I read the Serious Case Review and it made me think about this differently.
The older boy had started sexually assaulting other kids including the little sister and the next eldest was getting obsessed with porn. Sarah asked and asked for help from social services but she got more ans more scared she had made her kids monsters. She had been sexually abused as a child and she couldn't stand to see it again.
Really really difficult read.
Do you have a link to this please?

Ignore me, found it on google.

That shows a completely different side of what happened... obviously there is absolutely no justification for what she did, but it sounds like she was scared of their behaviour and struggling for support. The over sexualised behaviour of the children makes me wonder if they were being/had been abused? Very very sad all round

i always read SCRs - you can find them on the child services pages of county council websites. They are not an easy read but if you have an interest in the origins of crime they really help build a deep understanding of the dreadful lives some people lead.
Is there somewhere to read historic case reviews? I'd like to read one from 2008

You can usually find them on the NSPCC website of they involve children. The names are obviously changed but they are sorted by year.

Thank you for this. I actually didn’t know this information ( as the police / media) were extremely tight lipped about the case. I would be interested in reading the case file if it’s still available online. Did it mention anything about how she involved their father? It’s one thing to have these ideas yourself but then to bring another party in and get them to agree is another. Now I’m reflecting on this information I would guess i do not have the facts - questions about where the kids have learned this behaviour from has also arisen? They must have had this happen to them for them to be doing the same to other siblings?
just as aside note -sheffield city council have been heavily advertising ( for the last year - bar a small break during the first lockdown) for children and young peoples services ( as I have not to long ago graduated from uni )workers as well as social workers. I also know ( through a uni placement) that CYP services have been working at the bare minimum since the 2010’s cut ( Sheffield council lost close to 50% of its budget allocated from central government) overall . I wonder if this is a reason why it’s been missed ( overlooked?) due to lack of staff ( who are already at breaking point from heavy caseloads) . Apologies for making this political - but this is all starting to peice together now.
should also point out I don’t work for the council currently.
thank you for this info though 🙂

Thank you so much. I've found the case I was interested in reading more on

ETA: It looks like you have to somehow loan the paper to read but I can't figure out how to do it.

I looked and it isn't. I found something that says the online links to papers are deleted after 5 years so I'm guessing its long gone since the case was 2008. I have spent all day reading random SCR's now though!

I’m watching an Amazon series about the smiley face killers. Not the best programme but it’s creepy. Loads of young men have drowned in America and their bodies are found near graffiti of smiley faces. They think it might be a group of serial killers.

New to the thread but an avid true crime reader/watcher.

The case review is a really upsetting read. Obviously dont condone what happened to the children but the family were failed time and time again by the system (how many times do we hear this).

On reading the tabloids you would think the mum was a monster but dig a little deeper and you realise how much she tried to get help and support for her children and must have just totally lost control of the situation and did something so terrible.

Of course they both deserve to spend many years in prison for what they did and the responsibility for the boys death is firmly on them but cant help but feel like the authorities have to shoulder the blame for not intervening the warning signs were there that the children were at risk.

Truly a sad case for both the murdered boys and the remaining children who I hope are now safe happy and loved.

I can’t bring myself to read about cases like this involving children.
Show me the gruesomest murder scene and I won’t be fazed but if it is a child or an animal all of a sudden the water works start.

I haven’t read the case review and I’m sure it is super sad but clearly some people shouldn’t procreate and some are not good parents no matter how much they love their kids

I 1000% agree with you, apologies if my post seemed like I was making excuses for them as there is no excuse for what happened and like I said the blame is fully with them. However I do think the authorities failed all those children and maybe it could have been prevented.

So sick of hearing the phrase lessons have been learnt in regards to cases like this when kids end up dead, injured, abused or neglected because someone (often more than one person) has failed to safeguard these kids.

I work for the local authority very near to where this happened and I am ashamed to say similar has happened where I work (not related to the department I work in) and it makes me sick to see how families/children are let down so badly.

Heartbreaking. Let down again and again her whole life.

Why a truly horrific story, that poor woman, let down at every stage of her life.

This is one of the heart breaking things I’ve read in a long a long while. Layers of neglect.

I very much hope she is not executed - what a travesty of justice, just for Trump to prove a point.

I totally disagree, she cut a baby out of a womb of a woman that was still alive whilst she did it. Yes her life was tit and she was let down but if that is not pure evil then what is?
I hate that MH is held as a trophy card for why a person should not be locked up/executed/etc

I agree with you massively but I sympathise how people with mental Health do not get the support they need and Too many times they commit a act like this that perhaps could be avoided if they had got support but it’s a lot of ifs and buts isn’t it :(
