What she means is that people began wondering why she just never mentioned SoA again and questioning why she didn't like it and didn't want to be seen as the odd one out that doesn't like a popular book. I thought she wasn't like other girls, what happened there?

Yup, she doesn't like reading and hates most popular books as they contain grown-up themes and ideas and require more thought and concentration. But being a bookworm is part of her manufactured personality and she craves praise and acknowledgement at all times, so she has to like all the books other people do. "I'm not like other girls" is just the "I based my entire personality on other girls" catchphrase for her.

As daft as it is, people won't disagree with you faster on the internet than if you say you don't like or aren't interested in their favourite things, even if you have constructive and rational reasons. "I never had an Ancient Greece phase when I was younger like everyone did" is a very stupid reason - I can see logic in wanting to familiarise yourself with Greek myths to better enjoy a novel deeply rooted in them, but like everything, she explains herself in a completely alien way. She would've gotten a tonne of comments/DMs about not reading the book after that last video and has now instantly U-turned. She still won't read it. She'll revert to her usual tactic of lying about reading it, give it vague praise based on the cover blurb, give it 5 stars on Goodreads and never speak of it again.

It's also very telling when saying she never finished The Secret History (I highly doubt she ever started) in that last video. She couldn't say, "I tried this after seeing tonnes of hype, but I just couldn't get into it - it's just not for me". It had to be: "This is one of the best books I've ever read and I couldn't put it down! But I quickly put it down and didn't read it." She says she was scared she wasn't reading it at the right time. You mean during your months on the dark academia bandwagon wasn't the right time to read a hallmark dark academia book, Ruby?

But she also has to stop herself from saying "I wanted to be reading it at the same time" - presumably as other people. She wants to be deep in the zeitgeist, riding the wave of newly-discovered things. But like everything, she's always three steps behind on every trend, so it becomes harder to force herself to like these things because everyone else has talked about them and moved on already and she's not part of the conversation (not that she'd have anything insightful to say). But she also has no interests or ideas of her own, so she'll always be stuck in that loop - never a trendsetter, but too culturally unaware to be part of the trends while they're still new and relevant.

I loooove writing and highlighting in books, and I tend to just give away any books that I've marked because I know I won't make much money from them, but Ruby could easily suggest people use digital highlighting software and just download the books?? I don't know who said it but she 100% just makes videos for herself because any normal person would offer these kinds of tips

Not to worry, she doesn't use candles as a practical tool. They are just a decorative prop to her.

For all she did to try to tenuously explain using scented candles as an essential tool for psychologically tricking yourself into feeling productive, 99.9% of the time, Ruby only lights unscented candle tapers in brought daylight. She's a clown.

And I think it's very telling of who Ruby really is. Half her essentials are flimsy tricks to force herself to be motivated, focus her attention for more than a few minutes or even just stay awake. She's inherently lazy and is so naturally disinterested with studying that she has to come up with a weird system of psychological trickery to make herself do any of it, and her ED isn't going to help her stay awake, focused and attentive.

Yeah, she clearly has no interest, no understanding and did no research into dark academia when she latched onto it as a fad.

Her entire criteria for a book or film qualifying as dark academia is: "It has a school in it, or one of the characters is a workaholic."

Like, she offers up The Children Act as one of the best examples of dark academia she could think of, because it contains a "pursuit of knowledge". I haven't read or watched it (and I doubt Ruby has, either), but from everything I can see, it's a standard legal thriller/drama. Is every John Grisham book dark academia now? Every police procedural?

Must remember to watch that classic dark academia series later: Law & Order.

It's clear she tried to recommend books that she has actually read but none of her books fit the vibe (because she reads like a child) so she just scrambled to find whatever she could

These days I've been binge watching the booktuber BooksandLala who is a 30-year-old mother based in Canada. Despite her not having studied literature in university and not calling herself a scholar or a study enthusiast or whatever Ruby's label is these days, the contrast with Ruby in how articulated she is when talking about books, how much thought she puts into her recommendations and ratings, and the variety in her readings is enormous. Ruby might as well have read none of the books she talks about

I thought it was just me who had started to find her insufferable but I’m not alone! When she mispronounced Truman Capote as an almost third year English Lit student I knew there had to be some other like minded folks who would of been equally outraged!


Quick side note, and I apologise if this has already been bought up in previous threads, does anyone know what happened to that cottage she was buying?

It must be over two years ago now, she put up a vlog about how she was buying this cottage and even stayed a night in it, however a few days later it was gone and she hasn’t breathed a word since? I’ve even seen the odd YouTube comment asking about it but obviously she never responds.

Does anyone know what happened? Because it drives me mad !

Also totally off topic, but since we’re talking about note taking etc, I’m starting my masters in English in October and after a brief period of excitement the imposter syndrome is setting in. Anyone got any tips for note taking and keeping up with work at postgrad level? I have adhd and I’m slightly panicking at the amount of reading I’m going to have to keep up with lmao Ruby is clearly useless with advice but people here regularly have useful and intelligent things to say so any help would be welcome

Ruby doesn't even make her videos for anybody except herself, in my opinion. All she does is more and more of the same exact videos saying 'you need to do lists, it's good to have a walk, here's all my stationary I showed you 10 times before!'.
For crying out loud, in her new video, I can't believe she even had to say 'it's important to do things OTHER THAN ACADEMICS'... EVERY single time it just feels like her ideal audience is....well, herself. She is probably one of the only people who sits at home doing nothing but studying, yoga and walks - this is presuming she isn't putting on a persona.

Yup. She just never considers that other people with diverse interests exist, and she has nothing going on in her life and her bizarre idiosyncrasies never change, so her content is a byproduct of her narcissism. Everything she makes is presented as if everyone in the world is just as weird and inept as her.

And it's not even like she's making content she wants to see herself either, it's just an assembly line of the same thing over and over, She has no interest in being a content creator, she just likes the money that comes with it.

I had a scroll through her website and saw the description for “Mina’s meal planner” - is it just me who finds it bizarre that there is no mention of this being a collaboration, or even specific mention of who Mina is?

It’s as if she just expects people to know, but what if someone found her website who isn’t a diehard follower of hers on social media?

The product/description itself also feels very clunky and not at all connected to the rest of her site. Right down to the fact it’s italicised - is that code for “collaboration?” Perhaps the code on her “master” to do list can tell us!

The final line also got me… it feels so random! For starters, surely the product dimensions should be front and centre, not phrased as a “also” afterthought. As for the “so sustainable” part… tell me that when you stop buying a new backpack every half term.

Not just you, I mentioned the same thing when it went up. It's bizarre. There was never any mention of Mina's surname or a link to her socials either on Ruby's Instagram or Pumpkin Productivity's site or Insta page (I think the only link to Mina ever put up was an Insta story buried in amongst Ruby's usual bullshit that was naturally gone in a day).

Unless you were already familiar with her, you'd have zero clue who she is or why she's supposedly an expert in food planning. It's terrible business publicity all around. I don't know why Mina agreed to it - she has her own store and gets more viewers than Ruby, so why she'd opt to do this is odd.

It absolutely makes sense knowing Ruby though. She hates other people getting the spotlight, and Mina Rome consistently gets more views than her, so it would not shock me at all if she passed over copy for the website that make it impossible to see who Mina is or divert viewers to her. It's the same mentality that causes her to edit out or talk over everything Blakeney has to say in videos, or avoiding commenting on or liking any comments that compliment Blakeney but rushing to heart comments complimenting herself. She wants all the attention. Pure narcissism.

It always amazes me a bit how casual so many influencers are about their online safety. They moan and complain that they get doxxed online but in 99% of cases, they‘ve done it themselves and haven’t been careful about what they’ve shared. This seems especially so when they’ve started out at a fairly young age and they really haven’t comprehended the possible future impact of sharing so, so much about their lives and homes online.

Exactly, they make it easy to find them, whether it's mentioning the specific area of a city they live in, only showing shops/scenery in a certain district (so it's obvious they live nearby), or showing the view out of their windows. Then it's all surprised-pikachu-face when their address gets leaked. While some people are just going to be naturally curious and would have no ill will behind finding that info, some people aren't going to be so innocent.

Her latest video is one of the few occasions that she's made some tiny degree of effort to keep some amount of consistency in her outfit changes between footage, or was careful to only use footage from 2-3 days rather than the usual 6+, but she still fucks up. She wears the same dress, but the footage flits back and forth between her wearing a dark brown button-up cardigan and a black V-neck pullover on top of the dress - she no doubt thought that'd be close enough to fool everyone.

You'll also notice that despite mentioning having toast after her nightmare courgette breakfast concoction, she doesn't even bother with the now obligatory shot of her taking a single, disgusting, grimacing bite before cutting away, undoubtedly after she dumped the rest in the bin. Guaranteed, she never ate any of it, and she always uses the same toast plate to aid in including quick insert shots of previous days' breakfasts.

First shot is her "making her bed", which is her usual process of dumping all her pillows on the dirty, dusty ground, not changing (or even adjusting) her bedsheets, half-assedly shifting her duvet (the same penguin cover she's had on for half the year) and then throwing all the filthed-up pillows back on the bed, ready to sleep on. What a disgusting cretin.

Claims to be reading "A Picnic on Hanging Rock". As well as fucking up the name, this is a book she claimed to finish on July 28th, which gives an idea how old this footage is.

"I want to get a lot of stuff done today." Immediately starts wasting time on making timetables for the day rather than actually doing anything productive.

She qualifies wrapping a birthday present for a friend and writing birthday cards as "admin", showing yet again that she treats the few friendships she has like tasks to be completed.

Of course, then her outfit changes completely, and she makes a note to point out that it's because of an unseen "bike ride" that no doubt never happened. Always be suspicious when she makes excuses for something trivial like that - methinks the dimwit liar doth protest too much. They have an off-screen family meal that, again, likely never happened and no food is shown, then Ruby shows a disgusting small bowl of some kind of sludge with a few banana slices in, which is presumably her actual meal.

It's a "day in the life" video that's equal parts lies and exposition as Ruby tells us about the day that happened off-screen rather than showing it (likely because it didn't happen).

Tbh I think Molly is just a standard clout chaser. From what I understand, she already had a following from her ED recovery channel, and now that she’s recovered from the ED she needs some new content and to expand her fan base a bit so is just using Ruby to get a leg up.
Also, Molly’s content is already very similar to what Ruby puts out (look at me vlogging my very easy middle class life, watch me sit and read a book in my lovely house in the home counties/west London, now I’m going to spend £12 on 1 latte and a croissant in this boujee cafe etc), but there’s only so far that can take you, so I reckon she’ll be trying to expand into some more academic / booktuby type content in the near future which she can use Ruby to help with too.

This!! I have to admit I felt captivated by Molly's content first -- it seemed like a fresh air compared to Ruby vlogging to her Victorian heart's content. However, after having watched a few videos it all feels rather shallow in Molly's vlogs. She's going quite the extra mile to provide a "bubbly"/London/aesthetic feel to her videos but that's all there ever is. She's turning self-care into an indulgent middle-class aesthetics. I'm curious to know how Molly will cope once she's back to Oxford.
