I’ve been reading along but too horrified to post but something just crossed my mind and I’m not sure if it’s been covered. Has it been clarified if Preston suffered with reflux while he was with his foster family? Only because normally by 10m he’d have almost grown out of it, if not completely grown out of it during weaning.
I’m just wondering whether rather than reflux, something was actually regularly triggering his gag reflex and causing the vomit (rather than actual reflux). I suspect that was the reason for the vomit on the day he died too 😔

This case is truly heartbreaking. Whenever you think it can’t get any worse it just does.

I would push back on this theory that they actually removed semen from his throat because having been part of a non accidental injury court case myself (as an expert witness) because as soon as the police were called and arrived that resus bay is a crime scene and the police will seize everything including the suction container so if it contained semen you would know about it by now in trial. Also as an anaesthetist who is called to a paediatric cardiac arrest we know what semen vs water vs milky stomach contents look like. I don’t want to be crude but they all suction differently, and as you're looking for the chords you get to know what different fluids look like. I have suctioned so many different fluids out of the airway I couldn’t count on my hands but I can tell you if I’m looking at seminal fluid, vomit or water
Thanks for covering this, great explanation. However , if this was tested (and not semen, because it would have been disclosed). Why haven't they said what it is? They must know. Especially from a defence point of view, because this shuts down the inference of what 'it could have been' (semen)

If I was a friend or relative of these monsters, and had children, I would be absolutely terrified. I'd be remembering and analysing back to every moment they were in my child's presence. I'd be feeling sick over any photo that id sent them and what they had done with it.....hasn't JV got a sister with little ones?!! It's unthinkable really. I bet there's a lot of people who have been feeling sick to their stomach about any contact they've had with their child. I wonder how all the parents are feeling from JVs school? Because his crimes are so heinous that like someone else said, you do wonder if he's done this before in some capacity.

If it isn’t presented by the prosecution as having been found then I believe in cross the defence could ask the question of the relevant party or they could call their own witness and ask was it looked for / was it found and that person could confirm no. It wouldn’t form part of prosecution opening statements if it wasn’t found and we are yet to hear the defense case.

Also I think this is maybe whey they haven’t charged the men with oral grape. Assault by penetration does not cover the mouth. So they are not being charged with a specific offence related to the mouth.

I don't want this to come across as rude or policing the thread, but just a caution over using the term oral sex to describe the abuse, as it is allegedly oral grape rather than any consensual practice. I know there's nothing behind people here using that term, but just feel passionately about making sure the right terminology for what these two (allegedly) did to this precious boy.

Option 2 is worse though. In prisons, sex offenders view their trial documentation as a commodity for giving to others, who get sexual gratification from reading the crimes committed. Trial judge reports tend to br very descriptive, including pathological findings etc so is used as a form of sexual abuse material in prison. I'm hoping he doesn't know that but it is an unfortunate reality of how depraved these minds can be
I just wanted to clarify as ‘oral sex ‘ was written in my original post. I was not describing what they subjected Preston to as that - it is oral grape, there is zero doubt about that. I referenced purely to attempt to describe why I thought the bruises were important (whilst describing the most disgusting thing I’ve ever written) and had made me think what I thought. I apologise if it came across as me trying to minimise what they did to him, it wasn’t the intention, at all.

I agree with your option two. Maybe he isn’t aware but I think there is something to be said for doing this for others to get a kick out of reading the details, including himself and his partner.

When i read about his reflux, it reminded me of my eldest. He had awful reflux. It didn't seem to cause him any pain at all, it was what they call traditional reflux where he would just spew up literally half or more of his milk after being winded and whenever he burped. I brought him to hospital a few times because he was failing to thrive, and they said it was the worst reflux they'd ever seen. Tried 3 different meds and none worked. Thickened formula didnt work. They suggested weaning at 12 weeks which we did and it didn't work. They eventually said it wouldn't stop until he started walking, and he did at 14 months and it stopped within weeks. He was 12 months old and spewing up his solid dinners. But one thing I'll say is he never ever choked on vomit. When my niece was born with the exact same reflux I had to reassure her parents of that, and she didn't either

My middle boy also had awful reflux, which similarly didn't really stop until he was walking. He also never choked, even when it happened when he was asleep.

Yes, his foster mother said that Preston had quite bad reflux and I'm sure I read that they had raised the cot at one end, to help relieve it.

I can see where you're coming from but I'm sure that when you put your finger into your child's mouth you are doing it as gently as you can in order to (say) remove something that s/he might choke on, or trying to check for mouth ulcers etc - and your child might not want your finger in their mouth, but s/he isn't frightened of you. There's a huge difference between what you are doing and a terrified child having a body part forced into their mouth, choking them and preventing them from breathing. Preston's nose is likely to be have been obstructed, too, further limiting his breathing. Many women are orally grape - very few have the courage or presence of mind just to bite down.

I'm not criticising your question - I'm sure you won't have been the only one thinking "Well, wouldn't he just bite?", but when you think around it, there are many reasons that he couldn't or daren't.

ETA - As a mother who has breastfed two babies, I know from experience how painful a bite can be! 😬
I totally understand what you’re saying, I can’t understand it because it’s not something I’d ever do or have experience of. Like you say how I’d put a finger in would be a very different experience with intent and reasoning. Just asking questions to understand, not to dismiss what JV has done

Thanks. Mine also had bad reflux but never choked. He grew out of it around 10m when solids started making up more of his diet than milk, which is what made me question it.
He certainly never had an episode of reflux, choked and had a subsequent chest infection which is what makes me question whether it was continued reflux or something else making him gag/sick.

I wonder what will happen to Varleys mum, partner and sisters after this… there’s no way people will look at them the same. I hope this trial becomes as big as the Arthur Labinjo Hughes case. There’s abusing a child but SA a baby?? That should hit waves through the country surely.
I think they would have been prepared for this ,. probably long moved out of Blackpool and same for John's family. Their lives will never be the same and I bet they question every interaction those two had with their kids as well.
The case has already gone viral anyway I've seen it covered in America with that awful AI image of the two with the baby

I think JV is so super manipulative that he will have probably convinced everyone he is being stitched up and now they are listening to the evidence with horror.

Apparently all of Jamie's brothers and sisters have been in court supporting him 🤮🤮 the sister with the twins who gave him sleep training advice and said his thoughts of harming Preston were normal gives me very bad vibes

Classic case of denial being the easier option. Denying your brother’s an absolute monster is much easier than accepting it’s a reality.

The fact she takes money off parents to give sleep training advice (presumably along the lines of: this baby is manipulating you and you need to leave them to cry until they learn to settle by themselves) gives me bad vibes too.

You just reminded me that I saw a comment on Facebook saying that JV's brother is high up in the police 😲
Also, some comments from three or four ex pupils saying that they had always thought JV was a wrong un.

Although, to give them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they did not know the details until now? I knew someone who went to court in support of her Dad who has been accused of SA as naturally she just couldn't see her Dad being guilty of it and thought it must have been a mistake. She learnt at the same time as the jury about what he had actually done and was utterly horrified. She no longer has a relationship with him but sat through the rest of the case because she wanted to know exactly who her Dad really was.

I’d never have anything to do with my brother again if I found out he’d done something like this. Absolutely disgusting and the evidence is damning. If they’re still speaking to him after this trial then there is something seriously wrong with them too.
