The cult of productivity is linked to capitalist exploitation of human beings as good only for work. It's part of why being a workaholic is praised, especially in the US. People born after 1980 or so were pressured into unpaid internships as "job experience" - more and more requirements for being "worthy" of a paycheck were piled on. The problem is that these notions, the fetish of always being occupied with tasks, are entirely postmodern. The ancients had the idea of a required "rest" or "peace" for mental health and philosophical reflection (in Greek, this was called σχολή, and in Latin, otium; the Latin term is still used in certain contexts). I highly recommend looking at the wikipedia article if you are interested in the concept; it's much better than I expected! There is probably some work to be done in terms of connecting this intellectual, elite* notion of "fruitful rest" to other cultural or religious forms of retreat from daily life, meditation, and introspection.

Intellectual work requires time and rest and reflection. But moreover, I now know what burnout is. I admittedly never used to believe in it for myself - for others, sure. But I lost a parent and close family member within a couple months; then other traumatic things happened with a person I trusted as a mentor and with another person in my private life. Everything kept piling on top of me until I broke, and I stopped caring about anything at all. I used to always say yes, always take on new projects, but I found myself unable to perform. It was and still is an absolute nightmare, a horror beyond belief; I am still making my way out of this dark place. I never thought that could happen to me. But when you push yourself to the limit constantly, there is no room or leeway if something goes wrong. If something unexpected happens. Or maybe you can handle one bad surprise, but how about 5? How about a pandemic? A sick family member, a house fire, a demanding boss, insomnia, anxiety...? Eventually a person shuts down. Trust me, it is better to prevent this than to occupy your mind every second of every day. Furthermore, some of the best ideas are generated in those quiet times, or while doing repetitive, mindless daily tasks (shower thoughts). If you don't let your mind wander, you'll never discover hidden jewels in your own consciousness!

*freedom from work (paid or unpaid) is always connected with a kind of privilege, but that doesn't mean we as human beings need to explain or justify our own rest, our own otium. If we fall into the workaholic trap - even for the sake of argument, for the illusion of escaping our privilege ("I worked 3 jobs simultaneously and went to school and raised my siblings and volunteered with orphans...") - we strengthen the idea that a human being who works more is worth more. This is not true, but it is easy to slip into this line of argument even unconsciously.

I actually stopped watching Roobee for Molly. As somebody who has struggled with an eating disorder in the past, she approaches things very well, She also seems like so much of a well - rounded, happy person. I think she did the right thing by cutting Roobee off.

Unfortunately she very quickly U-turned when asked about potential drama between the two of them and was happily endorsing and enthusiastically encouraging people to watch Ruby's content even at her most problematic and triggering. I lost all respect for Molly the second she did that.

She is aware that encouraging people to study all day every day including holidays leads to such things as burnouts, right? 🙈

Is she based in the UK? I'm studying all day these days because I have an exam in September. It's fairly normal in my country to spend August studying because universities hold an exam session in September

First time poster, long time lurker 😉 found a (possibly dodgy) link to the video where Ruby says she has bought a house:
OK I have actually found the house online based on the clip of her standing in the kitchen in this video 😂 Obviously won't post a link or the address, but it's pretty easy to find if you Google "1 bedroom cottage Buckinghamshire", scroll down to about the 6th website on the results page (has an icon kind of like a red circle), it's currently advertised to rent for £1600 per month. You can easily identify the kitchen in the pictures 🙊 (delete if not appropriate)

Christ this is ridiculous. Honestly though aside from how utterly clueless Ruby is about the real world, the thing that strikes me is how different she is. Obviously she looks healthier, but hearing how positive and excited she is about moving out and feeling comfortable living on her own is just kinda sad when you look at her behaviour now. She really has regressed quite seriously.

£1600 per month for a 1 bedroom cottage? Blimey! Is that typical for the area? In my area, £600 is more like it!

Hmmm... can anyone remember how close she said the house she bought was to his family home? I may have found it (but I obviously won't post the address here). There's only one house that sold in her area within 6 months of her video which matches the architecture she showed, and it sold for over £500,000.
Sorry if anybody has said this; I’m just catching up. But I suppose it could have been a private sale? Friends/family/grandparents etc

Wow the amount of back pedalling in that video...all these quotes in less than a minute...
  1. "I'm mentally ready to move out"
  2. "I don't like the idea of never living at home again"
  3. "I'd rent it out a year after I finish uni"
  4. "Will have to see how it goes"
It doesn't seem to me like she was ever really committed to it.

omfg you can tell I'm northern £1600 a month over here would get you a 3 bedroomed dethatched house. If she's still renting it out she won't need to worry about income, weird it would be available though given she's had it for so long unless the lease has ended recently

Omg did she actually go with the angle that the house is like, a way for her to overcome her anxiety of being alone? It's ridiculous
Yeah, I don't get how throwing yourself in at the deep end (and spending loads of money in the process) is actually going to help.

I imagine the tenancy ended recently, and she's maybe put the price up since the last tenant left - similar 1 bed properties in the same area aren't as expensive as that, and some actually have more amenities (and parking!).

As annoying as she came across in that video, she did actually sound more intelligent and mature than she does now.

She was trying to seem more likeable and down to earth but it backfired egregiously because no normal person would buy a freaking house because they get jittery when they're home alone. It's like buying a plane and hiring a private pilot to get over your fear of flying. If anything this explanation makes her seem even more out of touch. She really did not need to make up an excuse about her mental health to justify her (or her parents') decision to invest in a rental property.

That reminds of Grace (Grackle on YouTube) who wanted to address her homesickness: she came up with a reasonable method by actually staying in a hotel or AirBnB for a night every so often. She didn't go and buy a house.
