Huh but if she's really not going on that US trip, what will she do with that time instead? Also, I seem to remember reading here that Ruby was going to get some sort of teaching job? Is that still coming up, or was that cancelled as well?

I'm also wondering all the time what things are like re: that novel she wrote. The book is finished and she's had an agent for a good while now, yet apparently she still hasn't sold the book? Will it ever be published? And also, is she applying to master's degrees and if so, to which ones? So many questions lol. But it is just weird cause she's announced/hinted at so many plans but now it seems like she isn't actually pursuing any of them. At least she made that coconut tea, I guess? Maybe birding and blending that tea just took up all her time, who knows

Personally I would not be surprised if the recent downfall of her mental health is due to adulting issues arising fast and furious. Taking a solo trip to the US, working after New Year's (doesn't she supposedly have something lined up in teaching?) and she also mentioned learning how to drive, which also doesn't seem to be happening. Instead, her post graduate life has been filled with empty accomplishments, being a Jack of all Trades (tea, sponsorships, trips to foreign countries that she didn't really immerse in, Miss Patina, her planner, etc.) and a Mistress of None. Her constant need to identify with an aesthetic or a character, be it fictional or non-fictional, screams the fact that she has absolutely no idea of who she is or what the heck she is doing in life. A simple job in retail would do her wonders. But she is too busy being tied to her mother's apron strings. The older she gets, the harder it is going to be to catch up. She doesn't need to know a lifelong career right now. But she ought to be working and socializing with her peers in a healthy way, not chasing after little girls for possible playmates and penpals.

The teaching thing isn't due to start until January. I'm still betting she's embellished and she's just harassed her old private school teachers into lettting her do a couple more guest speaking appearances at her old school, so it won't be a huge career move for her.

It can take a long time even for talented authors to get a book deal, so Ruby pinning all her hopes on having a huge book deal fall in her lap straight after graduation despite her having no talent at all was always ludicrous. Every sample she showed was terrible even after 7+ drafts, and now she's apparently just moved on to another half-assed book.

She's not built for rejection and criticism, so it's no wonder she's been endlessly miserable this year. She was banking on a magic book deal dropping in her lap, her bad seagul poetry winning competitions and her essays getting published, and none of it's gonna happen. Her vanity projects with other companies have all been a bust, her business is dying and her YouTube channel is on a steady decline. She doesn't want to work at anything, she just wanted a golden ticket to avoid adulthood for longer. So she's probably panicking now she has nothing to show for her "gap year" and the clock's ticking to get something lined up.

I doubt she'll apply for a Masters at this point. She must know she'll be out of her depth and wouldn't have a hope without Blakeney to do most of the work for her. I think there's more chance of her going back to undergrad to redo a theology/philosophy degree, which is probably why she's dusting off her bible reading and old theology lecture handouts.

Man, reading all that's making me feel depressed for her. 😂 I agree about the book deal. Her expectations were too high going into the project and it's just not realistic, even for a very talented writer.

I did wonder whether the US trip would ever happen, because I just couldn’t see Ruby doing all of these things she wanted to do on her own (although wasn’t she visiting friends and/or family?) The thing that got me was that I don’t think that Ruby had really considered that the US isn’t like the UK, particularly with regard to public transport. I had always got the impression that she’d never really considered how difficult it was going to be to visit all of these literary places without a car - a city break would be doable but not traipsing round the countryside.

I think that she had something booked but then for whatever reason, didn’t go - a few weeks back Ruby was quite quiet for a while and I wonder if that was when she was supposed to be travelling. I am starting to feel quite sorry for Ruby, she’s clearly unwell and whilst she might be stuck in a prison of her own making, it’s never a nice place to be. However she tries to hide it with whatever aesthetic she’s currently obsessed with, she’s falling behind her peers in terms of ‘normal’ social development and it’s going to be increasingly hard to catch up. She seems to be struggling more now that ‘school’ has started again and she’s no longer there.

Tbh I can 100% see her doing that and also becoming a religious nut in the first place. She says she has poor mh as well atm which could easily see her getting sucked into religion…

Yeah, I wouldn't put it past Ruby or her mum believing in the power of prayer over therapy. Religion has rituals, reading, repetitiveness. Ticks all the right boxes.

I am really really afraid when Ruby whould do a Master in Religion. I mean. She ticks all the boxes or better her mom for being/become a religios nut and she is rn in a very instable phase and if she would do that.. I know excactly where she would be in two years. Thats not good. And besides I have my problem with Ms Granger - seeing a troubled sould and then getting themself into a severe problem: not good

She might be entertaining the idea of becoming more religious without the implication of going back to undergrad. While I see why one might do that, I don't get how doing another BA could "benefit" Ruby: wouldn't it look too stagnant for someone like her who has this whole idea of being at the top of the academic world? Though she doesn't seem interested in pursuing a master either (I'm not really sure about that as I have lost track of her since her videos became too insufferable for me lol). Either way, I wouldn't put it past her to join weird religious groups "for research" and end up sucked in those which ofc can't end well.

Don't forget to mention that we don't know exactly which book we are talking about, since she's apparently writing 14 books at the same time.

I thought the same as you, she went quiet and I thought oh good maybe she's gone off travelling- although that is a big thing to do alone and I haven't done it myself outside my home country. I do feel for her, I had a crap time when I graduated. It was a bad time for graduates anyway and I had no connections, hadn't really gone the extra mile during my degree to boost my CV and thought all these wonderful jobs in my field (art) were just going to fall into my lap, not helped by my lecturers telling me to send my work off here and there and it would be snapped up (it wasn't). By about November I'd signed on at the job centre and it took until the next spring for me to move town and actually find a job- the moving seemed to help. It can be harsh out there when you graduate, I was clueless about my next steps. If I could go back I'd do things very differently! The benefit of hindsight.

My first two and a half years after graduating were absolute hell and misery. The pandemic starting didn't help either. It took me two and a half years to get a job. I feel she must be going insane with all her busy work but no clear goals. She clearly needs external goals to function.

She's been churning out the same exact videos over and over for years, and the business with her name on it has released the exact same generic planner twice a year for the last few years; I don't think she's overly concerned with looking stagnant, just as long as she can appear busy.

I can easily see her posting a 'Why I'm going back to uni' video in which she says she's rediscovered her love of philosophy and theology and rambles some nonsense about it never being too late to chase your dreams despite what the bullies say. Throw in a literary quote from some dead scholar saying sometimes you have to go back to go forward and her fans will praise her "bravery" for being "honest" and credit her with normalising the already normal by making a pivot in her education.

She only cares about getting praise (deserved or not) and delaying adulthood however she can. At undergrad, she already has a system in place for getting consistently high grades without doing much - if any - of her own work. She'd cherry-pick a philosophy/religion course either at a university close enough for mummy to drive her there and back every day, or an Open University course so she could do it from home.

Then it'd be 3 more years of pretending to be a child genius in her room, coasting on a degree she has no real interest in, waving Firsts around on camera chasing praise, parroting philosophy quotes from the lecture handouts to sound intelligent and recycling all her study content again. She'd convince herself that she's achieving something and that she's being VARRY PRODOCKTIVE by juggling another degree with her usual aimless busywork.

And she'd get enough "I'm struggling to hand in my assignments for my first degree and Ruby's already on her second degree! Life goals!" compliments and misguided jealousy to drown out anyone questioning why she's wasting another 3 years on another degree when she actively avoids learning anything and will never use it.

It's quite sad seeing her like this, as mentioned before I think rejection is something she has never had to deal with before and now with her book deal and masters application possibly being the reason why she's in a bad place mentally. Most of us have had to deal with rejection whether it's jobs or studies or bad grades. For Ruby this is very much alien to her and unlike school days where teachers will give you opportunities to shine and even at university when she did the internship, adulthood you have to work on these things, they aren't given to you. She really needs to get therapy to learn to deal with rejection and adulthood because even the most popular influencers can miss out on brand deals etc. I just think she should seek help and also work on skills that aren't her aligning to the writer persona she has created.

it makes sense, I didn't think of it like that but you're definitely right

She hasn’t posted anything anywhere for a few days… much as I love to imagine her canceling the trip because she can’t bear to go away from mummy after all, I’m pretty sure she’s just busy packing all her Mispah Teena plastic dresses and will resurface soon on the other side of the water.

She did say she’s going in the Autumn so I wouldn’t be completely shocked if she’s on a flight with no wifi

The thing is she shouldn't feel aimless or as if she's not doing anything. She's a YouTuber. I wouldn't guess exactly how much that makes for her but her subscriber count would definitely qualify it as more than just a hobby. I'm not sure why she doesn't just focus on producing more videos if she's taking a year out from study? I wish she'd just do a makeup line or release a music video already.

when i would have her size of followers, I had produced so many videos and collabs with other youtubers and had so many creative ideas. if i had her money i would even try to travel a little bit. and all the books she writes: so many instagrammers have gotten contracts through er insta activity. there are so many authors out there who published idk 6 books a year by a ebook publisher due to filming and writing about their progress of writing. ruby could have all done that. rebranding herself. trying new things out. but she did none of it.
and i dont know if this is poor lazyiness or her mental health struggles that she realize that she has to change. college time is over. childhood is over.
