Yeah, she clearly has no interest, no understanding and did no research into dark academia when she latched onto it as a fad.

Her entire criteria for a book or film qualifying as dark academia is: "It has a school in it, or one of the characters is a workaholic."

Like, she offers up The Children Act as one of the best examples of dark academia she could think of, because it contains a "pursuit of knowledge". I haven't read or watched it (and I doubt Ruby has, either), but from everything I can see, it's a standard legal thriller/drama. Is every John Grisham book dark academia now? Every police procedural?

Must remember to watch that classic dark academia series later: Law & Order.

I love this! As someone who did their MA Eng Lit Medical Humanities dissertation on The Children Act, after also studying Saturday, the cringe was very real when she mentioned it. I could kinda see where she was coming from as Fiona’s character is a successful judge and her personal relationship is under strain, the novel does intertwine those elements, but Fiona is already successful and the book covers one very, very complex case but predominantly the human relationships at the heart of it (Fiona cares for the boy and the boy cares for her in the wrong way then add in the husband etc) rather than Fiona trying desperately to gain all of the knowledge she can etc, she goes through the case as she would any other really - basically, if Ruby could explain her individual interpretation and focus on those elements that do fit then fine each to their own interpret it how you want, but you can’t deny that the majority of the book, especially for the standard average reader, would by no means scream dark academia as others would

(Catching up so sorry for the probable incoming double post as I'm still only on p 26 lol)

What is super frustrating is how EASILY Ruby COULD have made the title (or even basis) of that dissertation into a viable, Literature-centred piece of work. Christmas was undoubtedly a huge phenomenon within the Nineteenth Century and 19th C lit- 'Twas the Night Before Christmas was published in 1823, after all.

She could focus on:

1. How Christmas traditions were established through popular fiction or poetry in 19th Century Anglo-American Lit
2. The Victorian Christmas ghost story tradition
3. Victorian Children's poetry and Christmas
4. Christmas-themed periodicals and how they promoted various ideas between the classes

Like this is such a short and rushed list because I'm tired and it's a bad MH day but C'MON RUBY IT WOULD BE SO EASY ARAOIJFAOFASOIFDJASFO

As Ruby reads here, let's see if she takes any of your ideas!

What gets me though is that she has given a book 2 stars, but doesn’t seem to have given any written review? I’d love to see why she gave it what she did!

Completely agree with this, everyone's taste in literature is different! Ruby only writes reviews for a small proportion of the books she rates, but it'd be interesting to see what makes her like or dislike these books.

I think courgette oats are a classic ED food, I follow a few people who are recovered and they talk about how unhealthy that was for them

No it's not. It's ranging from 19 to 23°C most days this month. She either feels the cold or wishes it was a more aesthetic season already.

I went to boarding school and saw the suitcase room many times. Not a single person out of a boarding house of around 50-70 (I was there from the age of 11-18 and the numbers varied greatly year to year funnily enough the suitcase I brought at the beginning of those years fell apart when I was starting my final term I used it but threw it away after finishing so it truly was my boarding school suitcase spending most of its long life in the school suitcase storage area) brought trunks everyone had normal suitcases. and ruby if you're reading this its nothing like the enid blyton stories

I think that's the trouble with casual magic and telling people to love and appreciate every little thing: it's ridiculously unrealistic and toxic.

If I stub my toe, my first thought isn't going to be "Ooh I'm so amazed by how sturdy and solid that table leg is", I'm going to be internally cussing and feeling pain. There isn't anything positive about it, and not being able to see the negative in situations (i.e. the balance of life) isn't a good thing.

but that's not what it is saying, is it? i never saw anyone saying this, that they have to love EVERY little thing? like you stubbed your toe and it hurts and that sucks, but maybe you saw a beautiful sunset ten minutes later and then that is your "casual magic" moment of the day

hey a fellow aussie!!!!! the australian housing market is absolutely stuffed. my parents bought our house in 1999, the price is now 8x (last time we got in valued about 2 years ago) the original price....

on the topic of moving out in your 20s, i don't think i know anyone my age (24) who doesn't want to move out? i moved out the start of this year and god it was so scary but the experience and independence you gain is amazing! becoming an adult and doing adult things is and can be really daunting but it is just a part of life, you will have to get on with it one day!!! yeah you still struggle, cry, get confused and overwhelmed etc but it will be ok! (yes, this is very simplified and every situation is different but i know you guys understand me lol)

Personally I don't think she was ever very attached to either of their dogs. I remember the first time she showed herself interacting with the dogs on one of her videos and they seemed to keep their distance from her and didn't even wag their tails. It is pretty obvious she mostly ignored them and only got into walking/playing with them to copy Holly. Spending time with pets probably wasn't productive enough for her. I am sad for the dog, but really not going to get ridiculous about it. I didn't know it, I don't know the family, I have no association with their dogs, and her sad stance is performative, like everything else about her. At this point I distrust her on every level. I don't see why her viewers are so blind to all of this.

She never talks about truly important world events. No mentions of Haiti, Afghanistan, no mention of the gymnastics during the Olympics, regardless of those famous twins. She didn't mention the teams once during it and it ended over a week ago. For someone who reads the news headlines daily, I am surprised she never brings any awareness to her platform. This just is another example of her living in her bubble and disinterest in others, situations in the world, and only occasionally pick and chooses ones that may fit her "aesthetic" mood of the day. She never looks beyond her own stuck up nose. She is so self-centered and self-absorbed. She really has no feelings for others, but cries bully at every negative comment or scribbles down notes for any person who is remotely kind to her, and judges everyone! Her perspective on life is so twisted.

That is true, she never shows any interest for anything happening outside of her parents' garden unless they're paying her to promote something (Holocaust ad anyone?)

The name Capote is of Cuban origin so it should technically be pronounced Ca-poh-tay (I think) and in any case the Americanised version would be Ca-poh-tee which is also the pronounciation that Wikipedia reports

Nobody will accept books which are written over like this, and she does that in her regular books as well, not only textbooks...While buying used books I get a lot of ones with notes written around in pencil, but usually in a way that doesnt go over the printed text, and you can either erease it or keep it, since writing in pencil is faint and doesn't disturb from reading much. What she does on the other hand, is just destroying those books in my opinion, they loose both their value and any aesthetics they may posses

I bet she believes her notes are essential for the interpretation of the book and should be appreciated and considered as notes of a genius.

I think it's that she never gets bothered by anything. It would make her so much more relatable to say "I was caught out in the rain, and it was annoying" as opposed to pretending she loves everything that happens.

This! Also it was always very visible she's not very close with the dogs. Didn't she admit herself she wasn't close with them? Using poor dog's death as a reason why her channel sucks is disrespectful to the poor pup. And ofc it's an extremely sad thing for the family but as we've seen she wasn't that close with them anyway. When I lost my cat after 15 years and being basically raised with him I had depression but we were super close - playing everyday, he would sit on my laps when I did homework, sleep in my bed during the night. Ruby would only ever open the gate / door for them ffs and barely mention them in overall - except for including her extremely awkward interactions with them for aesthetic shots...

She also got some of the best IG interaction she's had in years (or ever?) from her post about it. 700+ comments when I last looked.
