their sizes are deceiving in terms of their electoral system - canada is huge but only has (from memory oops) i think ten provinces and three or four territories. their electoral system is based on ours iirc. australia too is huge, but only broken into (i think) seven individual territories and six states.
to have a country set up into fifty individual states is madness tbh. the us was broken to begin with and remains so.

People were saying that in some religions like Judaism and Islam women are permitted to have an abortion under various reasons so if the federal states deny those women abortion then they are interfering with the right to religious freedom.

But the popular vote has duck all to do with the American system. They use an electoral college over there and Trump comfortably beat Clinton on that. Both knew the rules and the system beforehand. Can’t change it retrospectively, if you can I want the Hand of God goal in 1986 struck from the record. Trump was lucky he got to pick three judges, but the nominations have long been the prerogative of the sitting president since the age of Washington and Jefferson. Once again you can’t alter the constitution because you don’t like the outcome.I always get the sense that religious schools are behind their presence.
It’s hardly democraticTrump lost the popular vote in the presidential election and yet he got to choose three judges for the Supreme Court panel which ultimately tipped the balance in favor of conservatives. Not only that, his nominations went through in his last year in office but when Obama tried appointing judges in his final year the Republicans blocked him saying it was unjust.
And if Obama hadn’t been such a ineffective lame duck in his final term he might not have lost the senate majority and the republicans wouldn’t have been able to pull that stunt. However political games have been part of democratic systems since Ancient Athens. No point snivelling “unfair” because Republicans played them better than Democrats.
Someone on Twitter said it’s Obama’s fault because he didn’t codify Roe vs Wade - does that mean make it so legally binding that it can’t be overturned?
Obama ran on it as a priority but then later said it wasn't as high up on the legislative agenda. I think it was probably too 'extreme' an issue to tie himself too and there was a lot of general feeling that even with the Democrat majority that not everyone supported it. The US is a huge and deeply divided country, even within the 2 main parties, ideologies vary massively i.e. there are very conservative democrats. But ultimately yes, the Democrats missed the boat so to speak however it may not be so simple as people are making out. Perhaps though people would be more encouraged if it appeared that Obama had made more effort after promising to do so. (Clinton also had this opportunity in the 90s).
What the hell are you saying? A democratic vote should be one person one vote equally weighted against their fellow citizen. The electoral college is bull and robbed the will of millions of voters. The republicans said at the time that Obama appointing a judge in his last term (which is when any president is referred to as a lame duck) would be depriving the American citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard. I am a forty year old woman and to think that we had a better handle on our rights when I was 20 sends me into a rage. So a bunch of old white men have the right to tell American women what to do with their bodies?? WTAF. I want to take to the streets and rage and rage.

I was trying to reason with my pro-life American uncle the other day and there's no getting through to him. He (and the rest of the pro-birthers) need only look at what happened here in Ireland. Until 2018, women in Ireland continued to suffer (and in some cases, die) due to a lack of access to legal and safe abortion. I had a friend who was the victim of grape, have to travel to England alone and pay £500 to terminate her unwanted pregnancy. I've had friends in university take black-market pills and be left without any medical support due to the illegality of it. And what's worse is, Ireland is a tiny island of 4 million. I can't imagine what this will look like in a vastly bigger country. Scary times to be a woman.

I can’t comprehend why anyone feels their views should be forced on others, particularly when their lives are at risk. I would never get an abortion myself unless my life was at risk, but I will never ever take away or judge anyone who chooses abortion for any reason whatsoever. It’s their body and therefore their choice! No one else’s business. I’m certain anyone who makes that difficult choice is going through enough without anyone else’s unwanted input. It must always be the woman’s choice. Taking away that choice isn’t “pro life” either if it risks the life of the woman and the baby when they are forced to take matters into their own hands.
This isn’t only happening in America. In Northern Ireland where I live people are STILL having to travel to other parts of the U.K. typically flying to England to have abortions because even though the law was recently changed it hasn’t been put into practice. Making an already traumatising experience even more traumatic being away from home and familiar surroundings.
The erasure of women and faux offence and outrage at all things woman has most certainly led to these decisions.

That you think the electoral college is bull is frankly irrelevant. It has been the system used for American elections from day one and the Trump v Clinton situation was hardly without precedent. The first occurrence was 1824 Adams v Jackson, then again in 1876 and 1888 as well as 2000 Bush v Gore. Interestingly neither of the two main parties have raised the abolition of the electoral college as even a straw in the wind.
I may be talking ignorant nonsense however I am fully aware that Obama had a Republican controlled senate. And so did Trump. Hence there was duck all Obama could do about it even if he wanted. Where in the arbitrary rules you are drawing up is there any constitutional, or even legal, requirement for the Republicans to be non-partisan?

You don’t understand the purpose of the electoral college. It was designed to disenfranchise voters and was implemented under the guise of preventing the possibility of a despot taking office. The electoral college was in reality an appeasement for the pro-slavery south. Let’s debate when you’re better informed.
I'm trying not to worry too much the b rabid religious nutjobs can't undo the invention of safe abortion pills. There won't be coat hangers anymore. There's organisations such as women on waves who help and give abortion pills. I really hope it's over turned
I don’t want to speak on behalf of another poster and they can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you’re missing the point of what they’re trying to say. They’re not talking about the pros, cons, rights, wrongs, benefits or losses and whether the EC set up is a good thing or a bad thing - they’re saying it is in place in the USA, that it’s always been place in the USA, and the candidates entering into a vote for the US presidency - as well as the people voting - were well aware of the set up whether they personally agree with it or not. So one “can’t” question its validity after a vote because when they voted, they were fully aware of it.
