I honestly feel a bit sorry for Ruby - I don’t mean to white knight for her but I do think she’s a bit unfairly maligned. I’m not making any judgement here as to her actual level of intelligence but it’s a bit of a misconception to say that bright people don’t need to study hard. Of course you always get the odd super, super smart person who just understands and synthesises everything but everyone has a point where there need to work at something in order to achieve. It’s a real problem for bright kids and those who’ve been identified as ‘gifted’ when they start having to really work at school, especially if they’ve always found academia easy or they’ve been praised a lot for achieving without effort. Hence why you see a lot of ‘bright’ kids with poor qualifications. It can really hold people back, especially if they get to their late teens or adulthood without developing that discipline. Ruby doesn’t study smart and she’s at the extreme end of the spectrum, but nobody can achieve without studying at all - I do wonder if some of her fetishisation of studying is to give herself an excuse for needing to work at something. You do get the feeling that a lot of her identity in her family is tied up with being the smart, academic, well-behaved child.

I just watched her video and there's a bit where she talks about receiving these mouse plushies which... fine, I get that they may be sort of collectives? But then it shows her mom playing with the mouse and saying "we're gonna have hours of fun aren't we Ruby" and this just bugged me. I don't know what it is exactly but this statement seems like something a parent would say to an 8 year old, not a 20 year old woman. I very often have to remind myself that I am, in fact, younger than Ruby, because when I watch her videos I 100% feel like I am watching somebody younger than me.

I honestly cannot believe this girl, I don’t watch her really but she often appears on my recommended videos and the “students don’t get weekends” in her thumbnail caught my attention. sorry but I find the messages and lifestyle she portrays quite toxic tbh. I went to a red brick uni which is in the top 20 in the country, I graduated with a first and whilst at uni I was out with my friends all the time and worked a part time job about 20 hours a week. My friends did the same and we all got 2:1 or firsts and are now working in the careers we wanted or still in academia. No matter what she does, academia or a career she needs to be well rounded and not just someone who gets good grades, she needs people skills, resilience, team work. What are her career aspirations?

I studied hard for exams - maybe 7 hours a day in the week leading up to the exam and put effort it close to deadlines for essays etc, but didn’t work the way she does where she is constantly doing ridiculously long days of work, for what exactly?! Baffled, I’ve never known anyone like her. All I can guess is she isn’t as naturally intelligent as she makes out so needs to do this much work to keep up

I've been watching Ruby for a while but made an account specifically after watching this video. Lecturers do not want you to go out spending lots of money buying books for your course, or getting stressed if you can't find them. Chances are, if you message them they will be able to point you in the direction of an ebook in some obscure place, scan pages for you or sometimes even lend their own copy (although I'm guessing not now with Covid). I only started buying books for my course once I got onto postgrad study as I was narrowing in on my own area of research. She appears to be very hard on herself.

The 'students don't have weekends' comment in her thumbnail struck me as well - it should not be that way! My supervisor very strongly encourages me to have my weekends off, and my mental health really drops if I don't do this. She seems very caught on clocking up the hours she spends studying, and sometimes less is definitely more. It made me quite sad to her new video.

In case any of you are interested, another studytuber, tbhstudying, released a video last week addressing the things she doesn't like about the study community -- including 24x7 productivity, consumerism, elitism, and eurocentrism (+dark academia).

One of the comments under the video that made me chuckle: "one of my friends once said "dark academia is just for people who never really got over not getting a Hogwarts letter" and I've never thought about it the same way since"

I found the astrophysics comment hilarious. There’s a wild difference between an amateur interest in astronomy and being into astrophysics! My Dad wanted to be an astronomer when he was a kid, and he took his degree (maths) on the advice of an astrophysicist who told him to take “maths, maths and more maths” before moving towards astronomy. Though he didn’t go into astronomy then, since retirement he’s done a masters in astronomy with the Open University. The idea that an English student with no serious background in maths or physics is suddenly “into astrophysics” is absurd. It reminded me of a video a while back in which she mentioned she was doing Latin on Duolingo - she seems to pick random academic sounding subjects to say she’s knowledgeable about, when she blatantly doesn’t have any education in them.

Yeah I guess I just struggle with the fact nobody every calls Ruby out on anything problematic because they treat her like a child "oh shes just sheltered". But she's the same age as Kate Elisabeth, Unjaded Jade, Eve Bennett... She's older (!) Than Elena Handtrack and Lydia Violetta.

She is not a child. She is a fully grown adult. If she hadn't switched courses she would be graduating university this year. It wouldn't be unusual for someone her age to have their own children, for gods sake. We should hold her to the same standards we'd hold any other adult.

Thats a lie lol, Einstein had an IQ of 160, its ridiculously high. Those online tests are bullshit and tbh even if you do get it done professionally it means next to nothing anyway. Mine was tested when I had an assessment for autism when I was younger, and I scored 143 which is very high and I’m dumb af

Her latest IG post telling people that she hopes they'll have a 'grateful and kind' Christmas after the Tier 4 announcement the other day has irritated me. I think Hertfordshire is in Tier 4, but it's alright for her to tell people to be happy as she's already at home with the majority of her family around. Others will be spending Christmas unexpectedly alone this year (many of my friends are stuck in student accommodation alone and have no plans for Christmas), so I always feel like these kinds of posts come off as very tone-deaf, like saying: "I know I'm fine and will have a relatively normal Christmas, but I must look like I'm also thinking of the others who won't have as much fun as me".

Did she say she spent FOURTY MINUTES on a zoom call to one of her module lecturers? That is ridiculously excessive, especially for a second year module which is probably worth a tiny amount of her final degree. When I have zoom calls about my dissertation they're like 15 minutes max. What is she possibly talking for that long about? Does she not realize lecturers have a ridiculous amount of work to be doing and god knows how many other students, they don't have time to spend 40 minutes going over every single little thing about the module she wants to chat about. It's quite self centred really, I only email my lecturers when I really need to because I know how busy they are and what long hours they spend teaching and planning and marking.

I just find it ridiculous how now she comes up with, “oh I looove Astrophysics!”. Like, ok Ruby, you like looking at stars now, not too sure how you could have hidden that “passion” for so long... It seems like she just tries to reach out to as many viewers as possible while appearing aesthetically pleasing and interested in everything.

She's treating the seminars like they're some kind of competition. Having someone else say her idea and saying she got 'thrown off' cause she was a minute late? Thrown off what? It's not a test. She's not the teacher's pet anymore and she doesn't like it.

regarding the lists thing, i personally do the same and write reminders on my phone for the things that i need to do each day and then tick them off as i go along. usually they’re pretty normal stuff (actual reminders), but on the days where my mental health is a little wobbly i will include things like getting ready, making food, and ticking those off gives me a sense of accomplishment. i think ruby does the same - not in terms of mental health, but definitely feels validated by ticking things off her list.

Tbh her study schedule is actually kind of average - doing all the essays last minute on the weekend and procrastinating for the majority of the time.

It's just that for her procrastinating looks like making lists, setting up the table, writing and rewriting unnecessary amounts of notes, writing and reading more than necessary and so on. It's the same as doing literally anything else than what the actual task is, just here you can fool yourself that you're being productive and "academic".
