I'm hoping that's pure sarcasm.

Ruby's video production skills are equivalent to (and usually less than) those of a drunk monkey let loose in an editing bay. The only difference is, the monkey will sober up. Ruby's proven in six years of doing this that she's never going to improve - if anything, she's gotten lazier and less skilled with time.

OK I have actually found the house online based on the clip of her standing in the kitchen in this video Obviously won't post a link or the address, but it's pretty easy to find if you Google "1 bedroom cottage Buckinghamshire", scroll down to about the 6th website on the results page (has an icon kind of like a red circle), it's currently advertised to rent for £1600 per month. You can easily identify the kitchen in the pictures (delete if not appropriate)

Personally I would modify this to “being different is OK, as long as it’s real”. Being different is awesome - imagine how shit the world would be if we were all the same. But guess what? Sometimes being the same as everyone else is awesome too! Having fun in the same ways, reading and watching the same stuff, going to the same places etc. The issue isn’t that Ruby is different, it’s that she’s so obviously pretending to be different because she’s just so ‘not like other girls.’ Her points of difference aren’t authentic, they’re things she does because she thinks they make her special or superior in some way. She doesn’t like going out to clubs or pubs, drinking, doing all the dumb stuff people at uni do. In theory that’s fine - nights out aren’t for everyone, I barely drink myself and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being tee-total. The problem is Ruby doesn’t like this stuff because she sees people who do it as less intelligent or hardworking than her. She keeps watching Anne with an E because of her unhealthy childhood obsession, not because she genuinely prefers it to Breaking Bad. It’s ok to be basic and like the stuff everyone else likes, as long as you do genuinely like it too. Ruby’s points of difference are all so phoney.

Many of the things Ruby does are things I do (i'm 21 and a few months older than her) I read childrens books and I love to dress up and cosplay. But I'm still a normal uni student. I don't drink or party and I'm not ashamed by that. Another thing that annoys me with her is that she's 21 and she's not bothered by a job (ye her parents are well off) But she's not getting a job or at least looking for experience. She's spoiled as hell. If she was taken into the real world I'm sure she wouldn't survive and run back to mummy and daddy, like she's done before. I'm still trying to look for a job and honestly I'm not successful but at least I'm trying. Yes I think I'm childish but there is a time and a place for being childish and that's not when I need to be an adult.

Sorry to be a bit off topic again, but I've been reading through all the threads and found this video as people were talking about a puppy called Lola, and I just want to say...wtf is this breathing in the audio? I actually had to pause the video and rewind it to make sure it was from this video. Edit- and yes this video is old from 2018 but it's just really strange to me.

As someone close to Ruby's age this baffles me. I feel once you move out, unless you have an absolutely terrible time as long as you have a good relationship with your parents you would want to go and visit but not move back home, anxiety or not. I suffer from extreme anxiety, have been back to my parents house and was stuck there for a while due to the pandemic, and as nice as they are there's no way I'd move back in unless I absolutely needed to.
I know the fear of being alone is very real, but to me running to your parents really isn't helpful.

Absolutely, Ruby would only benefit from cutting the cord and getting some exposure therapy by living alone instead of rushing back home at every minor opportunity to be mollycoddled by her parents. She's gotten worse since this video, and it'll only get worse from here. Even then she was practically talking herself out of the idea of leaving home even after already being locked into a mortgage.

Since then, she's ditched uni under the cloak of 'ronaphobia (despite proving time and time again that she never really had any anxiety about Covid, and she'd happily lick a sewer grate if a sponsor offered her money), bought a child's bed, filled her wardrobe with a child's clothes, wrecked her health trying to physically transform her body into that of a child and become more sheltered and deluded than ever.

She's longing for the days when she was told by her parents and the teachers she sucked up to that she was special and gifted, before she dipped her toe into adulthood and realised she was just a small, dull fish in a massive ocean full of more diverse, brighter and interesting creatures. She's not particularly intelligent, or smart about her academic habits, her YouTube fame was founded on lucking into the studytube fad and having a vaguely unique angle (Hermione cosplay) to deliver on that rather than any real creative talent or ability (as evidenced by the fact that her content hasn't changed or improved on any level in 6 years). She's quickly experiencing the result of diminishing returns.

That's only going to get harder as her views decline, her health fails, she fades into irrelevance, and academia (if she makes it onto a Masters course) gets harder for her to brute force her way through with endless busywork and monopolising her teachers' time.

If she'd stuck it out living at uni and continued with therapy, she might be in a better position to deal with the major changes she's going to have to handle after uni ends. As it stands, the combination of graduation and YouTube irrelevance is going to hit her like a speeding train, and she'll have no emotional tools to deal with it besides running to mummy and daddy and throwing endless tantrums that life isn't giving her what she thinks she's entitled to.

So it's not surprising she did the same with that presentation. She introduces it like a teacher. "I hope you're all adjusting well to online learning" is not a normal thing for a fellow student to say. They were all suffering through the peak of covid, just say "I hope you're all doing okay in this nightmare year we're having" - for most people, studying isn't the only thing in the world and they have other things to worry about.

Urgh yes! That's what bugged me about her script - it had such an emphasis on her as a person that it must have created such a weird power dynamic with her audience. She should have been making points and then applying real-world examples from her life, not the other way around. She definitely saw herself as a superior font of knowledge and she assumed the 'teacher' role without hesitation. No one (including lecturers, peers, and heck even first years) would have appreciated that know-it-all, wannabe-pantomath attitude.

i think there are loads of people who are not familiar with the vegan/plant-based debate (and ruby might be one of them), and would simply consider themselves or others "vegan" even though they eat honey or buy second hand leather, because their diet is vegan otherwise. in my opinion it's a very nitpicky topic lol

"Aesthetic bookshelf tour" AKA watch me superficially judge my books by their covers and show you the pretty pictures, don't expect me to dive any deeper into themes/ literary devices or even give a quick one sentence blurb of every book I've obviously definitely read because I'm a bOoKWOrM!! And I already labelled it "aesthetic" so you aren't allowed to bully me on the lack of depth!!

Jack Edwards is not my fave but you can't deny the difference between their book tours, it's night and day. One actually sounds well-read, intelligent, literature-educated. And no, it's not you, Ruby.

She recounts her teachers giving her their books instead of her thoughts on the book itself. I think that just reveals everything she values- praise and validation over actual learning.

Also I grew up in the East and was never exposed to the ancient Greeks yet was able to appreciate the Song of Achilles anyway. Like any other reader, I used context clues, deduction, comprehension, and logic to piece the puzzle together. Meanwhile Ruby has to do extra rEsEaRcH and still can't get through it. I'm confused, is she not willing to LEARN new things from the book? Isn't that what reading is about?? Or is she scared to use her own analytical/ reading skills...?

After every book video I always come out of it with a few new book recommendations to add on my Goodreads. But Ruby has somehow turned me off every single book on her bookshelf. "Dickens' Sketches by Boz gives you a tour of London before...reading his other books". A* explanation right there.

The most excited she sounded was when she picked up Jade's book. Which she hasn't even read yet. Ok then.

whatever talk she gave in that video, it obviously wasn't for one of her normal classes. she introduces herself as a second year english student according to her notion notes, which she wouldn't have to do in a class full of her english student peers. i assume it was some kind of extra lecture series exeter organised, accessible to all their students, and invited speakers to. in that context i think it's fair for ruby to introduce herself and explaining that she is an "influencer", as this is the norm for events like that, for speakers to say a few words about who they are. just wondering why exeter thought her being an influencer makes her equipped to speak on digital learning

Sure, it’s clear that it’s some kind of an extra thing she was invited to speak at and I believe she says as much in the video. The thing is, she doesn’t just introduce herself, she devotes half her presentation to talking about herself and how she’s an influencer and basically started studytube singlehandedly. Which has very little to do with the topic of digital learning. She also says after the presentation that she was unsure if the speech she gave was relevant (hey look, finally a glimmer of self-awareness!), which seems to me a pretty clear sign that she did in fact devote a lot of time to talking about ME ME ME ME MEEEE LOOK AT MEEEE.

Confused millenial here. I thought dark academia means reading a lot/being interested in the classics (both music and literature). Or is it a literary genre of its own?

I don't think it's a genre but it is like a recognizable "vibe" that books have lol I don't really know how to explain it. Like you could describe a book as dark academia but I don't think it could be considered a genre. The setting, themes and general tone make it dark academia

What? Wasn't she reading this like a few weeks ago? What's changed that she finally understands the hype in this short amount of time?
What she means is that people began wondering why she just never mentioned SoA again and questioning why she didn't like it and didn't want to be seen as the odd one out that doesn't like a popular book. I thought she wasn't like other girls, what happened there?
