God yeah I remember the uni days when students would show their notes to the lecturer after class and would compliment their teaching. All of them were similar to Ruby, over-achieving and quite snooty to anyone who wasn't as outwardly interested in acadaymia. I remember her saying in an old video that she hated when students didn't pay attention in class at school and how she didn't understand why they weren't more motivated to get an education. She often seems quite narrow minded and doesn't consider others' experience and opinions towards education. So irritating!

I agree with earlier posts about Ruby's intelligence only being memory based. Having to study so hard for so long isn't necessary for people who are naturally intelligent or who acquire information effectively. Maybe she doesn't understand what is being taught and needs to do further research to understand it? Either way she's clearly keeping up this image/character that hides the fact she struggles like the rest of us mere mortals.

I think it's selfish too because she's taking the time away from others having the chance to contribute. She went to a small private school where she was Head Girl and got a lot of special attention and now that she's in university she doesn't seem to recognise that she's no longer special, she just wants the same treatment she got in school. Ugh writing 1000+ extra words for an essay is so pretentious. She needs a wake up call.

I feel, in regards to the academia aesthetic, she aligns so much more with light academia! She mentioned in her dark academia video (I think) that a book in that aesthetic was Little Women.... Little Women?!? When I think of dark academia I think of something more along the lines of Dorian Gray.

I don't want to get too uppity about something as abstract as an aesthetic but I have to agree. She doesn't have such a good grasp on the basics of what is considered as dark academia lol. She strikes me as light academia/cottagecore at most. I've never seen her interested in darker subjects, heavier books or classics (as in Greek and Latin classics.) Which is fine, nobody has to define themselves with a hashtag but just because you like rain and old buildings doesn't mean you're interested in a certain aesthetic. (I also low-key hate that the word aesthetic now means a bunch of collected pictures with a certain vibe but I have to roll with it lol.)

She definitely is not in that bracket. Her intelligence comes from lots of studying, it’s probably not entirely natural. And the IQ test includes lots of different areas of intelligence, so getting an A* in certain subjects probably isn’t a measure of high IQ, just hard work

I didn't do a humanities subject at uni. But I am certain that is not normal for university level. Feels like something you'd do in high school to get a laugh out of your classmates

My IQ is 118 and I hated school. My grades weren't great because of issues I won't disclose but I know I'm not stupid and could have done a lot better.

Oh Ruby. As a grown-up currently trying to hold onto my job in spite of my company undergoing massive changes, I can assure you not a single thing on my ”before year end” to-do list is going to go unchecked, Christmas or no Christmas. Doesn’t mean I’m stressed or unhappy, doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the little things, but shit has to get done when you’re an adult. It’s called... adulting. Try it sometime.

I signed up to this forum specifically to comment on the StudyTuber threads, and the obsession with Oxbridge.

I was rejected from 1 of Oxbridge (I won't say which one) at UG and at PG level. I took a year off, got an office job, and then I reapplied to a bunch of universities (got into 3/4), and ended up with a scholarship to the 'other' Oxbridge university. I'm now here and I genuinely don't understand the hype. It's all about the brand. The course doesn't feel particularly special, and there are a lot of pretentious people. I don't understand why Jack Edwards, for example, is essentially wasting a year of his life on the off chance that he might get into Oxford. I had absolutely stellar grades, topped my year, excellent work experience, and publications at UG, but I was still rejected from one of them. Lots of these YouTubers don't seem to have relevant work experience or the absolute best grades. At least with Ibz Mo, his work (and YouTube channel) was incredibly relevant to his PG course. I really prefer ones like Jake Wright or PaigeY who just seemed so much more normal and grounded.

Also, Ruby's work style is terrifying. You don't have to work that hard to get top grades, you have to work smart.

God that video is concerning...I hate reading all the comments from people (I'm guessing a lot of school age kids), going "wow this makes me feel so bad I can't concentrate for this long" - like, you shouldn't be working like this, don't aspire to it!! I always take one full day off per week at uni, and my uni (St Andrews) is one of the top unis in the UK. My degree is Classics and English, so fairly similar to Ruby's, and there is absolutely no way I do the amount of work she does, and I get high 2:1s and firsts in all my work. Now trust me, I'm definitely not a genius lmao, I just work sensibly and take proper breaks. Not only must this be terrible for Ruby, it's setting SUCH a bad example to the kids who watch her channel thinking this is how they should be working.

Ruby is a 20 year old woman that has led an incredibly sheltered life. I do like her but she is completely oblivious to what is going despite her claiming to know a lot.

Her parents have a part to play by not making her get a Saturday job when she turned 16 or making her pay rent when she began to earn an income. I understand that her parents don't need the extra income, evidently, but both of these things would have significantly helped her.

For instance, gave her life skills and people skills. Make her aware that things are expensive especially clothes and food.

Before anyone says anything, I had a privileged upbringing. Not to Ruby's extent but I went to a good school, never went without and lived in a large house. I would go on holiday often but nothing overly fancy but recognise my own privilege in all of these senses.

My dad practically forced me to get a job at 16 because he wanted to me understand how lucky I was and meet people from every background. He also wanted me to understand the value of money and stopped giving me an allowance. Obviously I was still fed and had a roof over my head.

I'm not trying to say what my dad did was right or wrong but it definitely moulded me into the person I am today.

I am grateful with what I have. I don't spend unnecessary amounts of money on clothes or food. My treat during the pandemic is a takeaway and I haven't bought any new clothes in months.

I live in a tier 3 area, we've been in restrictions a lot longer than everyone else in the UK and it's been horrendous. I've barely seen my parents or boyfriends family all year, and the same with my friends. I'm also on the frontline on low pay so my mental health has taken a battering.

Ruby is clueless to any of this because she's been cooped up at home in her own fantasy world.

I think Ruby will struggle if she has to move out or get a full time job. Both are likely as I doubt she'll be able to do YouTube forever. I feel like the obsession with being young again is her realising that she's not a child anymore and is scared of the real world.

I also noticed in Clare's blog posts she often refers to Ruby and Martha as kids, teens, children, young etc. Not in a way parents do when they say 'my kids' or 'our children'. She also referred to herself and her husband as 'the adults' in https://www.whatapalaver.co/post/day-seven. Perhaps Ruby's treated more like a child at home, which would explain how childlike she is. Her and Martha are both adults but Martha acts like a rebelling 13 year old and Ruby acts like an 8 year old living in a fantasy world. It's all very odd.

I’ve always thought her mum comes across as a bit ... strange, dressing up with Ruby in her videos and going to get a tattoo with Martha. She just seems to be reliving her youth through her kids and it’s no wonder there are maturity issues. Ruby’s home is beautiful but it just always seems so cluttered and chaotic, what my mum would call ‘middle-class mucky’. There’s always piles of stuff everywhere and you wonder who’s taking responsibility for being the adult in the house. I have major kitchen envy but whenever we see the fancy taps I just itch to go at them with the Cillit Bang!

Ahhh yess! I did wonder if it was the house with the extra word in the title, but there weren't any pictures to be nosey at. The weird triangle hedge would still be visible outside her window too as I think all the houses have that same connecting driveway .
Housing websites online do predict their £775 house would be work £1 mil now though so still a lot of money!

I doubt Ruby would last very long in the Victorian era. It's all nice to play pretend when you live in a big, beautiful house with a huge garden...

yup, I know for a fact if I was alive in the Victorian era I'd be some slave girl ahah, and the same can probably be said about a lot of her viewers. I think she got some criticism in the past for romanitcising this era from viewers of minority groups.

Lecturers appreciate when students show an awareness of how much they work, so Ruby is doing the exact opposite by taking up so much of their time. And as others have said, she's removing other people's opportunities who may not have grasped the work as well as she has. If I had been that lecturer, I would have insisted on her leaving the call after 15 minutes, let alone 40, unless it was a scheduled appointment (and even then, at my university appointments are typically 30 minutes).

When she said she'd written 2000 words for a 500 word essay... ffs Ruby learn from your past performance. You're just making more work for yourself - your argument which is spread over 2000 words is not going to read the same once it's cut down, so why not just aim for 500 words in the first place? Isn't that why you spend so much time planning, to write to the plan and stick to the word count? If I was her tutor, I'd get so exasperated with her. It's not impressive to waste time like this.

What do people think of Ruby promoting the same essay service as Jade? From my understanding they don’t write it for you but something about it just doesn’t seem right to me

I personally never encourage students to share their work with anyone apart from the lecturer/personal tutor/university study skills team. You can't truly know what the website will do with your submission, or if they store it in a way that makes you get flagged for plagiarism. It's better to be overly cautious about these things - although I do get why people may feel reluctant to talk to uni staff about their work for fear of looking stupid. It's just something you have to get over.

Sorry for the really bad highlighting skills but does Ruby not even consider that maybe not everyone has good memories of Christmas? I’m very fortunate to have been surrounded by love at Christmas but unfortunately my grandad died on Christmas Eve when I was a child and since then it’s not been as magical. I realise that’s a very small thing in comparison to others, I don’t think she realises that many people aren’t as fortunate to have grown up with ‘Christmas magic’.

This is tone deaf and shows privilege. Some people will have spent Christmas in hospital, going hungry, had no presents. I spent it being abused, so no Ruby, Christmas eve wasn't magic. It was about hiding and trying to not make any noise
