"slow living" (side-note can someone explain the concept of slow living to me, I've only heard it from Ruby and I just don't understand what it's about) bubble, and then there's the lying but even then.. idk, maybe it's all the twirling around in fields or something??
I'm honestly not 100% sure what it means either. I think it just means the opposite of "hustle culture" where you're being told you should spend all your time working, making profit and essentially being stressed out. Slow living I think means that you enjoy all aspects of life consciously, even when they're not productive. Typical things to do to "live slowly" are for example growing your own food, then making a dish out of them while enjoying the whole process and relaxing instead of just ordering takeout so that you have more time to work. That's what I imagine slow living should be like. I don't see it in Ruby. The scenes of her twirling in fields and "enjoying nature" seem much live slow living, but if you just do that to tick it off your to-do-list I guess that misses the point.

I reckon Ruby will only have 1 more year of Youtube left because I can’t see her being relatable after uni. She’ll probably keep her Instagram for aesthetic posts, probably reaching new followers there from time to time.
She will one day have to get a job.

the way she cuts her sentences/shots in the video is so irritating because it changes the intonation completely!!!!

Yet again I don't understand who this video is aimed at. Things like Notion and using your library are only really suitable for uni students (we were never allowed laptops in class at school, maybe that's normal in private schools though?). But a pencil case and folder are not gonna be used AT ALL by an English student at uni. I remember buying hundreds of folders before first year and I literally never used them because we don't get given loose paper. So is this video for a 15 year old about to do GCSEs, or a 21 year old about to start their dissertation?

She's unbelievably ignorant about her own privilege - '£120+ headphones are an absolute MUST!' So studying is only for the rich and nobody can succeed without spending a near fortune?

Things like food and water are not academic essentials. They're essential to staying alive. You should be consuming them every day regardless of if you're a student or not.

Pro-tip for broke ass students like me who cannot afford to spend €100+ on noise-cancelling headphones: if you look up brown noise or white noise videos on Youtube you can use your regular headphones as noise-cancelling headphones. I use brown noise videos to study in the same room as my parents watching TV and you can't hear a thing.

Just to throw out a different opinion, I'm an English student about to start on my PhD, and I used folders/my pencil case literally every day during my MLitt. I would store and organise my handwritten notes from seminars etc in folders/files, organised by module and week and put any relevant research/secondary reading in with the notes from that week's seminar.

I know lots of people do their notes digitally etc but I just can't take stuff in unless I'm actually writing it out by hand.

Looks like she might be on a camping trip with her family, so there probably won't be a video this week.

On the camping note: kinda wish she showed a bit more of that on YouTube to balance out the productivity/routine videos.
Never fear, I'm sure she has a compilation of old clips from the past few years she can stitch together with some mood music (most likely some Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky to get those Christmas vibes in summer) and ta da! No week missed! ;)
Or, a few clips of her twirling in a field for her cottagecore slow living vibes, also with some Nutcracker as background music. Easy-peasy!

Yeah this is such a shout! I do the same if I have to study round my noisy younger siblings. Why can’t she share useful advice like this instead of just ‘throw money at the problem’? Not everyone has endless money to throw Ruby🥲!

To be fair, I am a proper grown up with a responsible job and I still that myself to a new pencil case at this time of year - I have no permanent desk or locker at work so having a pencil case with the stuff I need it in makes sense. I also still handwrite most of my notes, I just can’t get on with digital note-taking systems and by handwriting a) I’m keeping up my handwriting skill and b) it actually helps me to remember things better than typing.

One thing that I have noticed about Ruby is the more I watch her videos.. she just seems more and more.. fictional. Like we all know she's basically living in her own dark-ACADAYYYMIA, cottagecore, "slow living" (side-note can someone explain the concept of slow living to me, I've only heard it from Ruby and I just don't understand what it's about) bubble, and then there's the lying but even then.. idk, maybe it's all the twirling around in fields or something??
The concept of slow living is actually pretty cool: consume less (as in buying stuff, not a nod to EDs) and take a slower approach to life. By this it means eliminating busywork, and not packing your calendar with social events you feel obligated to do but aren't looking forward to.
Some of my slow living friends also say that giving back to your local community, and helping to nurture that sense of community is also part of the movement, but I'm not sure I've seen that represented as much on YT channels.

Side note: the slow living movement grew out of the slow food movement which started in Italy in the 80s as a reaction to fast food. Slow food just means trying to eat locally grown produce, and traditional dishes instead of fast food.

Ruby's interpretation of 'slow living' with her endless buying/ being gifted lots of new clothes, never-ending busywork, and emphasis on cramming in as many books she can 'read' in a year just for the sake of numbers really irks me. Those things all go against the slow living ethos.

Hope this helps a bit!

This annoys me so much those books aren't cheap.
I donated my first year books to the university who gave them to someone that was struggling financially
There's no way they could do that if I had scribbled all over them
exactly! Also, when moving/cleaning I give away a lot of the novels in my collection to local libraries/friends and give them a new life. Nobody will accept books which are written over like this, and she does that in her regular books as well, not only textbooks...While buying used books I get a lot of ones with notes written around in pencil, but usually in a way that doesnt go over the printed text, and you can either erease it or keep it, since writing in pencil is faint and doesn't disturb from reading much. What she does on the other hand, is just destroying those books in my opinion, they loose both their value and any aesthetics they may posses

Also,I didn't know about that brown noise thing, thanks guys! This is such a helpful tip, why hasn't any studytuber shared it earlier... Oh right, they don't face the same struggles as regular people who are studying lmao

That’s totally fair, I think that one of the most important things to highlight if you’re giving study advice is: find out what works for you. If you learn best through physical notes that’s great, if you’re better off with digital that’s great too. But Ruby seems to think that you have to use EVERY method to do well, hence having notes on notion, kindle, in physical books, notebooks, planners etc. Maybe she should say “if you like online notes, x is good, alternatively y is great for people who prefer paper” rather than encouraging her followers to buy the entire stock of a stationery store, as well as apps and tech (spending double the amount of money and time necessary)

She has also said on multiple occasions to ”decide on one method of note-taking and stick with it” and then gone on to immediately contradict herself by showing herself using every imaginable method, app and notebook system 😂 She’s such a hot mess, I can’t believe anyone takes her advice.

I guess that's the takeaway here: Rubadubdub is incapable of thinking about anyone except herself and therefore any other way of doing things!

I watched her studying for the new term video and my only thought while watching it is 'wait... why so early?' and then her studying essentials I would hardly call many of these 'essentials' they are just things that helped her ngl. I love candles but I'd rather have my cozy lamp on when I'm doing my uni work late at night.

Hang on, is she actually suggesting people should use candles instead of electricity?? I love having a couple of scented candles around for the vibes, but I don’t use them as a light source…

Also totally off topic, but since we’re talking about note taking etc, I’m starting my masters in English in October and after a brief period of excitement the imposter syndrome is setting in. Anyone got any tips for note taking and keeping up with work at postgrad level? I have adhd and I’m slightly panicking at the amount of reading I’m going to have to keep up with lmao Ruby is clearly useless with advice but people here regularly have useful and intelligent things to say so any help would be welcome 😂

I bet she believes her notes are essential for the interpretation of the book and should be appreciated and considered as notes of a genius.

Don't worry, books like that aren't going to waste I promise! I buy them all the time in second-hand shops.

Just two weeks ago I found Dante's Inferno AND Purgatory in a charity shop that had somebody else's notes all over them plus part of the first page missing where the previous owner's name had been written on, and I was so excited! As a bonus, they were the editions with the hideous neon green and orange print on the cover and spine.

I cannot tell you how happy I was! They had the Italian and English side by side and there were lots of interesting remarks in the margins about the translation, biblical references, allusions to other texts, interpretations, grammar, mythology, the lot. That person must have really studied that text in some depth. I'd love to know how they ended up in that shop. Oh and they smell soooo good!

I realise this is probably an unusual/unpopular opinion, but I really like pre-owned books that show evidence of having been used and loved. Scribbles, dog-ears, cracked spines, coffee stains, the uglier the better. So just remember one person's trash really is someone else's treasure!

I used to be one of those people who were all precious about their books and thought writing in them was akin to sacrilege, but... it's just paper. It's the contents that are important, and if any kind of physical interaction with a book helps the owner have a better and more profound reading experience, then the book is serving its purpose no matter what it looks like. And unless you are intending from the start to pass the book on to someone else, it should be yours to do with as you please.

We all know Ruby would never donate that book anyway, it will sit on her bookshelf gathering dust until the next time she rearranges her room, so she might as well exercise some critical thinking and make some notes on it.
