Hi everyone, great thread, you guys have been so supportive!

Does anyone have any ideas please on paying back an overdraft when your salary goes into that same overdraft account? I've got two overdrafts sitting maxed out at about £3,500 in total (1,500 in one and 2,000 in another) but I'm finding that my part-time salary (£1,150 per month) and the expenses I have to pay are just not helping me chip away those overdrafts!
Unless you can increase you income significantly I'd suggest contacting step change debt charity. Or look into consolidating it in a loan, depnds on your whole situation really... definitely look into your options!! X

I would try and find a small loan with acceptable interest that has a rate you can afford, pay off the overdraft, and then pay back the loan separately as I'm sure the overdraft is costing you loads in interest and fees as well as feeling awful whenever you look into your account.

Recommend step change, wish I had kept debt free (that’s another story) but they helped me big time when my wages were a lot lower having not long left London and therefore swimming in payday loans.

Let them know you can't afford it, they should freeze the interest to help with the fees whilst you contact someone for support, as they can be so expensive. I'd contact a debt consolidation company like step change to get some advice and put a plan in place.

If there's no way you can up your income to cover the cost it'll be a bit of a cycle for a while so it best to get some proper financial advice or a loan to cover it if you can afford repayments. I took out a loan to clear my overdraft and ended up in more debt so get some professional advice.

I had this. I transferred the balances onto an interest free credit card and paid it up that way. Cancel the overdrafts at the same time though to avoid temptation to dip back into them

I keep having to set up a DD with a debt collector, but it's like every month they cancel it and then send me threatening text messages. I can't work out why because I have proof of setting up the DD and email it to them every time, but they never respond :( So annoying when every other one seems to be under control for me.

Hi all

Making good progress this year, have paid off £3k so far since January.

Sadly the company I worked for went into administration, so I lost my job. Luckily I found a job quickly after, and thanks to my redundancy pay (only statutory unfortunately) and I’ll be making another £3k payment next month. That puts me on track to be under £10k debt for the first time in years!!!

Really proud of the progress I’ve made this year, I know it will really be the year I pay it all off. I can’t wait.

Hi, can anyone on here help?

£1700 british gas bill for 6 months of usage from 2020. I paid my direct debit every month and worked 12hr shifts 6 days a week so was hardly there. The average 2 bed house uses 2500kWh over 12 months and they are charging me for around 14,000 kWh usage in 6 months on electricity alone.

Debt company are saying I owe it as it is based on an actual reading dated from after I moved out. I think I wasn’t able to submit a read when i moved out as landlord gave no access to where the meter was. I also remember trying ti contact them about a faulty meter whilst I was there.

debt company are saying I owe it and theres nothing I can do and it will be going to court.

it doesn’t take a genius to see that this is incorrect?

I've got EDF trying to charge me for a period they know the meter was pre paid. The same time period my old supplier had to refund me £180. Ombudsman has ignored all my evidence. Been waiting 3 months while it's "looked at again".

he just took my ombudsman ref number and said to wait until british gas respond.

He tried to offer a ‘one off discount of £1300’ 😐

I don’t suppose you were able to get a photograph of the meter before you left? I’m guessing when you quiered the meter it was by phone? They record their conversations so should have it on record.

I can’t stand British Gas and ended up going to the ombudsman about them. It was frustrating, but in the end they sided with me.

I’d suggest contacting them and if you have to citizens advice too. Good luck with it all 🍀

I’ve looked back defo no photo of meter just an email to estate agent who responded saying landlord does not have key for access to meter. The ‘actual reading’ is dated 3 weeks after I left so I didn’t take it.

I also have some emails to BG saying the estimated bills they were sending me were ridiculous and it must be faulty and every response said to raise it on a live chat which I remember doing but I don’t have a copy of that😡 I’ve raised it to ombudsman but no response. X

I did it! My credit card is completely paid off 🥳🤩 £3K paid in just shy of a year, when I first started it seemed impossible but I'm finally here. Take this as your sign it is going to happen for you all too. Thank you all for the support I've received throughout.

You might be able to set up an arrangement to have the overdraft reduced slightly every month on the same day your salary goes in. It doesn't have to be by much but it helps - and when you are ready you can chip away more.

Hello. Just read through this thread and it's super motivating.

I'm in over 20k of debt and have been for years. It never seems to decrease because I have reckless spending habits that I can't shake. I don't spend on myself but on my two children. We also travel a lot and I like to splash out when we do. I feel like I am wilfully blind when it comes to spending. It's hard to describe but it's like money isn't real to me. I'm 41 and I've been in debt since I was 18 so it's like normality to me. But lately I'm just feeling like I don't want it anymore. It's crippling.

I'm very lucky that I a) live in a low cost of living area b) have a lovely husband who pays most of the big bills and c) have a decent job.

My repayments are £800 a month which is just painful. I want to take action but I can't have my credit score affected as we need to remortgage at the end of the year.

Grateful for any tips.

Seems silly but a major issue for me is massive supermarket food shops then living on takeaways or impulse purchases. This week I was so happy because I actually cooked a few meals using ingredients I had. And they were really good and tasty.

I'm so ashamed of myself for getting into this mess.

Thanks for listening.
