I loooove writing and highlighting in books, and I tend to just give away any books that I've marked because I know I won't make much money from them, but Ruby could easily suggest people use digital highlighting software and just download the books?? I don't know who said it but she 100% just makes videos for herself because any normal person would offer these kinds of tips

It’s also terrible for your eye sight to do this! You should have properly lit space if you’re reading or even watching tv

I agree with anyone saying she does not really read the books. I don’t understand why she has to pretend to be a bookworm though. I’m a bookworm, I love books and tend to get excited over them. My reviews reflect that too. Her reviews do not belong to a bookworm. She usually seems like she has no clue what the book is about. She never gets excited, gives details about a book. No one has to be a bookworm. I have many friends who do not read for pleasure but are doing great at their professions.

I'm kind of flabbergasted over the fact that she mentioned candles as an essential for studying. This just shows how incredibly out of touch with reality she truly is. Most universities, including her own, do not allow candles in rooms because of the fire hazard. Why on earth would she suggest such an object when it was one of the major things she complained about in the past when she was not able to burn candles? I feel like her quarantine time playing at home has turned her into a dunce and the realities of going to university while Covid is back on the rise is going to slap her in the face. Does anyone think she will actually last the semester at Uni, because I don't!

because she wants/desires to appear like a bookworm. Wants the role of 'the bookworm' being presented to her audience (and to herself) rather than actually living it. I always feel like her videos are somewhat self-gratuitous. It's as if she is vicariously living through them.

Not to worry, she doesn't use candles as a practical tool. They are just a decorative prop to her.

For all she did to try to tenuously explain using scented candles as an essential tool for psychologically tricking yourself into feeling productive, 99.9% of the time, Ruby only lights unscented candle tapers in brought daylight. She's a clown.

And I think it's very telling of who Ruby really is. Half her essentials are flimsy tricks to force herself to be motivated, focus her attention for more than a few minutes or even just stay awake. She's inherently lazy and is so naturally disinterested with studying that she has to come up with a weird system of psychological trickery to make herself do any of it, and her ED isn't going to help her stay awake, focused and attentive.

The concept of slow living is actually pretty cool: consume less (as in buying stuff, not a nod to EDs) and take a slower approach to life. By this it means eliminating busywork, and not packing your calendar with social events you feel obligated to do but aren't looking forward to.
Some of my slow living friends also say that giving back to your local community, and helping to nurture that sense of community is also part of the movement, but I'm not sure I've seen that represented as much on YT channels.

Side note: the slow living movement grew out of the slow food movement which started in Italy in the 80s as a reaction to fast food. Slow food just means trying to eat locally grown produce, and traditional dishes instead of fast food.

Ruby's interpretation of 'slow living' with her endless buying/ being gifted lots of new clothes, never-ending busywork, and emphasis on cramming in as many books she can 'read' in a year just for the sake of numbers really irks me. Those things all go against the slow living ethos.

exactly! Also, when moving/cleaning I give away a lot of the novels in my collection to local libraries/friends and give them a new life. Nobody will accept books which are written over like this, and she does that in her regular books as well, not only textbooks...While buying used books I get a lot of ones with notes written around in pencil, but usually in a way that doesnt go over the printed text, and you can either erease it or keep it, since writing in pencil is faint and doesn't disturb from reading much. What she does on the other hand, is just destroying those books in my opinion, they loose both their value and any aesthetics they may posses

Haha, luckily Amazon barely works in my country. I'll look up the brand though, thanks for the recommendation!

I used to be one of those people who were all precious about their books and thought writing in them was akin to sacrilege, but... it's just paper. It's the contents that are important, and if any kind of physical interaction with a book helps the owner have a better and more profound reading experience, then the book is serving its purpose no matter what it looks like. And unless you are intending from the start to pass the book on to someone else, it should be yours to do with as you please.

We all know Ruby would never donate that book anyway, it will sit on her bookshelf gathering dust until the next time she rearranges her room, so she might as well exercise some critical thinking and make some notes on it.

Thanks for the insight! I guess its just the shops&libraries that I've stumbled upon are very picky like this. I guess you are right though, it is only paper afterall. I do buy used books a lot too and I don't mind the traces of previous owners because I understand that this is what I'm going to get from a used book. I make notes in my books too, but I either do them in pencil or stick them in with sticky notes if its a longer annotation. Although I still can't bear using permanent pen and markers maybe I'll be a bit more understanding :') . And you are definitely right about Ruby, she's going to keep them all to stay faithful to her dustcore aesthetics.

But don't you know, candles are just so aesthetic !! Can't very well live out your fantasies of being a Victorian bookworm without them. Leafing through a book isn't the same without squinting through the flickering yellow light of a candle. Normal lights are so blasé.

When you have a taper (NOT a ”candlestick”) that doesn’t quite fit your candlestick (NOT ”candlestick holder”), you either 1) shave it down at the base if it’s too big or 2) drop some melted wax on the bottom of the candlestick if your candle is too small, and affix your taper to that so that it’s upright. What you DON’T do is put the taper in the candlestick loose at a 30° angle and position it near a curtain or other flammable material.

I guarantee you, if her landlady saw her candle setup, there would be no more live candles allowed at her uni accommodation.

That plant was literally just in a plant pot - no saucer or anything (and it was next to the TV, which will be fun when they water it …) Unless Blakeney took it home with her that poor plant will be deader than the dodo by now.

Ruby is living a very strange life. No doubt about it. It’s like this reverse Tory make believe Victorian poor scullery maid meets savy studytuber. Rake in the money, buy and rent a little cottage, sell books/study materials online but pretend you live a frugal poor book work life

I have to say the Kanken is remarkably comfortable. However she tries to carry too many heavy things like a laptop in it. She’s have been better off getting the laptop version which also has padded straps.

fjallraven do say the classic isn’t suitable to carry a laptop in all the time. The laptop one has a zippered padded laptop section and can support the weight better.

I’ve put my laptop in mine briefly to carry in the car; but I wouldn’t use it as a laptop rucksack at Uni with books etc aswell

I don't own a kanken so I don't know but the classic version looks a bit flimsy to carry a laptop, like it won't protect it very well from bumps and hits when you carry it around. I would also be worried about the straps ripping from too much weight.
