I tried to start watching the new upload but the bit at the beginning, where Ruby’s doing dramatic reading again over the noise of what sounds like builders did my head in. Did she really watch that back and think ‘well done me, another fine video to upload’?

It feels a little weird to see this 21-year-old last-year uni student title videos "things to do before back to school"

Just skipped through Ruby’s aesthetic bookshelf whatever tour and noticed that she once more pushed "The Overachievers" as one of her absolute favourite books, best she ever read, such an interesting look into the education system etc. Has anyone else here read that book? Because I did, when I was younger and more stupid and thought Ruby wouldn’t recommend it so highly if it wasn’t good.

And that book is so superficial, repetitive and shallow. Like, yes, some parts in between are interesting because they give an insight into other peoples lives. But there is so little depth to it. Which is fine! not everyone wants to read highly researched takes on what the education system does to people’s youth. But if you have the slightest interest in this area, "The Overachievers" is just the same old basic ideas about overscheduled kids and the evils of overly selective colleges rehashed over and over. The message is basically "Getting into Harvard isn’t all that great anyway, look at Frank here whose mental health totally suffered, and all the really smart people choose to schools that fit their personality regardless of the school names prestige". I truly did not understand how Ruby "I obsessively research everything I’m interested in" Granger could seriously perceive this book as one of the most insightful and best pieces of nonfiction ever.

Of course, it turned out that persona is fake and Ruby is exactly as deep as "The Overachievers", so it all makes sense after all. But seriously. "My favourite book ever is The Overachievers!" perfectly encapsulates Ruby.

I read it in January and while I enjoyed, it was mainly due to nostalgia. It’s repetitive, self-indulgent and shallow, and I’m guessing it has an appeal for Ruby because she likes to imagine she, too, was an overachiever in school. (As I do lol)

Roobee’s list of fave books speaks volumes about the kind of person she is, and how that person is nowhere near the image she tries to project.

I do wonder, why make it public if she knows that some people from the internet ('bullies') know how to find her Spotify profile - does she want to tell people that she's in recovery, but not address it anywhere else?

yeah, it's one of those things that if you were incredibly pretentious about grammar and syntax wouldn't use, but is still spoken and written in everyday English which is totally fine as you can still derive meaning from the sentence/phrase easily (i wouldn't use 'very favourite' as it just sone awkward to me but i definitely say 'most favourite')! i THINK the correct way to say it is "this is my absolute favourite' (pls don't come for me if it isn't, i have had a long day at work). but to get to the point of my comment, i was just again pulling ruby's leg as she acts like she's an academic connoisseur but makes mistake such as these (which are completely fine to make as they are used in everyday english)!

it’s like when someone asks me to make something my “top priority” at work. Like, you can only have one priority if you think about the word but I’m also pedantic as fu*k.
If everything is a priority only one thing at a time gets done lol

Glad she told us that timers are good for setting timers and she use's her watch to tell the time, I wasn't actually aware time existed before this video. Everyday is a school day

Also I know it has been bought up a bit (mostly to do with the weightloss) and I know she says she regrets it a bit now but I really don't understand how teachers while Ruby was at school nor Ruby's parents did not do anything about her obsessiveness in studying and being productive. I know for me I had a time where I was very, very similar to Ruby, and teachers were warning my parents just from what I was doing at school, and it wasn't like I had a Youtube channel with thousands of subscribers documenting what I was doing (or claim to be doing) at home as well.
Maybe they did try, but from she has described it it honestly seems like they just let her study and obsess over doing as much as she possibly can each day for unhealthy hours on end.

Had a nosy at the blog. She self published a book of poetry on "Freedom Day", and blogged about that. One of the poems is called, "Two Daughters". Unsurprisingly it's about Ruby and Marfa. It's a bit twee but could still give Ermit'smenthol a run for its money.

At school I had a friend who went through an eating disorder, she would never engage with the topic if we brought up genuine concern, offered her some support, but she would make a performance of binning her sandwiches every day infront of friends, as if to gain attention but then shut us down when we'd offer her our food or offered her concern. She simply would not discuss it but made sure we saw she wasn't eating (at school at least). Ruby's behaviour online reminds me of that, the playlist, the triggering photos, yet never addressing the concerns.
I really hope she does get help because she's clearly in need of support.

That's really interesting. A mix of wanting to 'boast' (for want of a better word) about it, but also not wanting to be challenged about it.

Guys I'm confused...
Why is she making excuses for not reading The Song of Achilles? She did say in her IG story that she doesn't like it, doesn't understand the hype around it. And now she says she would love to read it but didn't have a Greek phase?? Did you not have to read the Greek Mythology? It's the basis for human nature is it not?
Fair enough if she started to read it but didn't like it, I was not a fan either. But why say she'd love to read it when she doesn't, and did state this earlier. Maybe she git IG backlash, who knows...

She showed herself reading it but as far as I can recall, she never said a thing about not liking it or not understanding the hype, maybe you’re thinking of someone else? (Or my brain is shot, which may also be the case.)

It's definitely a niche topic, but I would be interested in seeing what she says about it. Although, if it's just a mumble-jumble of misused words I won't waste my time. Do undergrad dissertations get made public at all? (Apologies, not very familiar with how these things work, I'm a while away from it!)

Wait so is Otto Lola and they changed her name? I didn’t think Lola was that young? Her and Margot always look either the same age or as if they got them around the same time so I never questioned it

I think they change Ottoline’s name to Lola, I seem to remember that they got the puppy and then changed her name not long after they got her. I’m assuming as she’s a pedigree she maybe came with a Kennel Club name and they changed it to something more usable.

Very off topic but I’m sorry the fact she gave The Five a 3*…. I’m the first to defend 3* reviews and not being negative reviews, and I know opinions are subjective, but to do it in the same breath as saying it’s an important “narrative”, Ruby it’s a historical account of the LIVES of the women, anyone who didn’t profess to be a high first class English literature student aiming to go into the publishing industry could get away with conflating that maybe, but if that’s what you’re building your online presence on, and possible future career, you really can’t especially not when it comes to a book as important as The Five - and she even says the research is incredible when that’s literally the entire book, so why the rating Ruby? Sorry needed the rant

It's just my opinion, but I wouldn't trust anyone who gives The Five a lukewarm 3* review! It's a masterpiece (and I don't give 5* reviews lightly)!

I went back and rewatched that bit, my brain must have corrected the grammar automatically. How can someone who reads so much not know its could have.

I haven't studied English in Uni, but even conversationally I wouldn't make that mistake.

I think even the cardigan could look alright if she just styled it more like a person her age. Tucking the green top into some high-waisted pants would make a significant difference imo.

I’m a fan of a big cardigan, but it’s definitely how you style it. My autumn/winter go-to outfit is high waisted, tapered trousers (usually checkered), with a t-shirt or thin funnel neck tucked in, then an oversized cardigan on top.

Obviously no one needs to follow trends, worth isn’t defined by style, yada yada. But surely if you’re posting an OOTD it’s because you either really love the outfit/how you look, or because you believe people will be interested in your style? It’s not cottagecore or dark/light academia, and I’m not convinced it’s option 1 either!
