I'm only lurking here (ex GTL, shb member, though again, mostly a lurker) this is re Caitlin Moran napalm bit. I've read the book, thought it was tit. Can't find the relevant bit online but this review from Amazon says it better than I ever could:
R. Elliott
Offensive, crude rubbish masquerading as feminism.
4 September 2018
Verified Purchase
Format: Paperback
I bought this book on the basis of reviews heralding it as a worthy contribution to modern feminism. It is anything but. My patience was wearing thin by the time I'd reached the chapter where the 'author' suggests that all women are paying for Brazilian waxes etc. and even scheduling their lives around them - what nonsense. It then went on to state that women are wearing increasingly tiny knickers. While there might be a small proportion of women who wear next to nothing as underwear, I'm certain that the vast majority of women buy and wear ordinary-sized knickers and are not thinking about either the Hollywood porn industry that the 'author' seems so obsessed with or the sexual allure of such underwear on an everyday basis. The final straw came for me in the chapter on bras. The 'author' talks about the effect throwing a bra at a 9 year old boy would have, i.e. the boy would be disgusted and run away as if from a rat. Unfortunately, the author does not leave it there, and goes on to compare such a reaction with that of the Vietnamese child covered in napalm! Everyone has seen that horrific image. Indeed, once you have seen that photograph, it is indelibly etched in your memory. For such cruelty and horror to be used by this so-called 'author' in such a flippant manner, with wilful disregard for decency and humanity, disgusted me to such an extent that I did something I have never done before - I tore the book in two. This woman is a disgrace, and any self-respecting publishing house should never have allowed such offensive material to make it into print.
Brilliant. I also expected that book to be “a worthy contribution to modern feminism” as the reviewer says. The fact that it was marketed as such was an insult to our intelligence, if you ask me.

I hadn’t remembered the “napalm” comment but it’s exactly what I’d expect from “I’m mad me!” CM. She thinks she’s way funnier than she is.

Glad for DO'P that it was all resolved and she got a happy ending.

But - prawn? Writers of comedy, published authors, well respected columnists christened a woman prawn for their own amusement? (As well as the rest)It's not even a proper Spoonerism.
"I saw the best minds of my generation, dragging themselves through the streets at Dawn looking for an angry fix, burning for the ancient heavenly connection on Twitter to call her prawn..."

Don't know any Last Poets songs, soz, not as cultured as Sali (couldn't afford the jumpers anyway *povface*)

I’m sorry if I come across a bit thick but does anyone have an idea what she’s planning to do with this “folder of names and addresses” of people who are trolling her?

She says she’s not planning on getting the police involved or doxxing, but she still says it in a threatening manner?

I am 99.9% sure she’s speaking utter bollocks and I hope no one is afraid of what she’s saying.

I certainly am not! She can work out my name if she wants to but I’m not sure what she could do with it 😂.

This woman's career depends on her honesty. She has repeatedly stated how honest she is. She even had a book published, the title of which contained that very word (though its meaning was 'kind of/sort of honest' but we don't talk about that, look a woman can want to look pretty AND make bad puns that don't make much sense at the same time, you know. It's just patronising nonsense to assume otherwise and frankly, even I'm bored shitless of having to keep saying this thin justification of why women's disposable income should be spent on empowering themselves. Not my income though, I get most this empowering stuff for free. This makes me a beacon of empowerment, super-empowered, uber-empowered. *Valleysface*
Catching up on this thread and *Valleysface* has made me spit out Lemsip twice this morning already

Yup. She is intensely annoying and someone needs to tell her that her wacky ladette bollox isn’t (and never was) funny.

Also who the hell can tear a book in two?! 🤣

It’s just such a strange coincidence that within a few days of (perfectly reasonable) comments left on her column about the mistreatment of employees at a beauty company often featured in said column, is within days, also the same time when SH has been trolled so badly on an unrelated forum that she has had to then... suspend all comments on her Guardian column.
Yes, funny that! Almost as if she was creating a diversion or smokescreen for everyone to be distracted by? 🧐 🔍

It's all for show, she wouldn't really have much of a leg to stand on, as she has used her mateys and dog walker to intimidate others.

Commented here yesterday as a newbie and since then I've read all 4 threads. On balance the vast majority of comments seem to be very balanced, and echo what I've been thinking for years now. A few catty comments here and there but that's the nature of the beast when you're a famous influential tweeter.

I could go on an on but there's no point it's all been said.

I'm not at all surprised to hear BB were lining her pockets. Personally I don't rate the brand I've bought so many products based on SH's recommendations and they've all been tit. I must have been suffering from some kind of Stockholm syndrome because I just kept going back for more.
Anyhow last Spring SH came to my local department store to do a promotion with BB - it was on her Instagram account and was also mentioned on the department's page too. At this stage I was still intrigued by her face and really wanted to know for sure how much work she'd had done! So in I went but she wasn't around at the time. Went back an hour later (3pm) and still no sign so I asked a sales assistant and her blank look was priceles. She eventually asked a colleague who told me Sali was finished for the day - fair enough but the fact that the 20 yr old assistant hadn't a bleeping notion who or what I was talking about spoke volumes !!

Regarding the highly emotive video, it all screams of "the best defence is to attack" mode. It strikes me that she's completely misjudged this. People here were once long time followers and fans with some buying power to invest in our skin like she told us to and we believed her. And now she's effectively thrown us (and her integrity) under the bus. I do think this is the rock she will perish on.
The fact that you were so ‘intrigued by her face’ that you popped along to a dept store to see her in the wild is brilliant! I bet she was there an hour max. It’s a hard life being Sali

I wonder what Dawn’s take is? Because Sali’s excuse was pretty lame (a mean girl told me bad things about her!).

I doubt they’re friends. Friendly, if their paths ever cross, maybe, but personally I would not be able to be friends with a woman who was (by the looks of it) the ringleader of a really nasty and public hate campaign.

Yeah the last straw for me with CM was when she got drunk one new year and did a twitter thread about how the secret to happiness for women was to just be her, including how important it was to wear shorts over tights, backcomb your hair, wear eyeliner, and marry your best friend, and I just thought who the duck are you? You can't even conceive of a woman different from you. Then I read how to be a woman and realised...yeah, that is exactly who she is. Fun book, fine as an autobiography, but not a great feminist tract, just marketing bumpf the same level of the spice girls.

I wonder... did Sali make up with Dawn Porter before or after Dawn married a Hollywood actor and became ‘cool’?

Ah, the lying mutual friend. It's always someone else's fault, Sali just mindlessly went along for the bullying ride, instead of finding out the truth for herself.

This doesn't paint you in a better light!
Well as long as she ‘approached her to apologised hugely’ that’s ok. duck, this woman is a writer. She obviously typed this this at a hundred miles an hour in Sali panic mode again.

I wonder... did Sali make up with Dawn Porter before or after Dawn married a Hollywood actor and became ‘cool’?
Can I just say (for when Sali and her spies read this 👋) that Dawn O’Porters’ husband is WAY nicer, cooler hotter and more successful than yours, Sali. To use Dawn’s favourite expression for things that make her happy - 100 FOOT JIZZ!!!!!!!!

I wonder what Dawn’s take is? Because Sali’s excuse was pretty lame (a mean girl told me bad things about her!).

There’s no way they are friends. Dawn is too cool.

I think nowadays we are far more "visual" people, due to technology. With the recent Guardian column, what do we really get bar a subjective opinion? They could have included pictures of the mascara wands, what the mascara actually looks like when worn etc. It's what you would expect with other influencers, who include pics of everything from the ingredients list, packaging, how it wears after a day and so on. The guardian could even include how things like the same shade of lipstick look on different skintones/hair colours, tips on how to actually wear those hair accessories and look chic... etc. I guess like others here, we remember the video content that used to accompany the column, but now at the most it's headshots/runway photos/stock photos at best. The guardian has done better with progressing their fashion content, to show the journalist, and a more diverse range of models wearing and styling outfits, whereas the beauty section is a bit weak, especially when there is so much hypocrisy over ethical values rather than taking any clear stance.

With the mascara column too, it's a time of climate protest, yet nothing in those products is beneficial to the planet, and ultimately a frivolous purchase. I think really it would have been a good opportunity to showcase what better alternatives there are, rather than advertising L'oreal. A quick google, showed me there are brands which are vegan & palm oil free, and package in metal, glass, bamboo, some that are more like modern mascara, and others in those "cake" formulas. I even recall videos on DIY versions. I just think that would be so much more helpful, and especially to read an opinion that admits if they are flawed, okay, or fantastic.

I think someone mentioned on here, about having different journalists contribute to the column, some showcasing adverts, others tips & tricks etc which would be an improvement. Sorry to bring her up again, but Violette fr did exactly this, and moved her channel into including easy meditation guides, nourishing cooking videos, others giving makeup tutorials etc and it revamped things and was a bit more holistic of an approach. I quite like how they all have the confidence to just start doing makeup tutorials in the middle of cafes too, ha.

I love Violette's tutorials, her voice is so soothing and I love the approach of just doing the make up in a bar/cafe

Can you imagine Sali trying to do the same in the Chilli Pickle :ROFLMAO:

Having different journalists contribute to the column is a great idea. Nigella Lawson took over India Knight’s Style column for a couple of weeks this summer and she was brilliant. I wonder if the fact that the Guardian column is showing its age is part of the motivation for this furore.

Yes! Nigella was excellent. I liked her a lot already but didn’t know the extent of her passion for beauty. I bought the cheapie mascara she recommended and it was so good. I don’t read India’s column.

Nigella Lawson used to have a beauty column ages ago in Saturday Times magazine supplement. It was brilliant!

Hi! So after reading mumsnet I decided to pop over and read this cesspit of the lowest of the low scum in life and was shocked; that so many on MN and Sali totally misrepresent what's posted here. It's way more mild than any AIBU that is about a celeb!!

Have read all 4 threads over the last two days and enjoyed it. Sali must be living in a total bubble. The most telling thing was the confusion after her video as everyone here said it couldn't possibly be here because it didn't correlate at all. Then in her comments she confirmed it was tattle.

I'll probably just lurk here, but tattle seems like the only thing holding these people on Instagram and twitter accountable, a regulator in some way and I can see why people like Sali are going loco. I'm from a family of lawyers and any talk of legal action is ridiculous, does she also think TripAdvisor is trolling when someone leaves a negative review on a hotel?

Keep up with the good work!

Now off to find other threads to get up to speed with 👀
