I don't understand the obsession with reading a book whilst brushing teeth.

1. Surely you only brush teeth for a couple of minutes and therefore only read a page.
2. Surely as it is a paper copy you would get splashes on it
3. Can you not be alone with random thoughts for 2 mins that you have to escape into fiction? It just seems a really unpractical task to multitask. An audio book on the other hand, fine, if you are already listening.

I think Ruby is a kind soul but she is certainly in her bubble of privilege.

I'm pretty sure that she never reads while brushing her teeth. She just included that in a videos a long time ago to make herself seem even more nerdy and quirky but people found it odd and had trouble believing it so now she's perpetuating the lie. I have a feeling a lot of things she includes in those routines aren't really what she would do on the daily but more some type of ideal for her.

She could be very private about that aspect of her life.

I'm the type of person who makes disgusting jokes especially about sex. However, when it comes to discussing it with anyone whether it be a family member, close friend or boyfriend/girlfriend, I get very uncomfortable and awkward.

I'm not saying Ruby is the same as me, she definitely does not strike me as the type to have a dark sense of humour. However, she does strike me as quite private when it comes to certain things and I reckon that's one of them.

We're not obligated to know I guess as she is a StudyTube channel.

I just don’t understand, ruby was only living with one other person not in halls with lots of students. And I imagine there’s not much face to face teaching so the risk of getting covid would be really low especially as she’s in a tier 1 area. I think it’s more about wanting the comfort of home and being scared of being home alone. But at some point you do have to grow up and get over these things, I’m at uni on my own and I’m a year younger than ruby. I want to go home but realistically I’ve got to stay because I’ve already paid rent. I also think her parents do encourage her in this childish behaviour

I’m sort of in the same situation. I’d love to be at home right now since most of my teaching is online but I’ve signed a contract and I know I wouldn’t be productive at home - My uni and home are both tier 3 so either way it’s high risk. It’s all part of having to make sacrifices, just like everyone is having to do!
I think Ruby worker herself up a bit especially since she hadn’t even been in a shop and then jumped straight into living alone again

Plus, I feel like she likes to be seen as super intelligent and I reckon it would have burst her ego that she is not as clever as some people or a similar level to herself.

This 100%, someone in my year who went to Cambridge (since graduated) was top of our year all the time but it was a big fish in a small pond situation so when they got to Cambridge and were surrounded by people just as smart (and smarter!) it absolutely knocked them for six, first year was a huge adjustment for them bc they'd always been hyped up by our school for being sooo smart (which they are) but at Oxbridge everyone is super smart and you have to really work to be #1, and I think Ruby would've had a similar crisis had she got in

I agree with you to a certain point but we don't know if Ruby is interested in dating or romance. She might be taking her time or just have no interest or attraction for a partner. I believe the uni has helped to a degree; when she was in school she was very much set in her comfort zone but she's made friends and she's slowly maturing. I hope she isn't held back by anxieties regarding relationships and if that's not the case, she shouldn't feel pressure do live as everyone else does, simply to be fulfilling the 'requirements' of her age.

That is a quote from Anne of Green Gables, and I think it was used in the series Anne with an E as well. I believe the character was feeling joyous for being able to experience true autumn days; that's the context of the gratefulness of the quote.

I remember her saying how she "decapitated" a sandwich of something like that, regarding her devouring it with vigour. I think she'd like an extensive vocabulary and mostly she does okay but being well spoken doesn't mean checking the thesaurus and replacing all the words with clever sounding ones.

I feel like being a good, engaging writer means knowing how to use regular words everyone uses in a way that's clever and inspires images. You don't need fancy vocabulary to evoke stunning imagery or a certain mood in a scene.

I just watched that video where she’s mad about noise but that’s what it’s like in student flats!! And she said it was only 10:30 - that’s not really awful, in my halls they say noise after 11 is not acceptable. It just sounded like her flat mates were talking (as is expected in uni flats!!) she should try living in my flat where 2 of the lads started screaming at each other at 3am and had to call security

For me, it's the fact that the study tubers who I have seen talking about it such Ruby, Unjaded Jade and Jack Edwards all did their A-levels and exams under 'normal' circumstances. They are also all from privileged backgrounds and most likely wouldn't have been impacted as much if they did A-levels this year. For once, why can't they sit back and acknowledge it's not about themselves. Interestingly, those three all seemed to say roughly the same thing which makes me wonder if their management told them to say it (considering they're all managed by Sixteenth).

Its hard to say, she has led a very sheltered life and not had to ever struggle or do things for herself and I think that has made her very unconfident. I think she should try and stop avoiding things that cause her to worry, bc the more you avoid your fears the worse they become.

I feel like she just needs to make baby baby steps with doing "fear activities" as it were, eg I used to have a stunning combo of extremely lacking confidence and imposter syndrome which meant I never spoke in class, even during my fave classes, so one day I was like okay maybe if I put my hand up once or twice a week that's okay (which is tiny but more than nothing!) and then once I'd done it a few times I realised the world wouldn't come down around me and I could actually do it! The rest is history! You just have to take the scary/anxiety-inducing thing and do it just One Time to take the apprehension away and then its easier every time after that..I think Ruby's tendency to run for the hills at everything just makes the paranoia and the "what ifs" worse and worse unfortunately

Some of what she says is such waffle, like "having a study space that revolves around academics" - yeah duh, it's a study space?? Affordable vintage desks on Etsy??? When she said that she didn't even look like she believed herself. Some of her book recommendations (that I've read) didn't seem very dark academia to me either, like The Ocean at the End of the Lane? The Book Thief? It seems like she included that literally just because of the "books" association. How is Little Women DARK academia?? She didn't really explain anything. I'm not especially into dark academia and don't know much apart from the basics but it doesn't seem like Ruby really grasps it either.

Being "intelligent" is to be able to manipulate and articulate conflicts using OWN LOGIC [...] Erimentha is clearly just someone who has a very good memory for reciting textbooks, and is NOT HYPOTHETICALLY "SMART".

I don't think Ruby has much independent thought, she just recites what she learns in books and that's why she does a massive amount of "work", which really amounts to memorising published opinions.

I honestly think the exact same, shes obviously not stupid but she just doesn’t come across as being particularly intelligent to me and also, for someone who reads so many books, I really don’t think shes great at writing tbh. Whenever I read her instagram captions, the way she uses language when she describes things is just really odd? Like for example here where she talks about autumn mornings being her dads favourite ‘temperament’, and then goes on to describe the sun as ironically seeming warmer in winter than summer. I don’t think its necessarily wrong but to me it just doesn’t flow particularly well as you read it and sounds a bit like shes been told to do a creative writing description of the weather at school or something. Idk its really hard to pin point but I personally have seen writing of much higher standards from people who are younger than her and far less educated. It doesn’t come naturally at all to her and she tends to over complicate things and use big words to try and sound cleverView attachment 271283

She writes like someone who has heard certain terms before (like 'temperament' for example) and presumes she knows what they mean. She uses them in sentences to sound poetic, only it actually sounds obscure and not quite correct - reminds me of that guy from The Princess Bride:

Is it just me or she's look better and more her age with a proper hair cut? It's nitpicky but I think that her hair makes her look even younger, it's sort of an awkward length and it doesn't seem like it's been cut in ages. Of course maybe it's just because we're in a pandemic and she hasn't been to the hairdresser in a while to avoid contacting the disease.

I've often thought having a few inches chopped off would make the world of difference to her hair. I think past a certain point that super long hair just looks a bit much. When I was a kid hair past your waist was like almost a status symbol, like princess hair, but then aged 14/15 or so girls would have it cut to look a bit more mature. I feel like Ruby could be clinging to her hair in that sense.

I wonder what Ruby would be like in a 9-5 job - she'd probably constantly take her work home with her to fill the evenings. She never truly switches off as it is.

I agree. I don't know if her heart has truly moved on from Oxford yet, I think she's still carrying a torch for an old college in Oxford but I like that she doesn't let this set her back in any way. After graduating, if she wants a post grad degree at Oxford in her heart, I hope she'll be able to fulfill that dream. I think it will be much better for her mental health if she approaches a Oxford degree with a sound mind and a clear plan. I don't think she would have thrived had she got accepted for her undergrad degree. From all the studytubers who got a rejection from their "dream uni", Ruby is coming off as the most mature one with her progress so far.

Sorry I’m just going to say it.
She needs to grow up.

I think her parents baby her, she is a 20 year old. A young ADULT.
At her age I was pregnant with my second child, had my home, engaged, studying and worked part time. Maybe I grew up far too quickly, but I can guarantee even as a teenager I would not be asking my mother to film me dancing around dressed up as a character.
