I do wonder if she may be using loose cuts and long sleeves to hide weight loss or lanugo. I don't know how low of a weight you need to get to for lanugo to start forming, and it has been nippy the last few days, but it's a possibility.
Usually really rather low (emaciation). But there are always exceptions, of course.

What she means is that people began wondering why she just never mentioned SoA again and questioning why she didn't like it and didn't want to be seen as the odd one out that doesn't like a popular book. I thought she wasn't like other girls, what happened there?
Yup, she doesn't like reading and hates most popular books as they contain grown-up themes and ideas and require more thought and concentration. But being a bookworm is part of her manufactured personality and she craves praise and acknowledgement at all times, so she has to like all the books other people do. "I'm not like other girls" is just the "I based my entire personality on other girls" catchphrase for her.

As daft as it is, people won't disagree with you faster on the internet than if you say you don't like or aren't interested in their favourite things, even if you have constructive and rational reasons. "I never had an Ancient Greece phase when I was younger like everyone did" is a very stupid reason - I can see logic in wanting to familiarise yourself with Greek myths to better enjoy a novel deeply rooted in them, but like everything, she explains herself in a completely alien way. She would've gotten a tonne of comments/DMs about not reading the book after that last video and has now instantly U-turned. She still won't read it. She'll revert to her usual tactic of lying about reading it, give it vague praise based on the cover blurb, give it 5 stars on Goodreads and never speak of it again.

It's also very telling when saying she never finished The Secret History (I highly doubt she ever started) in that last video. She couldn't say, "I tried this after seeing tonnes of hype, but I just couldn't get into it - it's just not for me". It had to be: "This is one of the best books I've ever read and I couldn't put it down! But I quickly put it down and didn't read it." She says she was scared she wasn't reading it at the right time. You mean during your months on the dark academia bandwagon wasn't the right time to read a hallmark dark academia book, Ruby?

But she also has to stop herself from saying "I wanted to be reading it at the same time" - presumably as other people. She wants to be deep in the zeitgeist, riding the wave of newly-discovered things. But like everything, she's always three steps behind on every trend, so it becomes harder to force herself to like these things because everyone else has talked about them and moved on already and she's not part of the conversation (not that she'd have anything insightful to say). But she also has no interests or ideas of her own, so she'll always be stuck in that loop - never a trendsetter, but too culturally unaware to be part of the trends while they're still new and relevant.

I am glad she is admitting to this- but I think it just shows the worrying extent to her obsession with productivity 😣

It also, in my opinion, makes so many of her older videos quite dangerous, as her followers will watch them and think that is “normal.” When it obviously has no balance and is plain UNHEALTHY. The fact she even feels like trips out to a garden centre are “Unproductive”!?

Fact: ANY LIFE EXPERIENCE can be productive if you make it. For someone who talks so much about mental health and well-being and slow living, does she not realise how essential such things are for that? That you cannot be doing work all the time if you want to have any semblance of peace and fulfilment inyour life and stay grounded.

Slow living and productivity (Aka hustle culture) are essentially two ends of a spectrum! I feel like she is trying to live two completely seperate lives and be all things to all people, no wonder she has so little sense of self. If I wasn’t so angry at the potential dancer this poses to her audience, I would just feel incredibly sorry for her. I feel like she’s just so lost within herself and I do genuinely worry how she will cope with her final year 😣

Unfortunately this is another thing she pays lip service to every now and then (presumably due to an influx of negative comments that she's deleted) but never actually sticks to.

Every few months she'll mention that she took a day to relax and it's important to do so, since not everything day or activity needs to be productive. But then she immediately returns to the compulsive grind of Notion lists, routines and endless, redundant studying and encouraging toxic "productivity".

this is so funny to me like all she had to do is turn the bottle around so the word HONEY wouldn’t be so incriminatingly on display

"This was not my matcha, I just coincidentally happened to take the photo just as a passer-by placed their matcha down next to my muffin, and then my camera stopped working so I couldn't retake the photo. 🙈😂

I always make sure to order the super-ultra-mega-vegan matcha and on the way home, I rehomed six displaced beehives and stopped off at the bank to co-sign a loan for a local family of badgers so that they can start their own bakery business. 🦡🐝"

she genuinely needs to just get COMPLETELY off the internet for a good 6 months and try and figure it out. ruby isn't a teen anymore but her personality is obviously shaped by only internet subcultures (like many of us are, some more a bigger extent like ruby). i believe a lot of teens would be really confused atm due to all these "aesthetics" etc etc. as i said, everyone is shaped by the things we enjoy such as music, movies, etc) but for people like ruby i think the internet can be too much and very confusing as they try to fit in to these specifics so much but in turn it's confusing her snd she can't figure out what she really enjoys and who she is...

(sorry if this doesn't make sense, i'm on my phone, i just woke up and i'm hungry lol)

"Aesthetic bookshelf tour" AKA watch me superficially judge my books by their covers and show you the pretty pictures, don't expect me to dive any deeper into themes/ literary devices or even give a quick one sentence blurb of every book I've obviously definitely read because I'm a bOoKWOrM!! And I already labelled it "aesthetic" so you aren't allowed to bully me on the lack of depth!!

Jack Edwards is not my fave but you can't deny the difference between their book tours, it's night and day. One actually sounds well-read, intelligent, literature-educated. And no, it's not you, Ruby.

She recounts her teachers giving her their books instead of her thoughts on the book itself. I think that just reveals everything she values- praise and validation over actual learning.

Also I grew up in the East and was never exposed to the ancient Greeks yet was able to appreciate the Song of Achilles anyway. Like any other reader, I used context clues, deduction, comprehension, and logic to piece the puzzle together. Meanwhile Ruby has to do extra rEsEaRcH and still can't get through it. I'm confused, is she not willing to LEARN new things from the book? Isn't that what reading is about?? Or is she scared to use her own analytical/ reading skills...?

(Sorry for the scattered and spammy thoughts, I'm typing as I watch. Don't judge, I'm bored and stuck inside because of a heat wave :cautious:).

After every book video I always come out of it with a few new book recommendations to add on my Goodreads. But Ruby has somehow turned me off every single book on her bookshelf. "Dickens' Sketches by Boz gives you a tour of London before...reading his other books". A* explanation right there.

The most excited she sounded was when she picked up Jade's book. Which she hasn't even read yet. Ok then.

I'm sorry, that is the most disgusting "candlestick holder" I've ever seen.

At least it matches her nails.

OT but I've always thought it bizarre that Ruby said (used to say?) her favourite word was 'productivity'. How sad do you have to be to pick what is effectively corporate jargon from thousands of beautiful English words? And for someone who supposedly reads as much as she does

And she said her favourite quote from any book ever is "I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers" - the kind of meaningless platitude you'd find in a cheap greeting card, not a witty, meaningful or memorable line of prose. She's an indescribable dimwit.

to be fair, i know many vegans who also eat honey.
Far from me to gatekeep the label vegan because I don't care but she does also wear pearls and leather goods. Honestly I see this as just another label that she unauthentically pretends to embody (like bookworm, slow living, productivity, dark academia, cottagecore or whatever the duck she's playing dress up as these days)

Then they eat a plant based diet and are not vegan!

and I don’t believe Ruby is vegan either. Maybe she mostly follows a plant based diet but her many other ways of living (in make believe world) are not vegan!

Personally when I was trying to recover from an ED, I stopped being vegan - very gradually, like having honey and non-vegan stuff out if there wasn't a vegan option - because it was just another way to restrict, so I am kinda hopeful that she's doing that

I agree - I really doubt she has lanugo, itgrows to keep the body warm at a low weight and although Ruby has lost weight she isn’t actually at a low weight, just low relative to her previous weight. She could still be feeling cold, I think that comes no matter your weight when you have been restricting for a while, as your metabolism slows down.
Another possibility to consider (although less likely) is self harm. I think if she is starting to self harm in that way though she would do it in a less obvious place to protect her YouTube career. Just a thought.

Tbh I think it's better to have mostly plant-based diet and have a spoon of honey once in a while as an exception rather than thinking that you are either a 1000% vegan or eat everything. Even if someone has 1 vegan meal a day, it helps reduce the harm. Imagine if everyone did this!

Some peope do not go vegan 100%, but are like 99% or even 90% vegan with some little exceptions, and having many such people is more helpful for the environment than having this all or nothing thinking. So I think it's fine if she's not a "perfect" vegan, it's still a good example and encourages people to make better choices.

Also it's much better than throwing food away because it's not 100% vegan like Jade did when she was given food in quarantine.

edit: I should have used plant-based instead of vegan, but you get the idea!;)

I've been vegan for many years and "can vegans eat honey" is a huge argument that comes up every few months, to the point most groups outright ban the topic.

Other ones that come up are backyard eggs, and oysters. Oh and "is wearing/using things like leather okay if you had it before you were vegan or bought it second hand/was given it as a gift?"

Agreed! People (mostly vegans) on the internet can often be really critical of 90-something% "vegans" ("So you're okay with animal abuse, just 2% of the time???"). Which is understandable, because there are also people expecting vegan praise for their baby steps, like "meatfree mondays" or "pesco-ovo-vegan 3 days a week".

Regardless of that, I don't think we should be too harsh on Ruby's "vegan slip-ups", assuming she is trying to recover from an ED which could be intertwined with the whole vegan thing as well. Like, ordering something with honey in it instead of ordering nothing at all may be a 'good sign' in that sense.

I just hope she doesn't say something like this when people inevitably point it out, lol.
