shocking. Was this the start of being ‘unwoke’? I love how tattle opens my eyes to tossers. I disliked Hannah more than surhthi but I think Hannah might actually be the more reasonable one.

Actually unwoke did seem to start after then. She probably felt like she had been the victim of an attempted cancellation rather than just receiving perfectly valid criticism for really ignorant offensive comments.
I don't know how you can be British and over 30 and not understand the level of hurt and anger using that word in relation to Hillsborough would cause.
They used to joke about being loud confident and wrong as well.

Suruthi in particular acts like she's super intellectual and knowledgeable on current affairs. Hillsborough might have happened decades ago but the disaster has been ongoing and in the press so much in our adult lives.
I think she definitely felt over criticised.
They have a good habit of just ignoring all feedback until people get really pissed off and then addressing it.

I agree! Hannah is a bit of a know it all but I think it comes from a place of insecurity which is the absolute opposite of Suruthi.
I've warmed to Hannah more but I still think her episodes are poorly written and hard to follow. I think she has dyslexia so probably not her fault but she could get help writing thr scripts.

That's a good question... I take it to mean a person who sets themselves apart from "woke" beliefs like left wing politics, supporting trans rights, being anti racist, etc.
In Suruthi's case its about rallying against cancel culture and obsessing about freedom of speech.

I didn’t either, how pathetic. I wonder if there was a huge drop off in listeners yesterday for shorthand? I’ve got Amazon Music on my phone but listen to all my podcasts through the IPhone app, I don’t like Shorthand enough to even switch to another app which I already have so I can’t see lots of people purposefully downloading it, especially with it being Amazon.

I see they met up with Ash and Alaina from Morbid while in Boston - bet there’s a Wondery Collab coming. Morbid is another podcast I used to love but now don’t listen to at all as the girls changed so much and the quality of the episodes dropped so much.

Listened from cupboard days until it stopped being about the crime and became a money grab with the book and awards and then became a Political, religion and dating show.

S is the brains behind the marketing and contracting and I doubt they care one iota about the fans opinions on anything especially the Wondery tie in.

Have been taking a look at their patreon stats (they are updated daily) and they are one of the few that gives the £ amount.

There was a huge drop in subscribers after the non announcement. The number have gone back up BUT the £ has dramatically dropped by at least 5k a month. Again, I doubt they care with all the ad revenue also but same as with Morbid, it’s if they can keep up the quality which I doubt.

So so many podcasts go down the using script writers when they start earning but if you know the style it’s very obvious and it often goes wrong. Casefile is another one who has done both and they don’t care because £.

The selling out, as a lot of people feel towards the tie ins is understandable.

There are a lot of big name, Casefile, Morbid, Mr Ballen et al.

Heck even Moms and murder who have now become Moms and Mysteries is bizarre.

The money grab I kind of get but how RH figures have dived is interesting.

Patreons are massively back up but the pledged is down at least £6k pm

Potentially the dive in patreon is down to how they portrayed themselves in the beginning though and having listeners who shared those values? They don’t really align with that anymore…

(They were more left leaning, unhappy about big tax dodging corps, etc)

Have listened from the days where they had to literally contort themselves into cardboard boxes /makeshift sound proof props. They have definitely gonna downhill. The book was a money grab to begin with. Sruthi has always come across as a snooty mae made bearable by the fact that the focus was on the cases and less on her or Hannah.

Clearly they’ve achieved a lot of success and I don’t blame them for going after the ££ but the quality of their cases and their retelling of it has gone down.

Casefile is the same, compelling cases told in an interesting and factual way, as soon as Casey and the podcast started to gain more publicity the quality went down hill. Lots of obscure European and worldwide cases with names of victims and perps mangled because he couldn’t pronounce them properly, listeners unable to follow the case because of the sheer number of characters, places and circumstances. Most of them unsolved which you didn’t find out until the end of the episode. Totally unlistenable.

RedHanded has gone the same way with their recent cases. Historical cases that no one asked for, cases that deserved a slighter longer run time crammed into just over an hour, which is then broken up even further with their asides about their travels/education/love lives and so on.

I loveeeee that RH has got a thread! I used to love the pod, as back in the day they seemed to cover the less 'well-known' cases and I found it interesting. Now I will dip in and out if I remember to, which is probably once or twice a year? Saw S in a cafe near me a few months ago with her fella, and I couldn't place her for ages, then I remembered lol - she's that true crime girl who thinks she's quite the comedian lol.

What turned me off was partly me just going off true crime (think it might have had its day?) but also GOD these two think they are much funnier than they are ... like, there's nothing wrong with not being funny, you're not comedians, but please don't try and force it jeeeez. Plus I was frankly horrified at much money their Patreon brings in !!!!

So much money....I don't think you should make your living entertaining other people with stories of the worst crimes imaginable. I get why people find these stories interesting (and ofc I have listened in the past!) but them making that much money from murders seems wrong.

I know what you mean. I used to listen to crime junkies a lot but that has gone off the boil too now, but audiochuck does seem to make donations to charity and support organisations that help with cold cases.
