I love this! As someone who did their MA Eng Lit Medical Humanities dissertation on The Children Act, after also studying Saturday, the cringe was very real when she mentioned it. I could kinda see where she was coming from as Fiona’s character is a successful judge and her personal relationship is under strain, the novel does intertwine those elements, but Fiona is already successful and the book covers one very, very complex case but predominantly the human relationships at the heart of it (Fiona cares for the boy and the boy cares for her in the wrong way then add in the husband etc) rather than Fiona trying desperately to gain all of the knowledge she can etc, she goes through the case as she would any other really - basically, if Ruby could explain her individual interpretation and focus on those elements that do fit then fine each to their own interpret it how you want, but you can’t deny that the majority of the book, especially for the standard average reader, would by no means scream dark academia as others would

Sorry to not be on topic with what you are all talking about, I've been away from Ruby for a few days, also I'm extremely drunk (I know ruby would hate me for even touching alcohol when it's not "a special occasion) " so I hope this makes sense ,I guess i'll find out later but I just want to say how thankful I am for these threads. If it weren't for you guys I honestly would had noticed so many things pointed out in these threads and would of thought of her how I did before, a nice, although a bit weird extremely orgranised and smart girl. There is s many things I'd never notice until people here pointed it out. I admit some things a bit nitpicky but other things disgust me, not just with her but how I didn't notice it myself before.

Confused millenial here. I thought dark academia means reading a lot/being interested in the classics (both music and literature). Or is it a literary genre of its own?
I don't think it's a genre but it is like a recognizable "vibe" that books have lol I don't really know how to explain it. Like you could describe a book as dark academia but I don't think it could be considered a genre. The setting, themes and general tone make it dark academia

What she means is that people began wondering why she just never mentioned SoA again and questioning why she didn't like it and didn't want to be seen as the odd one out that doesn't like a popular book. I thought she wasn't like other girls, what happened there?

Yup this is the sort of thing that makes me wonder if she’s been reading the thread lol after the bookcase tour went up we all pointed out that it’s obvious she just doesn’t like the book. Lo and behold suddenly she’s letting everyone know that she’s enjoying it!
lol She is so phony with everything she does. One minute she doesn't like a book, the next she loves it and will hype it up for the next month. A year from now she will be trashing it again, saying it was too deep for her, or it lost her attention, or she lacked enough knowledge about Greek mythology to connect with it. Yada yada yada. She is probably reading other people's reviews and summaries and smashing them all together to make her next story or vlog on what a fabulous book it is and how special she feels that she is one of the crowd that has read it and how a few years ago she, sniff-sniff, didn't feel worthy to read the cool books. Yeah, Ruby. We know you better than you know yourself.
It’s an “aesthetic.” Like how y2k is considered an aesthetic now. Dark academia does revolve around literary stuff though.

loads of booktubers will say "this book has a dark academia vibe' nowadays! reading books such as song of achillies and the secret history fit into the vibe/aesthetic!
I think dark academia books are almost always set in an academic setting like a school, a boarding school or university. They often have themes of like decadence, moral corruption, stuff like that. Usually they also feature murder and drug/alcohol use and the characters are tormented academics or scholars or artists. Like, think Dorian Grey but YA contemporary lolWould something like this have a dark academia vibe? Sorry for so many questions, I'm very curious about this whole dark academia thing

Seriously, this has become one of those things that literally makes my teeth itch every time she says it.
omg I am laughing so hard over her "candlestick box"! Candle box, you freaking idiot! And why are you acting like a lightbulb just went off? For someone who is so into antiques and old fashioned living, she doesn't even know what a candle box is? Come to my area...we all have them in our homes. The majority of them are mounted on the wall so mice won't get inside and eat the candles, because candles were so precious back then. Lots of companies make replicas, but if you want an original in good condition, get ready to dish out a couple of hundred bucks. So, suddenly she is an expert at Victorian information and antiques? All she could say was incorrect information from the start. lol

They are all walking around in shorts and tank tops. She tosses on layers of clothes and wears her boring hair straight down.

I think someone has mentioned before that it could be an ED thing but to be honest the weather is VERY changeable in the UK and August has been a bit of a disappointment for people who like summer, much cooler than usual.
Ok. I will make a very bold statement. Whoever would say SoA has a Dark Academia vibe is actually perpetuating the purely superficial idea of „academia“. It‘s like claiming you are into classical music but are listening only to Pop - because some use classical motives or even melodies in the background.
SoA is basically fanfic exploring a same sex variation of an already written story. I am not bashing fanfic here. There is a reason it’s out there and many enjoy it. Some are very original and good. SoA is not. It’s pretty basic in its pursuit of telling „another version of the events“. Circe is a much much better attempt. But I cannot get over using a completely build world for your success. It severely lacks in originality. And that’s all the author has shown for now. That’s what distinguishes a good author from a brilliant one. It will make her money but it will not put her on the classics shelf. Which is fine, but I really don’t get how a pretty elitist subculture (the whole classic/Arts/history/philosophy/Oxbridge culture is feeding on elitist ideas. I don’t dislike it but I get why someone would) would think that’s part of the canon or a good example?
If someone is truly into the academic aspect they would definitely read the real classic version. There are many well done translations that are actually pretty easy to read.
Ruby just jumped on the train. I think she either dismissed it and got backlash or underestimated its success and tries to appear relevant because it’s hyped so much. I doubt she has read it nor will she.
I also think there quite a difference between rl Ruby and yt Ruby. She most definitely plays Ruby Granger up at this point. I also think she is not reading all those books- she is an English Lit - working on her degree. She probably has not that much time for private reading fun. Even Ruby is probably not reading 20+h per day and if she is I think she would read on topic.

I do wonder if she may be using loose cuts and long sleeves to hide weight loss or lanugo. I don't know how low of a weight you need to get to for lanugo to start forming, and it has been nippy the last few days, but it's a possibility.
