Sorry to change the topic of conversation, but has anyone had a water birth? I was adamant I was having one last time and couldn’t due to having to be induced and other complications along the way, but I did initially labour in the bath on the ward and felt a million times better being submerged in warm water - both pain and relaxation wise. Anyway, I am intending on having one this time round however every time I mention it to someone, they pull their face / list the problems with it / tell me horror stories / are just generally very negative (it always seems to be ‘my friend of a friend had one and … ‘ and not themselves typically 🙄) . Does anyone have any first hand experience please?
I planned to with my first but it didn't work out (She was born 49 minutes after getting to the hospital!) but I've had friends who have and they've said it was amazing. Friend of mine actually had a home water birth and is planning her next! Unfortunately you only really hear about the horror stories. If it makes you feel comfortable and relaxed, go for it! I want to this time - as long as this bub doesn't plan on being as speedy as their sister!

Just found out I’m pregnant 😲 typing this doesn’t seem real?? I’ve always wanted to be a mum and so excited to be pregnant but I still refuse to believe I’m any older than 18 let alone responsible for a child 😂

found out this morning and have been manically researching since, told my partner and the lazy lump just went back to sleep 😂 honestly don’t think it registered with him so we’ll see what he says when he wakes up hahah

No first-hand experience but I've been discussing birth options with friends and two of them had water births and said how positive they were - for one of my friends it was her third labour but first water birth and she said it was her perfect birth experience after two trickier births. How annoying that people keep sticking their noses in and sharing negative crap with you - if it's want you want then discuss it with your midwife and go for it 🙂

I had a water birth and I had a great labour. It was quick so they had to full the bath quickly, but it was nice and warm and I felt more relaxed as soon as I got in, but it didn't slow down labour either.

I've not really heard any negative stories about a water birth!

Has anyone had cramps at 14 weeks? Lasting ages, any advice on how to ease it a little?

Very similar to my experiences. Induced with my first, water birth with my second. It was so different to my first and would 100% recommend it to anyone who is able to have one. I was lucky that I got there and they filled it quickly as it was a very quick birth. I did get a second degree tear due to how fast he came. I was so surprised how much the warm water helped with my pain management and just how calm the whole atmosphere was it was lovely.

I've got my first midwife appointment next week 😬 is there anything I need to prepare i.e. any questions I should be asking?

I'm also interested in a water birth and all I've heard is bad things, again from people who've never had one themselves. My sister had one but I can't ask her about it yet as she doesn't know I'm pregnant 🙈

Is it your booking appointment (pre-12 weeks) or your first proper midwife appointment (after 12 weeks) as that will affect what you'll be asked/what you may want to ask 🙂

Thanks for all the comments and advice re: water births. You’ve all echoed my sentiments exactly! I’m sure it will be everything I’d hope and it’s nice to hear some positive stories! Now to cross my fingers that there’s a pool free when little one decides to make an appearance…!

Sorry, yes it's the booking appointment ☺
Like has been said, it's just medical history stuff plus they'll take your weight/height/blood pressure/urine sample/blood sample etc and let you know what happens next - the only thing you might want to ask if you haven't already is advice about supplements/existing medications you're on but they may signpost you to your GP anyway 🙂

You’ve all swayed me into looking into a water birth!

One thing I’ve found re bad stories, is that pregnancy and new baby life can be a race to the bottom, for some unfathomable reason people love to share negative opinions on literally every aspect and decision in pregnancy and with a newborn, and they love to one up each other, in a way that wouldn’t do to anyone else. It is baffling frankly but try and ignore it or you’ll second guess every choice you make haha. I’ve actually found that outside of immediate family, this group, and the new baby thread, to be the most supportive, even friends can get swept up in telling your horror stories! Anyway my point (in a long and rambling way) is that just because some people had a bad experience with a water birth, don’t let it put you off if that’s what you want to do!

I really want to try for a water birth too. Honestly, I don’t have huge preferences, just for him to be here safe! But I love being in water anyway so seems like a good choice for me.

Does anyone else get really pissed off with constant comments on their bump/weight? My mum is the absolute worst! Literally every time I see her ‘wow, you’re so huge/you’re massive/can you even fit behind the steering wheel?’

I wouldn’t mind but a) I had an eating disorder through my teens and 20s so it’s sensitive for me anyway and as a result I am on the smaller side and b) I was weighed at my 28 week appointment and have gained 5kg since pre-pregnancy. I don’t know what the normal rate of weight gain is but my mum keeps saying that I’ll be bigger than her (she gained over 4 stone while pregnant with me), and just over 3 stone seems quite a lot to gain in 11ish weeks!

Thanks to those who suggested a talk with my midwife about anxiety, had the appointment today & she was SO kind and understanding. Referred me to their in house birth prep group for those with severe birth anxiety & to some local support groups.
Although I’ve seen different midwives at each appointment they’ve all been so kind, I really hope it’s the same on labour ward 😅🤞🏼
He’s apparently very deep in my pelvis which she said she would be surprised if he moved out of so I hope it stays that way 😂

I’ve got crippling back pain and if it doesn’t disappear in the next 2 weeks I’m considering going in the water, I don’t want to have an actual water birth but I think to help manage the pain it might help initially.

Yep! A month ago someone told me it looks like there’s triplets in there which I found incredibly rude. I’ve not weighed since I was 12 weeks and I had already put a stone on then but when I was younger I was quite big so have got hang ups about my weight too. I’m trying to just think that everyone is different and when I feel comfortable post partum I’ll get back into exercising etc.

Yes, I hate it, I got it last time and I'm getting it again with this pregnancy. I'm small, always have been and assume always will be as I've always actually struggled to gain weight. "Starving yourself, eh?" "Don't want the baby to go hungry!" "You should be eating for two". First time round I actively ignored, this time? Well, a few people have had a piece of my mind. As long as you and baby are healthy, everyone else can butt out!

I swear it’s jealousy/insecurity based. I was small with my first, thanks to crippling morning sickness, and the people who commented on it the most were people who had put on a lot during their pregnancy and were probably projecting. A woman on my due date happily told me I only looked 5 months pregnant which was a) not true and b) not necessary. As if being small bc you’ve vomited 10/12 times a day for 16 weeks is anything to be remotely jealous of haha.

People are weird!

Also eta - the eating for 2 is nonsense anyway, you only need 300 extra cals a day in the 3rd trimester so actually you shouldn’t be eating for 2 🙄 although equally, if you have pregnancy cravings and want to eat for 2, knock yourself out haha, I know I did once the sickness wore off 🤣

That’s awful she’s making comments like that & totally unnecessary. Everyone gains weight differently.
I hope you can remember weight doesn’t matter and as long as you feel ok & baby is doing well that’s all that matters.
I’d ask her to keep her words to herself from now on as they’re hurtful & upsetting

My mum made comments last week about how round my face was looking and that I’ve gained weight - she was trying to be sweet about it but I wasn’t impressed! Luckily my dad butted in and told her to be quiet with her comments!
I had gained almost 10kg by the 20 week mark so dress to think what I weigh now but surprisingly it all just seems to have gone to my bump! Trying hard not to worry about my weight as I am growing a human after all!! Xx

That’s always my response - I’m growing a human, he is going to get bigger each week! Having HG and being so sick I’ve been worried about him being a low birth weight so knowing he’s growing is reassuring to me, but that part of my brain that fed an eating disorder for 15+ years always gets noisy when people comment.
