General question - when defending does a lawyer have to believe their client is innocent?

Hi I hope I’ve done this right. I found this

Thank you, @superhanscrack 🙏 Absolutely harrowing. JFC, these barely human, evil pieces of absolute garbage, that's about all I can say reading some of these stories. What I wouldn't give to be able to go back and save these women. 🙁💔

Just seen on the news that Jordan McSweeney has won his appeal to have his sentence reduced.

Absoloute scum, cannot believe that.

Honestly what a bunch of absolute dickheads. I could use so many more words for him. The judges are stupid! He didn't even turn up to his original sentencing nor this one but we will give him reduced him. He also had it off with a prison officer! I'm so angry! Her poor family.

I know sentencing guidelines and rights of appeal are very important, but there is something so repulsive about being able to successfully argue it down. Like "yeah I killed her, but it wasn't THAT bad".

What a slap in the face to her family

I find this reasoning outrageous. Because he beat her unconscious so quickly he gets a reduced minimum term because she wouldn’t have felt any pain afterwards? I’m gobsmacked. And furious.

This vile piece of tit who didn't even come into the dock - has not shown one ounce of regret for his actions.
Normally i agree with the due process of law but this is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Her poor family - how can they live with this.

Not at all. In fact they choose their specialism. Once a defence barrister, always a defence barrister (same for prosecution barristers). I didn’t know this until quite recently! So they don’t have to believe their client is innocent, they just have to look for holes in the case and introduce doubt where appropriate.

I cannot believe what I’m reading.

So future murderers just need to know that if they clobber their victims early on, they’ll get a shorter sentence?

I remember seeing the footage of the news where McSweeny literally prowled the streets for hours looking for a vulnerable woman to attack. IIRC the other women he encountered weren’t alone so he didn’t risk it? Dangerous, dangerous man. He should never be released.

It’s so obvious she is guilty though right?

I’m fascinated by this case! It’s like true crime fiction…the jealous, murderous yoga teacher tracks her rival by Strava, shoots her multiple times, does a runner to Costa Rica, undergoes facial surgery and dyes her hair, gets a job and a boyfriend…and then gets extradited to the US into the hands of a seemingly tit hot lawyer. She’s got to be found guilty though.

I’m fascinated too. It’s a real “that only happens in the movie kinda crime”

Absolutely. I am majorly peeved they aren't streaming the full trial - I spent all this time waiting to watch only to find out the day or so before that only opening statements, closing statements and verdict were being streamed by a pool camera... I then tried to watch the opening but could barely hear most of it so gave up. 🙄

I actually see this as worse, she was unconscious and unable to fight back early on yet he still carried on in his violent attack. Surely this makes him even more of a monster?

I cannot believe the reasoning behind reducing McSweeneys sentence. He is a violent predator who roamed the streets searching for a victim and attacked a complete stranger with such horrific force that she lost consciousness quickly. He should not be rewarded for that, he should be locked up forever. He will always be a danger to women.
