exposure was Sarah a “duck it” moment, thinking he may be caught soon so getting a last hurrah in so to speak? Idk. As you said could be manic behaviour

I work in education and we do a whole lesson with the boys on all of this, we don’t have much time but we have constantly kept adding things about how to help women feel safe
