I don’t know what to make of this case I really don’t. As someone who has worked in a defence barristers chambers for 15 yrs this really is super odd.
She may plead at the February hearing. She has said she wants this dealt with ASAP.
Guilty or innocent this is utterly horrific

hi all,

have just found this thread as i came across a story about Lucy Letby ( the nurse who was arrested for murdering 8 babies)..I am also an obsessive about true crime and the psychology behind why people kill other people. I have not yet read through the entire thread but has anyone listened to the podcast called "Murder Most Foul" narrated by Isla Traquair. Its a story based in Scotland during the 1990's of a young girl who was brutally murdered. It was a brilliant listen. There is also another series ( which tbh hasnt really captivated me in the same way as the first series). Other podcasts i have enjoyed :-

serial - ( first series which was about Adnan Syed) - Gripping to listen too
Counter Clock - really enjoyed this but found it ended suddenly and feels " left open" which could have been their intention as the case remains to be solved. Kind of bugged me a bit though.

Another case ( with podcast/ tv show ) - is the Disappearance of Maura Murray . Another unsolved missing person/mystery case dating back to 2004. This case is enormous - there is a reddit page with peoples theories about her disappearance. Its available on hayu ( was on sky crime but looks like it has been removed recently). If you havent seen it then its worth a watch as this case is so complex ( and fascinating) . Other cases in the series that are good - ( all these are on Sky Crime)

The Killing of Jessica Chambers
The Disappearance of Susan Cox Powell
The Disappearance of Crystal Rogers
The Disappearance of Natalee Holloway

I have recently watched Murder on Middle Beach which i also really enjoyed.

The above are all USA based ( bar the murder most foul case) - i do prefer UK true crime if im honest ( i think i prefer how the story is told - i have found that USA true crime shows err on the side of the dramatics with annoying music which for me takes away the seriousness of the crime that has been committed). I have enjoyed the above USA mentioned podcasts/ shows because the information was presented in as though its an investigation and not simply a presentation of the case.

I read 'The Five' recently which is about Jack the Ripper's victims and it was really interesting. A fascinating insight into life during the Victorian era. It didn't really mention the killer or the murders much, just who found them and about their burials, and what items they had on them when they were taken to the morgue. It was more about the lives of the women and their everyday struggles. The conclusion went into how Jack the Ripper is now used a lot as entertainment and he's so famous, but not much is known about the women he killed and they have kind of been forgotten.

I believe her ‘justification’ was she she thought social services were going to take the children away. Twisted, evil logic there.
I was living in Sheffield at the time this all broke out - the police took to SM to tell people to stop making death threats to the family at one stage. There was also another member of the immediate family who was frequently posting on FB about ( i think the person was the step brother to Sarah Barrass) . Then mum ( of the woman who poisoned her children ) appeared on fb as well further fuelling the fire. There were many many rumours ( and it was rumours) that the father of the three youngest children was the mum's brother ( blood) which is the reason she wanted to kill them, and that the reason they had become romantically involved was because of the incestuous relationship between Cersei & Jamie Lannister on the tv show GOT. This is also something that the step brother ( who kept posting comments on FB ) had alleged to be a fact. Mum ( of the poisoner ) did not confirm this though. Its also worth pointing out that the family are from a very rough area of Sheffield - not sure there would have been the same interest had they been from the leafy suburbs. It was a truly tragic and horrific event that went on for some time ( on SM at least). The police refused to release any details other than the absolute bare minimum due to concerns for other family members. In all my years on FB i have never witnessed anything like it.
She was jailed at the end of 2019 i believe.

I love listening to murder/crime podcasts when running but it does mean that I'm too scared to run the forest tracks at the back of my house in the winter 👀😂
I listen to murder ones to make me run faster!! 🤣

I've been fascinated with murder for as long as I can remember and I read and watch a huge amount of material on the subject.

Since I medically retired five years ago, my interest has only grown, especially with local newspapers reporting live from court on bigger cases and the ability to look at victims and defendants on social media, it's probably at obsessive levels now. In the UK, we don't actually find out the full details of the case until the first day of trial (which is absolutely how it should be) when the prosecution lay out their case but I do like to try and piece things together before then if I can. Social media is an absolutely goldmine for this. That's what interests me to be honest - people's relationships, interactions and motives.

The way I work is that I will read about a new murder on the BBC news website or maybe I'll see something on one of the local newspapers if I'm following a trial. I then have a look at Facebook and see if I can work out if it's likely to interest me. You can usually work out what kind of case it it - I'd say 85% of the time it will turn out to be drug related in some way. I'm particularly interested in cases involving the homeless community and vulnerable victims as I tend to feel these are the people that have been maybe forgotten in some way by society. I'm pretty hardened but those are the cases that really get to me and obviously child murders. I also really enjoy (if that's the right word) purely circumstantial cases and no body trials.

If it piques my interest, then it goes on my "trial calendar" (like I said, no judgement 😂) and I'll follow it through until conclusion. I had to start this as I was losing track! Certain local newspapers - Liverpool Echo, Essex Live, Teeside Live and Coventry Live are very good - usually do live reporting on bigger cases where one of their journalists sits in court and reports what's going on every day. I love this! It really gives you a feel for the case and the whole court process. I like to think I have a good understanding now of the legal system and sentencing guidelines (all self taught)

I check court listings to keep track of my trials and read judge's full sentencing remarks once the case is over (they are usually published in high profile cases and are very illuminating) I also have a list of unsolved cases, missing people, cases waiting for charges to be brought and inquest outcomes which I check on periodically.

I only have one active trial I'm following at the moment, which is due to restart again tomorrow after the Christmas break, and I have one new one starting tomorrow which I suspect will turn out to be drugs related. The week after, I have six new trials scheduled to start! Happy to share details and discuss if anyone is interested.

As for TV, I love 24 Hours in Police Custody. There's a two part special on tomorrow and Tuesday about a trial I actually followed so I'm looking forward that. Also, I don't usually follow cases in Scotland (or Wales) - I'm busy enough with England - but I did follow a no body trial there involving a vulnerable victim with learning difficulites. There is a programme on BBC2 this week about it on Wednesday - Murder Trial: The Disappearance of Margaret Fleming.

ITV did a couple of really good real life crime dramas last year - Manhunt and A Confession - and have a new one starting on Wednesday called White House Farm about Jeremy Bamber. I think it will be interesting to see what slant they take on it given Bamber still proclaims his innocence. I'm not sure he is but I do believe his conviction is unsafe.

My favourite USA real life crime shows are:

Cold Justice
The First 48
Disappeared
On The Case with Paula Zahn
Shattered
Reasonable Doubt
48 Hours
Dateline

So, there you go. My obsession laid bare.

Let's get chatting 😂
I’m also into the court reporting live on newspaper websites and can relate to much of what you’ve mentioned.

Yes it is very difficult to understand the mentality of people who plan and attempt to murder their own children. Particularly because they drugged the boys first and then she looked for other ways to finish the job off. It beggars belief. What’s worse is that what was reported will be the tip of the iceberg. How they both live with themselves is anyone’s guess..

No one really knew what had happened to the boys until the court case. Prior to this it was still rumours flying around for several months. The police and the media were closed lipped about the whole thing.

Through reading this thread I have subscribed to several podcasts ( this one included). Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

Anyway .. I have read through the thread now and think I have also watched most of what has been mentioned so far. My thoughts :-

the staircase - guilty. Too coincidental he had two wives who dies in the same way. Also I didn’t like looking at him as he looked like he was made of wax.
Making a murderer - watched both series on Netflix. I don’t believe Steven Avery nor is guilty and think he was wrongly convicted however I DO believe that his son is involved . I think the police department just can’t let it go now. It’s gone too far and they are worried they will just look like incompetent ( which tbh they are) but anyway .. I digress. Ken Kratz - makes my skin crawl. He is shady. Very shady. The treatment of Brendan Dassey - appalling.
The trials of Gabriel Fernandez - cried multiple times watching this series. Utterly heartbreaking. I am repulsed by the woman who birthed him ( sorry love you are not a mother in any way shape or form). You do not deserve this title.
Don’t f* uck with cats - This was a crazy watch ( distressing to see the dead kittens but glad they didn’t show him killing them). It’s upsetting just thinking about it. Viewing it would have been too much.

I also a huge huge fan of 24 hours in police custody ( and anything police related tbh) . I can’t wait for the new series to start on Monday.

Also someone mentioned they liked to hear of cases regarding missing people. There is a podcast that has just started called The Missing which features live cases of missing people. There is only a couple of episodes ( it started just before Xmas) but it’s worth a listen.

This is the one ( there are two with this title) . The crypto queen is also worth a listen too.

Just watching the Garrett Phillips case on sky crime. Have had to switch it off as I can’t stand the bully boy tactics from the police. As it stands I don’t believe Nick Hillary is responsible and the police making him strip naked is nothing short of wanting to humiliate him and them dick swinging. It sickens me. I do not like the American police bully boy attitudes and their racial bias.

I also don’t like John Jones ( can’t recall his name? Think this is it) - there is something that doesn’t sit right with me . His response about why Tandy Phillips had rang him was very strange. Why he couldn’t say I’m her ex and she knows me is beyond me. He was also very overpowering when she was being interviewed. She was sat all scrunched up and he was almost manhandling her. Very weird. No idea who killed Garrett. Couldn’t even make a guess .

I read the Serious Case Review and it made me think about this differently.
The older boy had started sexually assaulting other kids including the little sister and the next eldest was getting obsessed with porn. Sarah asked and asked for help from social services but she got more ans more scared she had made her kids monsters. She had been sexually abused as a child and she couldn't stand to see it again.
Really really difficult read.

I haven't read it but with the majority of cases there is always more to it. Things are never black and white and shades of grey are many and varied.
I struggle with a lot of media reporting about this type of thing because they always need a villain. Sometimes there is no villain, no bad guy, just people doing their best, often reactively and often in the shadow of their own devastating life experiences.

i always read SCRs - you can find them on the child services pages of county council websites. They are not an easy read but if you have an interest in the origins of crime they really help build a deep understanding of the dreadful lives some people lead.

I recently watched Murder on Middle Beach, it really was an interesting documentary. As soon as I saw the young man was covertly recording his police meetings, I knew that would backfire on him. However I did feel sorry for him, the whole family seemed very dysfunctional with so many potential suspects. He is probably the only one I didn't suspect

I live in South Yorkshire, I remember when this happened, extended family members starting bringing up the mums face book account and posts she repeatedly made about the children. Apparently she had spent years trying to have her children diagnosed with learning disabilities, but every time she was told the children were fine. Family members had stated she felt she would get more benefits if the children had diagnosed problems. She had posted some very strange comments and all this had been seen by family members. I totally agree that if this had been a more affluent and educated family, this would not have received as much attention.

Neil Entwistle did this a few years back. He moved to America with his US-born wife, then shot her and his baby daughter.

Entwistle said his wife had killed the baby, and then killed herself. No evidence of that exists.

In August 2008, he was tricked into shaving his head in an attempt to secure the protection of a white supremacist prison gang. Instead of giving him protection, the gang had reportedly said: "It's a nice gesture on your part but we're gonna kill you." They haven't yet......
