My ex FIL SA his granddaughter (my stepdaughter) when she was about 11. The CPS decided not to pursue it because of lack of evidence so he got away with it. However I never spoke to him again or went to his house, and neither did my ex.
He later died of mesothelioma which is an asbestos related cancer of the lung, quite a nasty death I think and no more than he deserved.

The evidence is just horrific, I don’t know how the defence are going to try and explain the internal bruising now it’s been confirmed that it wasn’t due to the life saving efforts. And all the videos they took of him in distress. That poor, sweet little boy 😞

Dr Gifford says there were videos showing him in severe respiratory distress on separate occasions, one as early as May 15th. They must have started on the poor little mite almost as soon as he arrived at their house 😢

So these are identified dates of breathing issues/unconcious/very unwell - in chronological order

25 May - contact with health services
30 May - contact with health services
5 June - text from JV to colleague reporting two seizures
15 June - text from JV to JMF reporting seizure
23 July - the still images over bar of cot
27 July - video 1hr 45mins before death

and this is just devastating

Just when you think things cant get any worse.... I dont know if i can even carry on reading ! Poor baby boy the nation is heartbroken 💔
If I was the jury I would just stand up and refuse to carry on and say these are guilty as he'll throw away the keys! They are going to be subject to a lot of trauma following this. My heart is literally breaking!

Have they told us whose devices they were recorded on and who was home when these have been photoed / recorded ? I remeber them stating they believed it started when John went back to work

I can't help but wonder how many other children are suffering like this - especially since the surge in surrogacy.

This confirms it for me that JV at the least went into this adoption deliberately wanting a baby to abuse. You just don't go from nothing to abusing a baby until they are nearly dead multiple times that quickly. You just don't. Now that comment about being delighted they got a baby boy even more horrific.

As everyone says, this trial is just breaking my heart so much more than anything else I've seen. That poor boy was preyed on from the moment he arrived and god knows how many times they subjected him to it in that time. No wonder on one of the SW visits he looked withdrawn and rejected when he had been a happy boy. Why did that and the hospital visits not ring massive alarm bells?

I just want to scoop him up and protect him and then it dawns on you that you can't because JV killed him.

They are all recorded/taken on JVs phone but JV sent some to JMF and they also have evidence JMF was at home at the time JV took some of them (and the worst one too - the slumped over the bars).

Maybe it’s just the messages that started when JMF went back to work? Also, horrible to think it but maybe JV didn’t do as extreme abuse when they were both there because he had someone else to do things to, iyswim. I feel grubby even going over it in my mind.

Has any of the reporting mentioned how JV and JMF have reacted to hearing the pathology report being discussed in court? Are they distressed or upset by what they're hearing? Or just impassive to this catalogue of horrors. Not that I'd believe their tears anyway but it's quite something to hear about a baby being injured and dying of those injuries and not react. Especially if you maintain that it was an accidental death and their injuries were from resuscitation attempts

I’ve never been a children’s nurse but you cover the basics during general training. It was made clear that children and especially babies can go downhill very quickly. You don’t wait for them to stop breathing to start resuscitation. Also they are more prone to respiratory arrest precipitating cardiac arrest whereas with adults it’s generally the other way round. So breathing difficulties in a child must be addressed quickly. These just left him to make his own recovery after being so close to death. When JV saying about the “drowning” thinking oh it could have been so much worse, how many times has he watched him struggling so badly that he thought he would just recover this time. Filthy subhuman beasts the pair of them.

It's one thing to SA a tiny baby but sounds like there was kinky breath play involved with the timer open on his phone and recording the difficulties breathing after almost suffocating the poor baby. This is almost beyond normal human comprehension. I don't know how little Preston didn't already have brain damage from restricting his oxygen so much

This has been my view for a while, as soon as the timer was mentioned in the reporting. I know when I first mentioned it, people said that it wasn’t common for people to know how long a person can go without oxygen so I though okay, maybe I’ve put 2+2 together and got 5. But then when you add in the extreme pornography charges that are not covered in this trial, my opinion is that these two potentially took part and watched ‘violent/extreme’ sex acts, including breath play it is likely they would know the timings of what is considered ‘safe’ and ‘not safe’.
So I do think the attacks were being timed. Likely to try and allow for him to recover…but like any abuser, JV escalated.

There is a wider conversation here which I don’t think is appropriate to have as part of this trial. This isn’t ’breath play’ it’s sexual abuse of a minor. I’ve been severely educated after having very naive views/opinions on this particular ‘kink’ (largely formed by those in the community). I’m big enough to admit my own views were previously uneducated and I’ve since changed them. There is no such thing as safe breath play. It’s extremely dangerous

This is exactly how I feel, the abuse was pre planned.
I see photos of his beautiful happy face, so innocent and trusting.
And then it hits me again, the disgusting things they did to him.
I feel so sick about it all, why didn’t anyone save this poor little baby

Judging by JV’s demeanour during his police interview, I imagine he feels no distress whatsoever. I don’t think he feels guilt or that he has done anything wrong. His histrionics in the hospital weren’t about sadness for Preston because he had zero compassion for Preston. It was all about him. He willingly inflicted those injuries on Preston and didn’t care.

Just an aside, and sorry if this has already been mentioned, but is JV’s defence barrister the same Nick Johnson KC who prosecuted in the LL case?

Injuries 'highly indicative of sexual trauma', jury told
Dr Gifford says she was given information from the post mortem by Dr Alison Armour and images taken from hospital at the time Preston died.
She said injuries to Preston’s pelvic organs were highly indicative of sexual trauma.
"I would expect him to look extremely unwell, in a critical condition from the time this occurred," she added.
Signs would be a child looking very unwell, with breathing in distress and possible swelling to the tummy, adds the doctor. She says there would also be vomiting, diarrhoea and collapse resulting from the types of injuries found in Preston.

He can blame bruises on clumsiness and he can try and claim vomit caused “breathing difficulties” and tubes caused the throat bruising but what on earth can he blame this on? Vile.

I just can’t understand why they have plead not guilty.

They must know the evidence and expert opinions are damning. Preston’s body is a catalogue of evidence of what they did to him.

Is it part of the thrill listening to it all again in court? Or do they genuinely think they have a chance of being free and people will believe they are innocent?

Will the defence lawyer every try to convince their client to plead guilty during the trial if the evidence is too overwhelming or would they just allow to see it through?
