Meh. The nasal decongestion is ruining me and I’m snottering my way through the day and at night. Thought I’d pop into a pharmacy to see if there was anything I could take. I mean anything. One of those Vicks things you honk up your nose even. Tried Boots, huge queues. Went to a small local pharmacy instead, empty. Explain to girl on the counter and she asks me to fill in the Pharmacy First form, sure thing. She then shouts about how I’m pregnant (there are now people in the pharmacy, this is my work city and nobody knows I’m pregnant) and I have a ‘blocked nose’. She goes back to see the pharmacist who can’t even be bothered to see me so sends her back with the message of ‘stick your head over a bowl of hot water. Have a hot shower’. I feel like a complete fool and walk out about to cry. Google suggests I could stick one of those Vicks things up my hooter but I was scared to do anything without asking a pharmacist and the pharmacist was a fool who couldn’t be arsed to come talk to me themselves.
I think my hormones might be ramping up, haha. I had a complete outage last night over my inability to flip an omelette in a pan. 🤣 add in insomnia and my snotters and I’m a total mess.
I have stuck a Vicks inhaler up my nose many times during this pregnancy - go for it!

Having an early private scan was a benefit for me! I don’t even have a date for the NHS scan and they said there’s a massive backlog where I am and I might need to chase them up. So exhausting!
I would’ve liked to but the window to the womb near us is like £100 for a scan and it’s just such a heavy month for us that we couldn’t afford it. I have to say that the hospital we registered with have been pretty on it - I submitted the self referral on a Sunday and by Monday afternoon I had my midwife appointment and first scan booked. I was so shocked.

Eeek that’s super expensive, I think I paid £75 to Ultrasound Direct as they were most local anyway. My appointment set up was pretty quick but the midwives didn’t hold out much hope either for the sonographers or for the peri-natal mental health team (student midwife considered referring me based on history, named midwife said don’t bother because their referral criteria is so tight the team don’t seem to actually see anyone!).

Got a horrible dry, tickly cough but it’s also a bit chesty. Coughing so hard I feel like my throat (and fan 😅) might turn inside out. But to make it oh so much worse, my heartburn is absolutely awful and I’m basically violently coughing up stomach acid.
Got some manuka honey and lemon for the cough, bucket loads of gaviscon for the heartburn (made worse by the lemon but needs must!)

This pregnancy hasn’t been anywhere near as bad as last time but at 32 weeks, this sucks

Can’t recommend going to the docs for some omeprazole. It’s saved me in both pregnancies from heartburn just like yours x

Tip for anyone giving birth: if you get warm easily take a fan to hospital. Swear half the budget for the nhs goes on heating the maternity ward 😂 it’s boiling in there. I was sweating and they kept getting on at me to put a woolly hat on poor babies head 🙈

Totally agree. I was drenched in sweat. I also developed a temperature during labour (surprise surprise) which meant I had to stay two extra days while they gave me IV antibiotics 🤣 obviously could have been dangerous but I swear the heating being on so high was 90% of the issue! Similarly trying to breastfeed and getting so stressed and anxious whilst dripping with sweat in the hot room 😖😖 god I still have trauma from it all

Mine was so hot too. I remember when I got there thinking I'd be cold at night cause there was just a thin sheet on the bed. It was so hot, I had to take it off. Luckily I was near a window so could open it a tiny bit during the day. I didn't even put on the fluffy socks I took with me haha

With my first - I asked for a fan because the person opposite me kept closing the window next to me. I was filled with post partum rage and on top of that had so many snorers on the ward. Sounding like actual freight trains. I think you should have to disclose if you snore and they can all be put on a ward with eachother.

Ours has fans by each bed but they looked so dusty and gross 🤢 no idea if they worked !

I need to make a note to my future self about what clothes to pack if we ever have a third baby.. because most of what I took to wear after birth was just too thick. Grim but I stayed in the same thin oversized tshirt for 2 days until I went home because everything else I had packed was just far too thick 😭

And same about the hat!! I kept taking it off baby and then when they’d come round to do his checks they’d wrap him back up in the cot and put it back on him ! 😂

I will 100% pack a fan this time too! A lovely midwife snuck me one but told me to keep the curtains closed as she didn’t have enough for everyone! I’m also going to pack earplugs this time. No snorers but there was a hysterical woman opposite me that couldn’t believe her mum wasn’t allowed to stay in overnight with her. Every time the midwife came round she wanted them to change a nappy or feed the baby. The midwife was basically like ‘no- you need to do it love’

The post natal ward is honestly hell. I was in a bay with 5 others and one poor baby was under the blue light so screamed constantly and his mum was crying 24/7. I self discharged 🤣

I pray I don't have to stay overnight. I can't deal with snorers, screaming and people being hysterical. I'd do a murder.

Good point! I don’t think it matters, my preference is a healthy bubba! But if the test got it wrong and we had picked a full name and everything that could be a bit awkward!
I’ve done it and it’s 99% accurate if you do it properly. Properly means you are far along enough AND have completed the test in the correct conditions.

If it’s a girl result - you can be pretty certain it’s a girl as long it’s been done at correct gestation.

If it’s a boy result- this could be incorrect if male DNA has interfered with the sample. You need to make sure your hands are clean, with a clean towel and prior to this wipe down your testing area meticulously with alcohol. Any residue from your partner or even male pets can contaminate the test with XY chromosomes.

If you want sneakpeak but want to be ‘sure’ make sure you have it done well past 8 weeks to ensure there is enough foetal DNA to test, as if you are too early this might mean the result comes out as GIRL as no XY chromosomes will be detected. Also you may want to opt for it being done at a clinic (window to the womb and even some Superdrug clinic branches do it for about £130 instead of £80 for the home kit) where they will ensure everything is clean.

Just for balance, I had a fairly positive experience after birth for my overnight stay. I was in a two bed room and me and the other lady actually ended up chatting a bit once our husbands left - we took it in turns to go and fill both our water jugs up and she lent me her breastfeeding pillow while baby skates was refusing to latch.

Looking for a little reassurance.

Had my bloods screening for Down's syndrome, Edwards' syndrome and Patau's syndrome on Friday the 14th.

Scan was all good. Hospital said I would hear by today (Wednesday) if I am high risk. I am relieved 😌 as I haven’t had a phone call so can I relax? Or would you wait one more day just to be sure?!

im 41 so ancient and I’ve been reminded so many times by the hospital that im geriatric 😣 im more than aware of the risks.

For those in the low risk category when did everyone receive their letter?

Thank you 💓

Hey!

I had a phone call for some other bloods and they said if you hadn’t heard in 3 days all is ok. My letter I received 7 working days after the test

I’m almost 39 so also riskier. I got my letter 2 weeks later showing low risk. Low risk but still much higher than first baby when I was 36 which I presume is down to age

I found the post natal ward more traumatic than the 29 hr labour and emergency forceps delivery. If I had my time again I would self discharge too. My baby was crying a lot and I couldn't get him to settle or feed. I ended up just sitting on the bed crying with him. Midwives didn't offer any real help at all.
