Midwife appointment with the intention of cancelling a section I was in no fit state to agree to didn’t go as planned today. The diabetic midwife seemed really confused as to why I ended up in front of her and said all my sugar levels seemed fine and at first seemed on my side about batting things back to the consultant to get her to “wind her neck in”. She was also frustrated that the consultant told me to take my iron with orange juice instead of with the actual fruit as I’ve basically been drinking liquid sugar which may have contributed to baby’s sudden growth.
But then between her and the midwife I saw last week it very much felt like an undertone of if I don’t take their advice then I’m to blame if things go wrong and that I should make the sensible choice. They still cannot tell me why, in their eyes, I need to have an early section at 38+3 just because she’s big and breech. I’ve not been presented with any risks for leaving her alone beyond that. They were supposed to ring me back today with another scan booked in before the planned section but shock horror I’ve heard nothing. I honestly feel like even if they get me in for another scan they’ll leave it to the last minute and claim it’s safer to do 38+3 because they can’t find space for me later on.
Everything in my guts is telling me this planned section next week is wrong. The sheer stress and psychological damage this pressure and undertone of me causing my baby girl harm is honestly ruining the end of my pregnancy and making it feel difficult to connect to my baby. I’m so sad because my care has been lovely so far but all of a sudden because she doesn’t fit their average growth chart anymore she has to come out early? I mentioned that the NICE guidelines say I can carry on until 40+6 but I felt like it fell on deaf ears. I said that this would’ve all been fine if I hadn’t had growth scans and the midwife said then anything underlying could be missed. Isn’t that the risk they take anyway with typical pregnancies not requiring growth scans? They also keep reminding me how special and wanted my baby is after so many losses… like I’m the one that needs reminding? Feels like they’re using the situation as cannon fodder to make me give in to them.
I just feel so worn down by them.
I’m sorry you’re being made to feel like this.
The way it reads is that because they think she’s big and she’s breech, they are worried you’ll go naturally early and if you go fast you’ll have to have an emergency CS or deliver vaginally breech which they consider, on balance, more risky. Is that right?
It sounds like they’re not giving you all of information and being a bit “because I said so, you don’t need to know why” but ultimately, if she doesn’t turn sadly the birth you wanted and envisaged won’t be possible so even if they were lovey that’s hard to take.
Sometime it can help to arrange your thoughts when stressed, to break it down on paper. I’m not “questioning” you to judge, stress or put pressure on, but to try to help think of it as though you’re taking to friends (us) rather than justifying yourself to professionals. You don’t have to actually reply of course…
What is making you want to wait? Is it that you think she may not be that large or that she may yet turn so you won’t need the c-section full stop?
Have they explained what breech position she is in currently and if your placenta position is any issue?
If she is the predicted size, can they tell you the chance she will turn and if she isn’t, what are the chances then?
Do you have additional risk factors that make your specific case different to someone else’s. Can they explain them?
Would you rather try for a vaginal birth if she remains breech? If not, is 40 weeks your max?
The only things I will say from a personal level is while they way overestimated 2nd baby, 1st baby they had spot on size wise. Urgent emergency c-sections aren’t nice at all. Anything you can do now to reconcile that you mightn’t get your birth preferences will help you in the days after, that hormone drop can do strange things.
And most importantly, if you’re struggling to connect to baby right now that has absolutely no bearing on how you’ll feel when she is here. None, not a single bit. Annnnnddddd even if she arrives in a way that makes you sad and disconnected, it doesn’t say anything about how you’ll feel the next day, or the day after that… Do not worry about that bit at all.
Lots of love to you x
