It's an investment in her future as a bestselling WRITER, clearly.

OT story: I recently had a Bad Spider Experience. I was in the bath and a big spider abseiled down on its string, paused directly in front of my face, then plopped into the water for no discernible reason, where it promptly drowned and floated around me in circles while I was trying to wash. I hate the summer.

OT bug story I saved a horrible big brown fly yesterday. It had ended up on its back in the street and couldn’t get up, so of course I had to help… and nudging it wasn’t working, so in the end I had to have it climb on my finger I couldn’t take it more than two seconds and sort of gently shook it off immediately, and thankfully it landed right side up. I was ridiculously shook by this ordeal but hey, at least the fly didn’t end up like our friend Frederick.

On topic, I went back on TikTok and holy cow she’s uploading every fragrant fart that passes through her brain. She seems to be into giving us an ootd and a book rec (not even books that she’s read, although I guess that’s a given) every day, twice a day if we’re truly blessed.

She could post genuinely interesting book videos if she was actually interested in the things she claims to be obsessed with. A booktuber I watch has a series where they read popular books from each decade in the twentieth century, and with each book they research the historical context behind it and why it was popular. It’s such a unique and cool idea and because its so well researched is a really interesting video series. Ruby could easily do something like that but is just copying what every other booktuber did a year ago.

Sorry for being off-topic, but could you please share the booktuber's channel? I'm a sucker for Modernism and I'd love to give that series a watch!

I never saw such a grim portion of pasta in my life, and I say this as someone who was regularly given something called ”macaroni gruel” as a child. (It’s elbow macaroni, basically boiled to death in milk, and fed to children lukewarm, without any seasoning or spices whatsoever.)

The percentage is even higher for Durham, UCL and Imperial. What’s your point? These are also top universities, it’s not surprising the students might be more likely to achieve higher results on average

But surely the better the uni is, the harder it is to get a first? Oxbridge (and Durham, UCL, Imperial, etc.) are likely to have good students, true, but they also hold their students to a higher standard. It seems to me that the percentage of firsts should be roughly the same at universities across the board as the difficulty of the degree and the ability of the students balance each other out. Getting into a ‘better’ university doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll automatically be awarded a higher class of degree; it’s not about the prestige of the university or even the quality of teaching, but the work you do as a student. Everybody within the same subject receives the same teaching but not everyone gets the same result; by your logic everyone at Oxbridge, once they’d been accepted, would breeze through and receive a first just because it’s a top university. I’m not an expert but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t work like that.

I say this as a current student at a non-Oxbridge Russell Group uni, so I do get why you’d be annoyed, but while obviously it’s nice to get into a top university it means nothing if you just expect to get a good mark on the basis of your uni’s ranking, which is based on the quality of research, teaching, etc. and not on the results of the students.

If a highly-regarded uni guaranteed a higher degree class, rankings would mean nothing and it would be just as easy to get into Oxbridge as anywhere else. It’s harder to get in because it’s harder to do well; the difficulty is relative to the ability of the students. Similarly, a lower-ranked uni is easier to get into and the workload is lighter, but the students‘ ability should match that level so the spread of results from third to first should be roughly the same as anywhere else.

To go back to the original point, I’m pretty sure it is easier to get a first than it used to be, and also to get into uni in the first place. Neither is a huge achievement any more. In 1994 7% of UK university students got a first, but 29% did in 2019. Obviously my generation isn’t more intelligent than previous generations - it must just be easier now. As it becomes more common it loses its value, so a first class degree, regardless of which university it’s from, isn’t going to be the thing on your CV which makes you stand out from other job applicants.

Ruby is missing out on the books that Enid Blyton apparently wrote whilst on crack, where some kids (two of whom are called Fanny and Dick) find a magic tree and make friends with a guy who has a giant head shaped like the moon.

First off, I have watched the film not read the book yet*
Are there wild differences between the two? The reason I'm asking is because the book seemed to be marketed as a great, tragic love story.

The film made me feel uncomfortable and your "predatory" description nails why. An underage gay teenager being seduced by an early to mid twenties aged man isn't a warm-hearted love story.

Ruby claimed to love the Netflix drama 'Heartstopper' but CMBYN is a world apart.

the book ups the uncomfortable-ness and creepiness i think but in a way that feels intentional by the author. it’s by no means supposed to be a cutesy love story. i can recommend lola sebastian’s youtube video on it, if you’re after a more in-depth analysis of the book and movie and the background to the production of the movie

I mean Stranger Things is quite explicitly inspired by Stephen King's books, particularly It. Like, it's not subtle lol anyone who's seen Stranger Things and has at least a vague idea of what It is about would recognize that.
I find it hilarious to imagine that she's never actually read 1984 and she's fully convinced it's set in the '80s (like, our '80s, not the dystopian 1984 Orwell imagined). I see no other reason to connect Stranger Things with 1984. And considering the weird way she's used 1984 quotes before it's quite obvious she's not familiar with it.

Exactly, there's a few different Stephen King books referenced in Stranger Things, so they would be the obvious choice as a recommendation. However, I really, really cannot imagine Rhubarb reading It. Or any Stephen King really.
