Nurses striking

I fully support that their working conditions and pay is appalling however I do not support strikes.

We need to go back, no more needing a degree, more hands on paid training and much better pay. Free parking, on-site nurseries etc.Get rid of big bosses, paper pushers, they also need to bring back convalescent homes to make hospitals run better.

Hearing that the Scottish have reject a 11% rise is madness. Where do they think this money tree is c

Touching on the paid training and that
They should bring it back to what it was 15 years ago when I was a student nurse
NHS paid for all the university fees , you could enter on advanced diploma and qualify with that and then do a degree in house when qualified and also bring back the busary too
It is hard for students to find jobs while on training because which employers are gonna let staff take 8-12 weeks break at a time while they go out into placements

To be fair if I hadn't seen how dire things are right now in healthcare I can't say hand on heart I'd support strikes either. It does sound extreme, and when the only thing we can strike for is pay it does seem grabby in the current climate even though that's only part of the story.

Did they do the same for doctors, radiographers, physios or whoever else works in a hospital? As imo the government paying for degrees shouldn’t be a thing. They still at the end of the day chose to do it. Why should nurses get them paid and not the others who work in a hospital? Also did you have to agree to work for the NHS for so long for them to pay? Or could you leave and work private as soon as you qualified?

Sometimes there are people who pretend they want to understand when really they’re just anti supporting the most important workers in our society and don’t want to come out explicitly and say that. I’m sure that’s where you are.
It’s not my side, it’s the side of the right thing to do. I’m not a nurse or anything like.
I don’t need a 19% pay increase because I already get paid shitloads and don’t contribute anything like the value medics do.
If I didn't want to support them and was against them all I'd have no problem saying it on an anonymous forum. 🤣
You clearly know about us much as me as to nurses reasoning for strikes, so we can leave it there. No need to derail the thread with argy bargy amongst us ☺

I wouldnt be against nurses having their degrees paid for but where do you draw the line. Surely social workers should too... And teachers. And I'm sure many more.

It used to be that all healthcare degrees were paid for, due to the higher number of nurses needed though I think only they had the diploma route (but might be mistaken) as well as the degree routes. In Wales you can still get your fees paid for, you just have to pay them back if you don't work in Wales for the NHS for 2 years when qualifying.

Well, according to the London School of Economics, abolishing non Dom status tax breaks would raise more than £3.2 billion per year. More than enough to fund public sector pay rises for nurses and paramedics etc.

Christ almighty what a depressing thread packed full of ignorant takes.

You are all missing the point entirely.

Nursing is an international profession. You can work wherever. Once the UK was a destination where nurses came to work and live. Now they don’t, leave and many British Nurses looking to leave.

If Nurses pay does not increase to compensate what has essentially been a pay cut since 2010 they will continue to leave in droves.

The NHS generally has been deliberately run into the ground to pave the way for privatisation which is already happening. Where I work, parts of the NHS can’t provide the services needed so private provision is being contracted.

You simply do not have a health service if you don’t have registered nursing staff.

I have been a nurse for 25yrs and was never in a union but joined in 2018 after Jeremy Hunt lied to NHS staff about pay.

I appreciate you are all just chatting your opinions here but trust me when I say Nurses are so done with NHS conditions and pay we will 100% withdraw labour even if the public turn against us.

I don't agree with the strikes though as I believe it is a co-ordinated attempt by socialist union bosses to disrupt and breakdown traditional society (and simultaneously keep themselves relevant 🤑)
This is utterly ridiculous. Unions consist of members who expect them to represent them.

Most of us are angry at “union bosses” for not taking action sooner, especially the RCN.

A Tory govt will never do that, while I do agree with it. So many things could release funds but they just won’t.

you are quite right, but when people state the money isn't there, I just wanted to say that it is, but it’s in the hands of tax avoiders.

The thing is that money will never be had. If the UK makes it more difficult for the world's elite to live here they'll just up sticks and move elsewhere.

Also with the multinationals like Facebook and apple it seems to be difficult with their global operations to actually tax them at a fair rate.

The whole problem is a lot bigger than taxing wealthy individuals and corporations.

Exactly, these people don't understand economics. When the economy is shrinking and we are sliding into a recession they all want unrealistic pay rises. Say hello to lay offs

The only place a Tory government will claw back their 19% pay rise is raising tax on the public. That includes supermarket staff and other people like myself in retail and other lower paid roles, then it’ll be a case of us vs them for some

When people on lower salaries get paid more they spend it in local shops and services. The people employed there then pay more in taxes. Large corporations and multi millionaire on with huge tax breaks simply hoard it in off shore banks or spend it in Gucci.

The recession and the current financial crisis are primarily as a result of years of fiscal mismanagement by the government. The difference in pay between the highest and lowest paid has massively grown over the last twenty years.

This isn’t a cost of living crisis it is a cost of greed crisis.

Some of what you say is true but a lot of it is also balls.
I 100% agree the Google’s and Amazon’s should pay their fair share of taxes. That alone would make our national services great again (sorry Trump).
But on the other scale is if you push then to do that they will move their businesses to other countries.
Dyson has already done this when they were asked to pay more tax.
So you are between a rock and hard place. At least they employ people

Before you quote me, if you look at the earlier post I referred to non Dom status tax. This applies to ultra wealthy individuals, not businesses.

Well I quoted correctly as you mentioned large business but the same goes for the wealthy, Lewis Hamilton is a prime example of somebody who left the UK because he doesn't want to pay tax. Although he is a hypocrite too as he always complain about the state of the country as long as he doesn't have to pay for it

When I was in my teens at college factory work was so well paid, now it’s minimum wage. You only have to look at industrial towns now to see how dilapidated they are because work has been shipped overseas.
Actually this is not a 100% true. I can tell you exactly when it happened. I moved to the UK in 2004 and as you said jobs were very well paid. That May of 04 they opened the borders to Poland etc and I saw our wages drop dramatically.
I work in manufacturing and you will now see higher paid jobs as it's going against the grain and growing rapidly at the moment. We are getting more work from abroad because we are cheaper than Europe, incl eastern eu and most Asian countries now. I'm shocked but there it is

Sorry I just thought about it and think I must seem very ANTI nurses etc. Actually I wish you could all receive massive amounts of money. In fact I think NHS staff should be better paid than footballers. Actually most people should. The NHS is amazing and 99.9% of countries around the world could only wish for it

I'm just not supportive of the strikes at the moment. If this was a few years into the future when the economy is doing better then I would 100% be supportive.

I'd rather people protest the stupid money MP's etc are paid to work for us

I agree with you in the changes that need to happen but unfortunately nurses have been asking for these things for years and are not being listened to. Same as doctors. Whereas getting an objective pay rise is much easier to achieve.
The Scottish offer was an average rise of 7.5% , with it being 11% for the lowest paid depending on uplifts for different bands. Ultimately all NHS workers have experienced real terms pay cuts for the last 10 years and 7.5% average is sub inflation and another effective pay cut. They need to link public sector pay to RPI.

Nurse interviewed on the radio this morning was saying her rent was £1600 and she took home £2200.

Where governments have really failed over the last few decades is to stop house prices and rents from going out of control. They're now at criminal levels. And there's no reason for them to be this high! Speculation and greed is causing untold missery.

So many problems trace back to housing.
