New thread title suggestion: Ruby Granger #46 "An Oxford Elegy"

Excerpt from that work of the same title by Ralph Vaughan Williams:

Come, let me read the oft-read tale again:
The story of that Oxford scholar poor,
Who, one summer morn forsook his her friends,
And came, as most men deem’d, to little good,
But came to Oxford and his her friends no more.

Also she filmed this video four weeks ago (on at least two different days, which for once she acknowledges instead of just pretending to have randomly changed her outfit), and was packing to go home… on a Monday? A mere week into the new tahrrm?
I've noticed she filmed several videos weeks ago but is only just beginning to upload them to YouTube. It's like she doesn't have a schedule of what videos she needs to upload at the right time as she shouldn't be uploading this video a month late and the fact she went back home a mere week into the new term is confirmation that she isn't enjoying herself at Oxford because if she was she would not been needing to go home 1 week into Trinity Term.

WTF is she rambling on about in this video? There is somehow less substance in her monologue than there is in her poetry. It's like listening to somebody with dementia speak.

Tbf I always study in coffee shops. I can't concentrate in libraries. Oxford doesn't really have many study spaces beyond silent libraries...

Two things that stood out to me from that video: when drinking from bottles or cans, Ruby doesn't purse her lips, just opens her mouth and it looks gross. And I'm pretty sure she said "100 pre cent".
With 'pre cent' I swear she must have mislearned that word years ago and it has stuck, like she cannot relearn the correct spelling or pronunciation. It's such a basic word too, how is she still saying it wrong? She's an Oxford Masters student...

Doing a DPhil at Oxford would be a good excuse to keep being able to go home every weekend and every break. Surely that's enough of a reason for Roobs.

I wonder if this is the reason she went back to Oxford for one night.
This video was taken during the Oxford Literary Festival which took place between the 16th and 24th of March and this is not the reason why she went back to Oxford for one night,

We’re not as diverse as a country. I remember reading that about 89% of the UK population are white. That was 5+ years ago but gives you a sense of demographics.

Ruby is also from a very white area and went to a small private school so you can assume largely white too, based on where she lives. So I don’t think it’s odd or strange that she doesn’t have a diverse friend group. She also doesn’t have that many friends anyway so it’s not that surprising.

I went to a wedding last year not far from where Ruby is from. The guests were 99% white and it wasn’t a small guest list. It’s just the nature of where the groom and bride are from.

You could say that she should try to diversify her friend group but I would argue that doing that intentionally- seeking out diverse friends because they’re not white- is even worse. See unjaded Jade who seems to revel in her “exotic” friends…
Thank you. Yes, I agree, I certainly don't want her to make it a hobby or an aesthetic. I have never been to the UK and really just have no idea what it would be like in the average town or school. I just know the universities are very diverse, especially places like Oxford and Cambridge, but here that is definitely a norm. The US is known as the "melting pot" and it is just normal to have, in many places, a lot of diversity, so you simply grow up with that and we always have friends from a wide variety of ethnic background, faiths, etc.. It is no big deal, so I found it odd that she never mixed or befriended anyone from a different background than her. And sad, too, to be honest. You are right, it isn't like she has a massive circle of friends, but mine isn't huge, yet still, way more diverse than hers.

The fact that she’s not talking about it is what’s making me (and probably many others) think that she’s NOT passionate or particularly knowledgeable about her topic.
I agree with you entirely the fact she isn't talking about her dissertation or has not talked about any of the her modules in detail just confirms that she is not passionate about the course and that she doesn't have any knowledge about the period in which she studying. She would have been better off choosing a Masters in one of the other time periods instead preferably the 1830-1914 Masters or the 1900-present day Masters.

That'd be an insult to Liziqi & lot of other similar youtubers.
We're already insulting Lewis Carroll with this middle school lame video project. Why not a youtuber? 😂
Besides, blueberries aside, blue food is hardly appealing. You know what they say, Blue food, blue turd. The proof is in the pudding!

I imagine it is only for 2 reasons. One, to keep her foothold in Oxford for as long as she can, since she probably won't be returning. Two, because she is still writing her dissertation and needs access to materials she can't take out and bring home. Other than that, the minute she can, she will be back at home, crammed in her tiny bedroom, dreaming of being an author and wondering who and what she really is.
The Oxford room is little more than a set for her. She's only ever there to film videos and she can still milk it a bit longer.

When she's talking about the books she got recently her voice is totally different. It actually sounds natural and not pitched and strained. She should be talking like this and not try to sound childish.

If any Tattlers are between 16-25, the ROH has a decently priced programme as well as special young people performance nights https://www.roh.org.uk/ticket-deals/young-roh

That said, the other big Ballet companies in the UK are excellent too, and better priced! For example, the English National Ballet has tickets starting at 15 pounds for Giselle later this year: https://www.sadlerswells.com/whats-on/english-national-ballet-akram-khans-giselle/
To add to this, ROH, National Theatre and the Globe have “Friday Rush” tickets. Released at about midday each Friday, you can get tickets for the following week for £5-10.

I must really be missing Roobee, because she immediately sprang to mind this morning when I read this passage in Middlemarch

Totally agree about the Royal Opera House gifted experience. And once again, she films so many people in the building and doesn’t give them the respect of blurring their faces.

Random thought, a few years ago she was really into gymnastics, she had that expensive equipment in her garden and often included in her vlogs that she’d practise often (who knows if she actually did!) but I remember her filming walk overs, flexibility etc. and being good at it? She also attended trampolining and stuff at Exeter. Did she just give all of this up? Feel like Oxford would have lots of great facilities for this!
She was pretty okay at it, but I think once she injured herself in 2020? 2021? she gave up.
