Has anyone had a high heart rate in pregnancy? Mine was high at last midwife appt, and so was babies, so I went for monitoring. They said everything was fine but it’s been high a fair few times since then and I’m unsure if I should be making them aware?

Out of curiosity what is yours? Mine went up as my pregnancy went on but nobody bothered. Baby’s heart rate was quite high during one of the scans but she was just an active little bean. Then my heart rate was sky high after the birth which was due to a UTI- could you have a UTI?

So on the day they sent me for monitoring it was 109. Babies was 166, but they said it was likely high as mine was high and just told me to stay hydrated 🤷🏼‍♀️ My Apple Watch today has peaked at 120. I don’t think it’s a UTI as they tested my urine twice but who knows at this point! I feel ok, and baby is moving ok, I just don’t know if it’s something you just ignore🫠

Heart rate does go up during pregnancy and 166 for baby isnt overly high. My babies have always sat between 150 and 160.
So may be why they don't seem too worried.

Have you got a midwife appointment again soon you can mention your worry?

That’s not beyond the realms of normal levels so I wouldn’t worry too much if the monitoring is fine. It’s probably the heat. My babies heart rate was 160/170ish the whole pregnancy (apparently it’s an old wives tale that it’s a girl, which she was!)

IIRC towards the end of my pregnancy I got to 112, the midwife said it was a tad high but I had basically run from the car park, but she didn’t say anything else. The baby’s got to around 160 too but she was monitored and just super active. I had the UTI after birth and they were very concerned when my pulse went to 120, but I kept saying it had been high beforehand but they didn’t seem to care 🤷‍♀️ if you’re worried def ring triage, I started pregnancy with a pulse of 70 which then got to 110 by the end but I put it down to my extra weight gain, stress on my body and anxiety.

That makes me feel better knowing it’s not just me! I wouldn’t have questioned the heart rates myself, but them telling me that purely due to the heart rates they wanted me monitored has since made me think i need to worry about them🤪 my midwife’s reaction versus the midwife that monitored me couldn’t have been more different though haha so wasn’t sure if mine is just cautious or the other one was super lax!

mine also has been very high compared to pre-pregnancy (no monitoring here though, touch wood.) hopefully it settles your mind a little bit! x

Much earlier than you guys but I got this update on my Apple Watch which times in with the exact day that we conceived, which is crazy to me. My body knew long before I did! So fascinating.

OK having a bit of am Am I the mole situation with husband and feel like an outside opinion would be good.

We're quite close with his parents- I'm still learning to drive and he can't drive so the baseline is after the birth, they'll pick us up. But... I would really like to be at home alone with just the three of us after the birth, for at least 2 days. I'm not a social person at the best of times, let alone when I'm tired, hormonal and probably in pain. So I suggested we put a 1 week hold on people meeting the baby- everyone, not just his parents.

He does not agree. He thinks it's controlling and setting us all off on the wrong foot and they'd be "helpful" (with what??). I think we are perfectly capable of caring for a new born and resent this idea that we'll need help. So, he doesn't agree at all. Thinks its a terrible idea, despite me telling him that nobody is entitled to our child. He still thinks it's weird and sets everything off badly.

I've tried to get him to see it from the view of I'll have just given birth, I'll be exhausted, in pain & hormonal and learning to breastfeed. I won't want people around loitering and asking loads of questions about how we're doing and if we want them to take the baby for a while. I just don't want it. He doesn't get it and got quite angry at the idea of putting a "ban" as he calls it on and said its a very abnormal thing to want and "none of his friends did it that way". I'm at a loss, I'm going to have to concede because I don't know how else to try and make him see my point but it's making me feel like tit. Anyone in a similar boat?

Maybe he doesn’t realise that a 1-2 day old baby isn’t going to be able to be “taken off by them” for a while to give you respite. Baby will be on you and screaming and crying, you’ll have your boobs out most of the time! Can’t he respect you wouldn’t want his parents there for that?
---
Could you compromise and have them stay for an hour or two to meet the baby and then ask them to leave you alone to settle?

I've tried explaining this but he just doesn't get it. To be fair he didn't say the taken off by them thing, that was assumed by me because I'm not really sure what else he thinks they'd help with? He just doesn't want to appear weird or controlling but it's not controlling to want to be alone for a few days. Not a single person on this planet is entitled to our child. I'm at a complete loss 🤷🏼‍♀️

I could, but honestly I'm such a horrendous feminist that I don't really see why I, the person who is giving birth, should compromise? I'll end up compromising for an hour or two, I imagine. But I'm not happy about it.

Can you get a taxi home instead? I assume you can rig the taxi with a baby seat. They’re going to want to stay and look at the baby for a while, so maybe alleviate the need for them to pick you up?

I've already put irons in this fire with another friend who is not at all baby interested. Definitely a good plan. My other plan is to just talk to my mother in law and be honest.

I think if you've got a good relationship with your MIL, she may understand from a female point of view.
We didn't have an visitors for the first 4 or 5 days. Especially with my 2nd and 3rd as we wanted to get the kids adjusted first. But my Mum brought us home from the hospital as my partner doesn't drive and I made I just told her we weren't having any visitors for a while just to get everyone asjusted and she understood. Where as from my Sister when I told her first I got "Well good luck telling Mum." 🙄

It did also make it easier that my partners Mum had always said she wont visit until we say so so we can asjust

I told my midwife we were planning to not have any visitors in hospital or at home for the first few days and she said "good, I was going to recommend that, you need time to bond with baby without distractions and baby needs time to get used to his environment without outside smells/germs". Can you say it's been advised to not have visitors for the sake of a brand new baby with low immunity, in the hope people will do it for the baby's sake if not yours? It's not weird to not want visitors immediately, lots of people do that now! And you can send photos and do video calls if you feel up to it, so people don't feel excluded. I'm not sure why your husband thinks doing that would be controlling - is there more to unpack there?

I don't think there's more to unpack - I think he's just worried about upsetting his parents. His dad is a bit of a passive aggressive character and he wants to share the happy moment with his family. My sister, who we both dislike, uses her kids as a bargaining chip. Ex: can't loan her money, can't see niece and nephew. I think he's worried about becoming like that. I get his concerns, I just wish he'd see it from the POV of his pregnant wife haha

We didn’t have any help and I would have killed for some to be honest. It’s surprising how consuming a little person is in those first days, it’s nice if you have people who will come and make you a meal or a cuppa, do some housework to keep you ticking over and make you feel looked after. But, if you don’t really want anyone around you then just say you don’t and get a taxi home instead.

We've compromised and have decided on a quick hello before we settle with just the three of us. I think it just wounded me that he wouldn't consider how I'd be feeling at the time and I felt a little bit like he was being too focused on his parents and making them happy. Probably a hormone thing 😂 it's all resolved and okay now.

It’s completely up to you but I will say if you end up having to have an emergency c section, your partner will need to be prepared to do literally everything bar feed/hold the baby. I say this from experience, but if we didn’t have help immediately after I wouldn’t have been able to take the baby downstairs, I had to wait for my mum or my partner to be there/get up. Could you say to them that you plan on just having you three the first week unless you call on them?
Sorry if my first sentence seems a bit abrupt but it was such a shock to my system when I had one, I was so ill prepared and didn’t realise how I literally shouldn’t have/couldn’t do anything (and unfortunately paid the price in follow up complications by trying to do too much).
