I'd also drawn the same conclusion as other posters about how the head and bruising to the face happened and it makes me feel sick that my brain can even consider it. I keep saying depraved about these two men but this really is depraved behaviour. I also fear that there will be images shared on the dark web or out there the police cannot find.

That poor little lad. He was never a real human being to them

I wonder if we will see video interview of JMF, the 2 that have been released so far from JF is just shocking the first one acting all upset and the second really sure of himself annoyed that hes even being asked these questions the huffing and puffing thinking he can out do experts! Its like 2 completely different people like he purposely had a makeover for all this ! Interesting to see JMF account of all this and when he gets questioned.

I do understand that. I guess I’m thinking about it from my own innocent perspective, when I try and put my finger in my little one’s mouth for teething gel, I get chomped!
Like many others I’m finding it hard to read what happened, but I do believe justice will be served against these animals.
I can see where you're coming from but I'm sure that when you put your finger into your child's mouth you are doing it as gently as you can in order to (say) remove something that s/he might choke on, or trying to check for mouth ulcers etc - and your child might not want your finger in their mouth, but s/he isn't frightened of you. There's a huge difference between what you are doing and a terrified child having a body part forced into their mouth, choking them and preventing them from breathing. Preston's nose is likely to be have been obstructed, too, further limiting his breathing. Many women are orally grape - very few have the courage or presence of mind just to bite down.

I'm not criticising your question - I'm sure you won't have been the only one thinking "Well, wouldn't he just bite?", but when you think around it, there are many reasons that he couldn't or daren't.

ETA - As a mother who has breastfed two babies, I know from experience how painful a bite can be! 😬

On the Trial podcast it was said JMF didn’t answer police questions, he just prepared a statement with the details we’ve already heard.

Could that really be all the police got out of him?

Poor preston, the fact they had to apologise to the neibours for the crying aswell if only they knew the reason behind the crying
I’m sure it said on the podcast the crying was from the start and the two of them even went over to “explain”. Those people will be haunted by the if onlys for the rest of their days.

I’m sure that even if Preston had thought to or been physically able to bite down, the two large adult males that brutalised him unconscious, tore him, covered him in bruises, perforated his bowel, broke his arm and let him suffer till his dying breath would have dished out a sufficient punishment to stop him from doing it again.

I think its dawning on more and more people exactly how that little beautiful baby was suffocated to death from a series of increasingly violent assaults that culminated in him dying. Its beyond horror.

I really wish that same death on them. For perhaps the same percentage of their lives they inflicted on Preston.
Agree!! They deserve to feel 1000 times over how that innocent baby felt: scared, alone, traumatised and helpless. They don’t deserve death (yet). They deserve a lifetime of misery.

They deserve one of their new cell mates to chop off their wicks’ with a mouldy blunt weapon and then another who gouges their eyes and their tongues out. They don’t get an easy way out but have to just ‘exist’ in a limbo of torment and pain and infections and loneliness and slow madness. And the occasional beating.

JV at least could be looking at a whole life order surely?
We can only hope. BUT I think he may escape one and instead get the longest possible sentence other than WLO. He deserves to go through what Preston had to every day for the rest of his life.

I hope the entire country - in fact the world - is on alert for him if he ever does get out.

I want both of them looking over their shoulders every day, in prison. or out, for the rest of their foul, fetid, disgusting lives.

because HOW can they plead not guilty with this level of evidence

I don't necessarily disagree with you but I also think that JV's extreme narcissism also plays a part: he clearly thinks he can pull the wool over anybody's eyes. And let's face it, he has up until now.

I don't want this to come across as rude or policing the thread, but just a caution over using the term oral sex to describe the abuse, as it is allegedly oral grape rather than any consensual practice. I know there's nothing behind people here using that term, but just feel passionately about making sure the right terminology for what these two (allegedly) did to this precious boy.

Another horrendous thought I've had, is that pleading not guilty might be for one of two reasons. 1, JV does obviously have narcissistic traits and may genuinely think that he'd done enough to hide his wrongdoing. Option 2 is worse though. In prisons, sex offenders view their trial documentation as a commodity for giving to others, who get sexual gratification from reading the crimes committed. Trial judge reports tend to br very descriptive, including pathological findings etc so is used as a form of sexual abuse material in prison. I'm hoping he doesn't know that but it is an unfortunate reality of how depraved these minds can be

“But Dr Armour dismissed this as a possibility. She told the court there needed to be a 'reason' for Preston being sick and pointed out that even the pathologist instructed by Varley did not disagree with her and had 'no issue' with acute upper airway obstruction as the cause of death.”

“Mr Johnson also questioned whether a bruise, seen on a photograph of Preston naked in a paddling pool, could have been caused by him falling on a cup or a toy.

But Dr Armour disagreed and again confirmed that there had been no disagreement between herself and the defence pathologist that the bruise was a human bite mark.”

Even the defence pathologist agrees with Dr Armour. The pathologist instructed on behalf of Varley. Disgusting piece of specimen.

I wonder what will happen to Varleys mum, partner and sisters after this… there’s no way people will look at them the same. I hope this trial becomes as big as the Arthur Labinjo Hughes case. There’s abusing a child but SA a baby?? That should hit waves through the country surely.

I guessed the defence would try and say aspiration, it could have been a minute possibility given that Preston had tummy troubles with milk allergy and reflux. He was probably sick more than some babies and potentially inhaled some of his own vomit. The pathologist was brilliant and didn’t give an inch. Also with the bite mark being caused by a toy “show me the toy”- it doesn’t exist. She was fantastic. I’m inclined to think the bs drowning story will be a major headache for the defence, it was an obvious lie from the beginning. It would have been more believable to say he’d been put to bed unwell and must have vomited in his sleep. When I heard JV being interviewed he just sounded like a bad actor, putting on a tearful voice with no sincerity and kept slipping into normal voice. The police must have known straight away he was full of it.
I particularly liked when the defense said something like "if blah blah happened" and she said "you said the key word, if, but I've already stated it did not so I'm not answering" go on Dr! You magnificent woman!

I haven't seen the cot photo, thankfully, but my understanding is that they took a photo as Preston had just randomly fallen asleep like it and they thought it was funny. Now my kids have fallen asleep in a stupid uncomfortable way, and I might smile to myself and then just move them into a better position but it wouldnt occur to me photograph them. It's usually dark, you're not going to get a good image and you know they are uncomfortable. All this stuff that they thought was oh so hilarious really isn't. At best it's cruel and uncaring and at worst it's... Well.

Personally the nail in the coffin for me is the pathologist saying they could see bruising In his throat as my best friend is a forensic odontologist and he’s told me as have my dentist friends that they can tell if you’ve given oral (consensual or not) because they can see petechial haemorrhaging or bruising depending how long the session was and how violent the person getting the oral is. As it’s very clearly different between normal oral presentation.

I personally think that’s what she’s referring to in her evidence.

They found a milky fluid in his stomach tht wasnt sick iirc
I would push back on this theory that they actually removed semen from his throat because having been part of a non accidental injury court case myself (as an expert witness) because as soon as the police were called and arrived that resus bay is a crime scene and the police will seize everything including the suction container so if it contained semen you would know about it by now in trial. Also as an anaesthetist who is called to a paediatric cardiac arrest we know what semen vs water vs milky stomach contents look like. I don’t want to be crude but they all suction differently, and as you're looking for the chords you get to know what different fluids look like. I have suctioned so many different fluids out of the airway I couldn’t count on my hands but I can tell you if I’m looking at seminal fluid, vomit or water

I agree they would have tested everything and if semen had been found I think they would have said so by now.
